    Complicated crown-root fracture is a severe dental injury that affects the enamel, dentine, cementum, and pulp, representing a small percentage of dental trauma cases in permanent teeth. This case report discusses the management of a complicated crown-root fracture to the maxillary left central incisor in a 14-year-old male patient following a motor vehicle accident. The fracture extended subgingivally, complicating access and restoration. Initial treatment attempts by a general dentist were unsuccessful due to the repeated dislodgement of restorations. A multidisciplinary approach was taken and options such as orthodontic extrusion, gingivectomy, and surgical extrusion were considered. Root canal treatment followed by gingivectomy was performed to expose the fracture line for restoration. While the fracture line for restoration was successfully exposed, the intrinsic discoloration was overlooked. The key to treatment success was the consideration of supracrestal tissue attachment, a crucial factor in maintaining periodontal health. Regular follow-up is essential to monitor the tooth's endodontic-periodontic status and ensure lasting success.

    Studies on Odonata have gained attention worldwide as well as locally in Malaysia. Although there is a wealth of data available to be utilized for solving taxonomic problems, ecological and behavioural research areas are more favoured than taxonomy and systematics. Thus, there are confusions over how to correctly identify closely related and sympatric species, especially in female odonates. One such example is in the genus Rhinocypha. Consequently, the present study focuses on taxonomic work, employing multi-approaches in the form of morphological (morphological diagnostics, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and geometric morphometric analysis), applying the molecular technique. Seventeen morphological characteristics were created to differentiate between the females of Rhinocypha spp. A FESEM was used on the female's ovipositor to focus on the anal appendages and sheathing valve (V3). Also, the phylogenetic patterns expressed by COI and 16S rRNA genes, and canonical variate analysis for the wing geometric morphometric revealed three clusters that supported the distinction of the Rhinocypha group. In summary, this study effectively developed an integrated approach of classic morphological and trendy molecular, combined with FESEM microscopy techniques, which provided corroborative evidence and resolved taxonomic uncertainties.

    The present study examines the use of collars and geobags for reducing local scour around bridge piles. The efficiency of collars and geobags was studied experimentally. The data from the experiments were compared with data from earlier studies on the use of single piles with a collar and with a geobag. The results showed that using a combination of a steel collar and a geobag yields the most significant scour reduction for the front and rear piles, respectively. Moreover, the independent steel collar showed better efficiency than the independent geobag below the sediment level around the bridge piles.

    To compare the dislodgement resistance and the adhesive pattern of four different endodontic sealers to root dentine walls. Ninety lower premolars were assigned to five groups (n = 18), Group 1: no sealer (control); Group 2: EndoRez (ERZ); Group 3: Sealapex (SPX); Group 4: EndoSeal MTA (ESA) and Group 5: BioRoot RCS (BRS). They were instrumented up to size 30 taper 0.06 and obturated using single cone technique with matched-taper gutta-percha cones and one of the mentioned sealers. Six teeth from each group were then randomly subjected to 100, 1000 and 10,000 thermocycles, respectively. 1 mm slice of mid root region, measuring 6 mm from the apical foramen was prepared and subjected to push-out test under a Universal Testing Machine. Adhesive patterns of sealers were assessed using a stereomicroscope at 20 × magnification and classified using a new system. Statistical analyses were performed using two-way ANOVA, complemented by Tukey HSD and Chi-square tests.     Background: An ideal composite resin should demonstrate smooth surface after polishing and high hardness value to provide long-term success. Thus, this study aimed to compare the surface roughness and microhardness of new experimental zirconia-reinforced rice husk nanohybrid composite (Zr-Hybrid) with commercialized nanofilled (Filtek-Z350-XT) and microhybrid composite (Zmack-Comp) resins before and after artificial ageing.

    Methods: One hundred and eighty standardized disc samples were prepared, of which ninety samples each were used for surface roughness and microhardness test, respectively. They were divided equally into: Group 1 (Filtek-Z350-XT), Group 2 (Zmack-Comp), and Group 3 (Zr-Hybrid). For surface roughness test, all samples were polished with aluminium oxide discs and further subdivided into aged and unaged subgroups, in which composite samples in aged subgroups were subjected to 2500 thermal cycles. Next, all the samples were subjected to surface roughness test using a contact stylus profilometer. As for microhardness test, all the aged and unaged samples were tested using a Vickers hardness machine with a load of 300 kgf for 10 s and viewed under a digital microscope to obtain microhardness value. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA followed by post hoc Tukey's honestly significant difference and paired sample t-test with significance level set at P = 0.05.

    Results: In both the aged and unaged groups, Zr-Hybrid showed statistically significantly lower surface roughness (P < 0.05) than Filtek-Z350-XT and Zmack-Comp, but no statistically significant difference was noted between Filtek-Z350-XT and Zmack-Comp (P > 0.05). A similar pattern was noted in microhardness test, whereby Zr-Hybrid showed the highest value (P < 0.05) followed by Filtek-Z350-XT and lastly Zmack-Comp. Besides, significant differences in surface roughness and microhardness were noted between the aged and unaged groups.

