    BACKGROUND: Equity and efficiency are two fundamental principles for the sound development of health systems, as advocated by the World Health Organization (WHO). Despite the notable progress made by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in advancing their health systems, gaps persist in achieving global health goals. This paper examines the efficiency of health system stages and the fairness of health resource distribution in ASEAN countries, analyzes the underlying causes of the existing gaps, and suggests potential solutions to bridge them.

    METHODS: Data spanning 2011 to 2019, sourced from the WHO Global Health Observatory and the World Bank Database, form the foundation of this study. This study employs an enhanced two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) to assess the efficiency of health system stages in ASEAN countries. Equity in health resource distribution is evaluated using health resource agglomeration degree and concentration curves across demographic, geographic, and economic aspects. Furthermore, the Entropy-Weighted TOPSIS method is utilized to integrate equity across these dimensions, measuring the overall fairness in health resource allocation across different countries. Finally, rankings of health system fairness and efficiency are compared to assess the overall development level of health systems.

    RESULTS: The overall efficiency of the ASEAN health systems from 2011 to 2019 averaged 0.231, with an upward trend in the first stage efficiency at 0.559 and a downward trend in the second stage at 0.502. The health resource agglomeration degree indicated that Singapore, Brunei, and Malaysia had HRAD and HRPD values significantly greater than 1, and Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos predominantly had indices significantly less than 1. The concentration curve for hospital beds was the closest to the line of absolute equity. During the study period, the health resource concentration curve increasingly approached absolute equity, shifting from above to below the concentration curve. Singapore, Brunei, and Malaysia consistently remained in the first quadrant of the quadrant plot, and Myanmar and Cambodia were consistently in the third quadrant.

    CONCLUSION: ASEAN countries face two key challenges in their healthcare systems: first, while many nations such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam have improved resource allocation efficiency, this hasn't yet translated into better health services. To address this, establishing national health sector steering committees, focusing on workforce training and retention, and implementing centralized monitoring systems are crucial. Second, there is a growing disparity in healthcare development across ASEAN. Promoting balanced resource distribution and leveraging ASEAN's economic integration for regional collaboration will help bridge these gaps and foster more equitable healthcare systems.

    OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on HTAsiaLink members at the organizational level and provides recommendations for mitigating similar challenges in the future.

    METHODS: A survey was disseminated among HTAsiaLink members to assess the COVID-19 impact in three areas: (i) inputs, (ii) process, and (iii) outputs of the Health Technology Assessment organizations' (HTAOs) research operations and HTA process in general.

    RESULTS: Survey results showed that most HTAOs hired more staff and secured similar or higher funding levels during COVID-19. Nevertheless, some organizations reported high staff turnover. COVID-19-relevant research was prioritized, and most of the organizations had to adapt their research design to meet the needs of policymakers. Time constraints in conducting research and inability to collect primary data were reported as impacts on the research process. Overall, the number of research projects and accessibility of respondents' publications increased during COVID-19.

    CONCLUSIONS: Research demand for HTAOs increased during COVID-19 and impacted their research process; however, they demonstrated resilience and adaptability to provide timely evidence for policymakers. With the growing reliance on HTA, HTAOs require adequate financial support, continuous capacity building, collaboration, and partnership, innovative HTA methods, and a pragmatic yet robust, evidence-to-policy process in preparation for future pandemics.

    Alzheimer's Dementia (AD) is a progressive neurological disorder that affects memory and cognitive function, necessitating early detection for its effective management. This poses a significant challenge to global public health. The early and accurate detection of dementia is crucial for several reasons. First, timely detection facilitates early intervention and planning of treatment. Second, precise diagnostic methods are essential for distinguishing dementia from other cognitive disorders and medical conditions that may present with similar symptoms. Continuous analysis and improvements in detection methods have contributed to advancements in medical research. It helps to identify new biomarkers, refine existing diagnostic tools, and foster the development of innovative technologies, ultimately leading to more accurate and efficient diagnostic approaches for dementia. This paper presents a critical analysis of multimodal imaging datasets, learning algorithms, and optimisation techniques utilised in the context of Alzheimer's dementia detection. The focus is on understanding the advancements and challenges in employing diverse imaging modalities, such as MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), PET (Positron Emission Tomography), and EEG (ElectroEncephaloGram). This study evaluated various machine learning algorithms, deep learning models, transfer learning techniques, and generative adversarial networks for the effective analysis of multi-modality imaging data for dementia detection. In addition, a critical examination of optimisation techniques encompassing optimisation algorithms and hyperparameter tuning strategies for processing and analysing images is presented in this study to discern their influence on model performance and generalisation. Thorough examination and enhancement of methods for dementia detection are fundamental for addressing the healthcare challenges posed by dementia, facilitating timely interventions, improving diagnostic accuracy, and advancing research in neurodegenerative diseases.

    PURPOSE: To explore the prevalence of anhedonia (ANH) in major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment expectation and satisfaction among patients with MDD and physicians in the Asia-Pacific region.

    METHODS: This cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted in April-May 2023 among physicians and individuals aged ≥18 years with self-reported physician diagnosis of MDD (9-item Patient Health Questionnaire [PHQ-9] score ≥ 10) further stratified by anhedonia as measured by the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS): MDD-ANH (SHAPS score > 2) and MDD non-ANH (SHAPS score ≤ 2). The study assessed the prevalence of anhedonia in MDD as well as the perspectives on the treatment of anhedonia in MDD in terms of expectations and satisfaction among patients and physicians.

    RESULTS: The regional estimated prevalence of MDD was 16.1% where 52.5% of MDD respondents had ANH (SHAPS score ≥2). Depressed mood, mental changes, and changes in sleeping patterns prompted MDD-ANH (n = 1448) or MDD non-ANH (n = 836) respondents to seek medical consultation. Respondents with MDD-ANH (vs MDD non-ANH) reported significantly higher levels of depression and anhedonia, longer treatment duration, and preferred switching their existing medications over adding additional medications (all, p < 0.001). Over half of physicians (55.0%) were not treating anhedonia separately. Anhedonia-specific treatment goals seemed important to all respondents, while avoiding suicidal ideation was significantly important to physicians. MDD-ANH respondents reported in general the lowest level of satisfaction with treatment goals than MDD non-ANH and physician, with "improvements in sexual satisfaction" being the treatment goal with the lowest level of satisfaction.

    CONCLUSION: This first large-scale study conducted across the Asia-Pacific region provides a recent update on the prevalence of MDD and anhedonia in MDD and highlights unmet needs in the current therapeutic landscape for anhedonia in MDD, emphasizing the need for novel treatment.

    Primary pleural angiosarcoma (PPA) is a rare and challenging tumour to diagnose, often mistaken for other malignancies such as mesothelioma and lung cancer due to overlapping clinical and imaging features. We report a 52-year-old woman who presented with progressive shortness of breath and pleuritic chest pain. Imaging studies and thoracentesis revealed a large haemorrhagic left pleural effusion. Medical thoracoscopy (MT) showed a thickened and lobulated parietal pleura with multiple nodular lesions. Histopathological examination confirmed a diagnosis of angiosarcoma, characterized by pleomorphic tumour cells, a high Ki67 proliferation index and positive immunohistochemical markers, including CD31, D2-40, Vimentin, and Factor VIII. Tragically, the patient developed a hospital-acquired infection and passed away before any definitive treatment for the angiosarcoma could be initiated. This case underscores the diagnostic complexities of PPA and highlights the utility of MT in identifying this rare malignancy.

    Anwar Fazal has been a driving force in the founding of several civil society organizations in the areas of health, human rights, environment, and peace, that have been at the forefront of activism locally, nationally, and globally. In this interview, he shares his journey of 6 decades, involving a multiverse of public interest issues, which led him into the breastfeeding movement. It began with the setting up of the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), a pioneering action that triggered the formation of Health Action International (HAI), Pesticide Action Network (PAN), and the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA). Each of these resulted in several unique frameworks and codes relating to the marketing of infant foods, pharmaceuticals, and pesticides. They also led to the formation of World Breastfeeding Week, now being celebrated globally. Anwar studied Economics at the University of Malaya and did his postgraduate studies in Education. Anwar has served as a visiting professor at the University of Science Malaysia and the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He is the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award, popularly known as the "Alternative Nobel Prize," for his work on breastfeeding and infant nutrition and other health, environmental, and consumer issues. La Leche League International (LLLI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have honored him with the International Health Award and the Millennium Development Goals Award. He has written extensively on breastfeeding. He is currently Chairperson Emeritus of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and continues to speak out actively on protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding.

    BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis frequently poses diagnostic challenge when it presents as a peripheral pulmonary lesion (TB-PPL). The growing use of radial endobronchial ultrasound (rEBUS) for PPL biopsy highlights the need to identify predictive factors for TB-PPL, which is crucial for procedure safety.

    METHODS: A six-year retrospective review at our institution on adult patients with TB and malignant-PPL diagnosed from rEBUS procedure from October 1, 2016, to December 31, 2022. Clinical, radiological, procedural, histological and microbiological data were extracted and analysed.

    RESULTS: 387 PPLs were included in our cohort, 32 % were TB-PPL and 68 % were malignant-PPL. The median age was 63 (IQR 55-70) years, with the TB-PPL group significantly younger. The median size of the target lesion was 2.90 (IQR 2.26-4.00) cm. The overall rEBUS diagnostic yield was 85.3 %, with a 1.3 % pneumothorax risk. Multivariate analysis identified independent predictors for TB-PPL, including age <60 years (adj OR 2.635), target lesion size <2 cm (adj OR 2.385), upper lobe location (adj OR 2.020), presence of a cavity on pre-procedural CT (adj OR 4.186), and presence of rEBUS bronchogram (adj OR 2.722). These variables achieved an area under the curve of 0.729 (95 % CI 0.673-0.795) with a diagnostic accuracy of 75.49 % (95 % CI 70.68-79.88).

    CONCLUSIONS: Despite non-specific radiological findings in TB-PPL, our study identifies younger age, target lesion size less than 2 cm, upper lobe location, the presence of cavitation, and rEBUS bronchogram were independent clinical predictors for TB-PPL. This prediction model potentially helps mitigate the risk of accidental TB exposure during bronchoscopic procedures. A future prospective cohort study to validate these findings is essential to allow proper triaging of patient planning for rEBUS procedure.

    BACKGROUND & PURPOSE: Local treatment of oligometastases has been found to improve survival and prognosis. Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) has emerged as a treatment option for oligometastases but its use in ultra-central (UC) areas can cause significant toxicity and mortality. Fiducial markers (FM) can be used to improve SBRT accuracy, and can be inserted in the central thorax using linear endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) bronchoscopy. Outcomes of FM-guided SBRT for UC thoracic oligometastases is unknown.

    METHODS: A single-centre retrospective study investigating the feasibility, safety and outcomes of both linear EBUS-inserted FMs and subsequent FM-guided SBRT for UC-oligometastatic disease. Motion analyses of FMs were also performed.

    RESULTS: Thirty outpatients underwent 32 EBUS-FM insertion procedures with 100 % success, and no major procedural mortality or morbidity. Minor complications were 4.8 % incidence of delayed FM-displacement. UC FM-guided SBRT was completed in 20 patients with 99.9 % fractions delivered. Median SBRT dose delivered was 40 Gy over a median of 8 fractions. Majority of adverse events were Grade 1 and there was no SBRT-related mortality. Local control with SBRT was 95 %, with overall survival at 1-year and 3-years of 90 % and 56.3 % respectively. Median overall survival after SBRT was 43.6 months. FM movements in UC areas were recorded being greatest in the superior-inferior axis.

    CONCLUSION: Combined linear EBUS sampling and FM-insertion in UC thoracic oligometastatic disease is feasible and safe. UC-SBRT to oligometastases using FM guidance was found to have minimal complications and associated with moderate survival up to 3 years post-treatment.

    BACKGROUND: Melioidosis is a potentially fatal tropical infection. Little is known about mediastinal involvement in melioidosis. This study aimed to (a) describe the prevalence and demographics of various morphologies of mediastinal melioidosis, (b) propose a classification for radiological morphologies of mediastinal melioidosis.

    METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed. Case records of consecutive patients with culture-positive melioidosis who underwent computed tomography (CT) thorax from January 1, 2018-February 28, 2022, were reviewed.

    RESULTS: 486 culture-positive melioidosis patients were identified, of which 70 underwent CT thorax. 41 patients demonstrating mediastinal involvement were included in the final analysis, of which four were mediastinal collections, while the rest were classified into those with necrotic or matted appearances, and subcentimeter and larger than 1 cm. Culture-positivity was proven from blood in 83 % of patients (n = 34), with the remaining from chest wall pus, neck abscess pus, sputum, liver abscess, seminal vesicle, pleural, pericardial and peritoneal fluid. The most commonly associated pulmonary manifestations were consolidation and pleural effusion. Half had diabetes; a quarter had chronic kidney disease, while one had syphilis. Exposure to soil was present in six patients: quarry (n = 1), construction (n = 2), farmer (n = 1), living environment (n = 2). Seven patients succumbed before the end of 6-week intensive phase antibiotic treatment.

    CONCLUSION: Mediastinal melioidosis is a spectrum with multiple overlapping features consisting of necrosis, matted lymph nodes, multiseptated and non-septated collections. Further studies will elucidate the prognostic implications of mediastinal melioidosis.

    BACKGROUND: Different iterations of catheter and energy delivery system configurations are evolving for pulsed field ablation (PFA); however, some have used large and complex catheters, required large sheaths, and had a recognized risk of hemolysis.

    OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acute safety and efficacy of a custom designed 8F variable loop multielectrode mapping and PFA catheter with contact sensing.

    METHODS: This acute feasibility study recruited 30 patients undergoing de novo ablation of paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). The ElectroPulse Study is a first-in-human, nonrandomized, prospective study of a novel PFA system that utilizes an 8F, 10-electrode variable loop steerable mapping and ablation catheter with 2800-V biphasic bipolar waveform. All patients had pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) and posterior wall isolation (PWI) using the PFA system. The main outcomes were the acute success of PV/PWI and periprocedural serious adverse events.

    RESULTS: Complete PVI/PWI was successfully achieved in all 30 patients using 59.7 ± 7.2 applications. Total procedural time was 113.6 ± 26.3 minutes, fluoroscopy time 8.0 ± 5.5 minutes, and left atrial dwell time 78.7 ± 18.6 minutes. There was no esophageal injury, phrenic nerve palsy, clinical stroke, or death. Brain magnetic resonance imaging detected 2 new but transient silent cerebral lesions. Two patients (6.7%) had vascular access complications. Although there were changes in the biomarkers for hemolysis, none of the patients experienced clinical hemolysis or related acute kidney injury.

    CONCLUSION: This first-in-human study demonstrated that PFA using a novel variable loop catheter with a contact sensing system safely achieved 100% acute PVI/PWI with safety profile comparable to existing PFA systems.

    BACKGROUND: Intranasal corticosteroid (INCS) remains the primary treatment for allergic rhinitis (AR). Understanding adherence, safety concerns and sensory preferences is crucial for optimal care.

    OBJECTIVE: This review aims to determine medication adherence, sensory attributes and adverse effects of INCS in AR patients.

    METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane database was conducted for English articles published from 2004 to 2023. Eligibility includes clinical trials and observational studies with adult patients (18 years old or older) receiving INCS for AR (both intermittent and persistent).

    RESULTS: Thirty-one studies with 10,582 patients, comprising 10 cross-sectional studies and 21 randomized controlled trials (RCT) were included. Adherence rates ranged from 28% to 87%, with an average of 55.8%. Forgetfulness was the primary reason for non-adherence (63.1-77.8%), followed by adverse events (26.4-61.5%) and fear of adverse events (3.8-31.5%). Scent (38%), taste (28.5%), or aftertaste (24.3%) were the main differentiators for sensory attribute, with varying levels of intensity and preferences for each INCS. Common adverse events encompass epistaxis, nasal dryness/irritation, headache and nasopharyngitis. A meta-analysis of eight RCT detected no significant difference in adverse events between the INCS and control groups (risk ratio 1.05; 95% confidence interval, 0.88-1.24; p = 0.61).

    CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this review indicate that medication adherence to INCS is not optimal, with non-adherence mostly attributed to forgetfulness, preferences for sensory attributes, and unpleasant effects associated with INCS. The underlying factors should be addressed as part of a multimodal strategy to improve adherence.

    OBJECTIVES: This study quantified the health and economic benefits of improving low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) control in Malaysian patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). It aimed to inform policy discussions and healthcare planning for effective ASCVD management.

    METHODS: A deterministic, prevalence-based model was used to project the annual health burden and direct medical costs associated with recurrent ASCVD events over a 10-year horizon. The target population included adults (≥30 years) with established ASCVD and uncontrolled LDL-C levels (>1.8 mmol/L). The model comprised 3 modules: population size projection, recurrent ASCVD risk calculation (by means of the Secondary Manifestations of ARTerial disease [SMART] risk model), and direct medical and productivity cost estimation. The current status quo and a scenario with a 50% improvement in mean LDL-C were compared.

    RESULTS: We projected over 800 000 adults with established ASCVD in 2023, increasing to approximately 1.4 million by 2032. Under the status quo, about 55 000 recurrent ASCVD events were expected within 10 years, with significant direct medical costs and productivity losses. Improved LDL-C control could potentially reduce recurrent events by 7000 cases (13% reduction), prevent 2100 premature deaths, and save approximately 32 400 years of life. Economically, this could lead to a reduction of approximately 72 million MYR in direct medical costs and a gain of approximately 132.4 million MYR in productivity over a decade.

    CONCLUSIONS: Optimizing LDL-C control in high-risk patients with ASCVD presents a critical opportunity to reduce health and economic burdens in Malaysia.

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) are progressive neurological disorders that significantly impair the cognitive functions, memory, and daily activities. They affect millions of individuals worldwide, posing a significant challenge for its diagnosis and management, leading to detrimental impacts on patients' quality of lives and increased burden on caregivers. Hence, early detection of MCI and AD is crucial for timely intervention and effective disease management.

    METHODS: This study presents a comprehensive systematic review focusing on the applications of deep learning in detecting MCI and AD using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Through a rigorous literature screening process based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, the research has investigated 74 different papers in detail to analyze the different approaches used to detect MCI and AD neurological disorders.

    RESULTS: The findings of this study stand out as the first to deal with the classification of dual MCI and AD (MCI+AD) using EEG signals. This unique approach has enabled us to highlight the state-of-the-art high-performing models, specifically focusing on deep learning while examining their strengths and limitations in detecting the MCI, AD, and the MCI+AD comorbidity situations.

    CONCLUSION: The present study has not only identified the current limitations in deep learning area for MCI and AD detection but also proposes specific future directions to address these neurological disorders by implement best practice deep learning approaches. Our main goal is to offer insights as references for future research encouraging the development of deep learning techniques in early detection and diagnosis of MCI and AD neurological disorders. By recommending the most effective deep learning tools, we have also provided a benchmark for future research, with clear implications for the practical use of these techniques in healthcare.

    In this pioneering study, electrostatic spraying (ES) technology with high voltages is proposed to reduce the size of hydrogel microbeads further, aiming to enhance the adsorption rate of cationic methylene blue (MB) dye. The increased voltages, ranging from 0.0 to 13.0 kV, further decreased the size of electrostatically sprayed hydrogel microbeads crosslinked by hydrogen bonds between sodium alginate (SA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) in hydrochloric acid. The size of SA/CMCS hydrogel microbeads was successfully reduced from 2000 ± 121 μm (SC-2000) to 400 ± 15 μm (SC-400). Notably, SC-400 exhibits the highest maximum adsorption capacity (qm) and rate constant (k2) at 840.3 mg/g and 0.0598 g/mg/min, respectively, at pH 9.0 and a temperature of 25 °C in the absence of ionic compounds, which is three times higher than that of SC-2000, due to their high specific surface area and pore volume. Through a series of adsorption studies and characterization analyses, SA/CMCS hydrogel microbeads displayed heterogeneous adsorption behaviors towards MB dye through electrostatic interactions between the deprotonated carboxylic groups and cationic MB molecules, where MB adsorption efficiency could be significantly influenced by pH and ionic strength. These findings suggest that ES technology is effective in synthesizing smaller SA/CMCS hydrogel microbeads with enhanced MB removal rates and stable adsorption capacities and their applications could be further explored for removing other organic dyes and toxic metals in subsequent research studies.

    Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) is a well-known environmental contaminant that poses significant risks due to its carcinogenic nature and it is crucial to remove it from the environment, especially in wastewater. Thus, this study aims to enhance the degradation of BaP in wastewater through the optimised interaction of the fungus Aspergillus brasiliensis and the bacterium Sphingomonas spiritovorum. The ideal initial pH and temperature ranges for optimising BaP breakdown were determined using response surface methodology (RSM). For that, the range of initial pH chosen was pH 4-9 and the temperature was between 25℃ - 40℃. The first-order kinetic was used to determine the kinetic response for monoculture and co-culture. The co-culture of A. brasiliensis and S. spiritovorum successfully produced a BaP removal rate of over 50%, which was much higher than the removal rates observed in monoculture treatments under optimisation conditions. The kinetic response was obtained with 0.067 d-1 (A. brasiliensis), 0.127 d-1 (S.spriritovorum) and 0.144 d-1 (co-culture) for the degradation rate constant, K. The degradation half-life time, t1/2 shows the decrement for the co-culture (4.83 days) compared to monoculture. The increased degradation has been attributed to the synergistic biochemical pathways, in which fungal ligninolytic enzymes initiate the breakdown of BaP, followed by bacterial degradation of the resulting compounds. The study's results, which have been validated by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), offer insightful information for the enhancement of bioremediation strategies. This information is practicable for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers in the context of addressing carcinogenic pollutants in wastewater.

    The power generation sector consumes significant amounts of water. A comprehensive water footprint (WF) assessment helps identify and monitor the processes consuming high amounts of water. This research evaluates the water footprint (WF) of electricity generation at a USC coal power plant, integrating on-site data for enhanced reliability. Based on the Water Footprint Assessment Manual, the electricity WF includes supply chain and operational WF. This study exhibits that the average electricity WF is 2.96 m3/MWh. The supply chain WF accounts for 95% of the total electricity WF, while operational WF contributes 5%. The blue WF accounts for 9.9% of the total electricity WF, while the grey water footprint accounts for 90.1%. The results of this research show a significant difference in the distribution of blue and grey WF in electricity WF. Factors contributing to the differences include the amount of coal consumption, power generation technology and power plant cooling technology. Furthermore, this study shows that grey WF depends on the concentration of pollutants considered. This research also conducted a WF impact assessment on local water resources and found that the blue and grey operational WF contributes to low impact. Monitoring the water footprint associated with electricity generation at a coal power plant would provide a more enhanced understanding of water consumption patterns, which could help influence water resources management.

    Primates, the most colorful mammalian radiation, have previously served as an interesting model to test the functions and evolutionary drivers of variation in eye color. We assess the contribution of photo-regulatory and communicative functions to the external eye appearance of nine macaque species representing all the branches of their radiation. Macaques' well described social structure and wide geographical distribution make them interesting to explore. We find that (1) the posterior option of the anterior eyeball is more pigmented closer to the equator, suggesting photoprotective functions. We also find that (2) the temporal side of the eyeball is more heavily pigmented than the nasal side. This suggests that eyeball pigmentation in macaques is distributed to reduce damage to the corneal limbus. The inclusion of a translocated population of M. fuscata in our analyses also suggests that external eye appearance may change quickly, perhaps owing to phenotypic plasticity. We find no evidence that communicative functions drive variation in external eye appearance in macaques. These results suggest that the amount of light in a species' environment drives variation in eye coloration across macaque species. Furthermore, the geographical distribution of macaques hints at important factors that have yet to be accounted for, such as the reflectivity of the terrain a given species inhabits.

    Novel, innovative approaches like edible gels (hydrogels and oleogels) are important food materials with great scientific interest due to their positive impacts on structural and functional foods and other unique properties. Biopolymers (protein, starch and other polysaccharides) can be excellent and cost-effective materials for the formed edible gels. Recently, natural gums, although also as biopolymers, are preferred as additives to further improve the textural and functional properties of edible gels, which have received extensive attention. However, these studies have not been outlined in previous reviews. In this review, we highlighted the advantages of gums as additives to construct edible gels. Moreover, the various roles (including electrostatic or covalent interactions) for natural gums in regulation of food gel properties (solvent-holding and rheological properties) are highlighted. Finally, the use of natural gums as additives to improve the stability and targeted delivery of phytochemicals in food gels and their application in food systems are summarized. The information covered in this article may be useful for the design of functional foods that can better meet personalized needs of people.