    Conclusion: Zr-Hybrid seems to demonstrate better surface roughness and microhardness value before and after artificial ageing.

    A packaging material that is environment-friendly with excellent mechanical and physicochemical properties, biodegradable and ultraviolet (UV) protection and thermal stability was prepared to reduce plastic waste. Six different concentrations of Pennisetum purpureum/Napier cellulose nanowhiskers (NWCs) (i.e. 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 wt%) were used to reinforce polylactic acid (PLA) by a solvent casting method. The resulting bionanocomposite film samples were characterised in terms of their morphology, chemical structure, crystallinity, thermal degradation and stability, light transmittance, water absorption, biodegradability, and physical and mechanical properties. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy showed the excellent dispersion of NWC in the PLA matrix occurred with NWC concentrations of 0.5-1.5 wt%. All the bionanocomposite film samples exhibited good thermal stability at approximately 343-359 °C. The highest water absorption was 1.94%. The lowest transparency at λ800 was 16.16% for the PLA/3.0% NWC bionanocomposite film, which also has the lowest UVA and UVB transmittance of 7.49% and 4.02%, respectively, making it suitable for packaging materials. The PLA/1.0% NWC film exhibited the highest crystallinity of 50.09% and high tensile strength and tensile modulus of 21.22 MPa and 11.35 MPa, respectively.

    This study aimed to evaluate the bioactivities and biocompatibilities of porous polylactic acid (PLA) reinforced with cellulose nanofiber (CNF) scaffolds. The in vitro degradation behaviors of the porous PLA/CNF scaffolds were systematically measured for up to 8 weeks in a phosphate-buffered saline medium at 37 °C. The reinforcement of CNF resisted the biodegradation of the scaffolds. The in vitro cytotoxicity and biocompatibility of the scaffolds were determined using the Beas2B American Type Culture Collection cells. The 3-(4,5-cimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide cytotoxicity and proliferation tests showed that the scaffolds were non-toxic, and epithelial cells grew well on the scaffold after 7 days of culture, whereas the percentage of cell proliferation on the PLA/CNF15 scaffold was the largest, 130 %. A scratch wound-healing assay was performed to evaluate the suitability of the scaffolds for cell migration. The results demonstrated that the scaffolds exhibited good cell migration towards nearly complete wound closure.

    Background: This study aimed to compare the fracture strength, fracture pattern and type of fracture of endodontically treated maxillary lateral incisors restored with new zirconia reinforced rice husk nanohybrid composite.

    Material and Methods: Eighty mature permanent maxillary lateral incisors from patients age range of 30-60 years with single canal were selected and randomly divided into: Group 1 - RCT + nanofilled composite (Filtek), Group 2 - RCT + microhybrid composite (Zmack), Group 3 - RCT + new nanohybrid composite (Zr-Hybrid) and Group 4 - Intact teeth (control). Standardized mesio-palatal-distal cavity was prepared, and endodontic treatment was carried out using crown-down technique until size 30, tapered 0.04. Obturation was completed using single cone technique with gutta-percha and AH plus sealer. Cavity access was restored with respective composite resins. Next, teeth were stored in incubator for 24 hours and subdivided into aged and unaged subgroups. Teeth in aged subgroups were subjected to 2500 thermal cycles for 5ºC, 37ºC and 55ºC with 30 seconds dwell time and 5 seconds transfer time. After that, root surfaces of teeth were covered with silicone-based material and placed in boxes filled with acrylic until the cemento-enamel-junction (CEJ) level. They were then tested under Universal Testing Machine until fracture occurred. Samples were then viewed under Leica microscope to determine the fracture pattern and type of fracture. Data analyzed using One-way ANOVA complimented by post hoc Tukey HSD and paired sample T test for fracture strength. Fracture pattern and type of fracture were analyzed using Chi-square test. Level of significance was set at p<0.05.

    Results: Significant differences were observed (p<0.05) with Group 3 demonstrating the highest fracture strength followed by Group 4, Group 1 and lastly Group 2 in both aged and unaged subgroups respectively. A significant decreased in fracture strength was noted in Group 1 and Group 2 (p<0.05) as number of thermocycle increased but no significant differences were noted in Group 3 and Group 4 (p>0.05). Besides, Group 3 and Group 4 showed higher rate of favorable fracture pattern, followed by Group 1 and lastly Group 2. Most favorable fracture pattern was noted to exhibit horizontal fracture type (86.36%), whereas most unfavorable fracture pattern exhibited vertical fracture type (77.78%).

    Conclusions: Endodontically treated teeth restored with new zirconia reinforced rice husk nanohybrid composite (Zr-Hybrid) demonstrated higher fracture strength than commercialized composite resins especially after artificial ageing. Zr-Hybrid showed similar fracture pattern to those of intact teeth with higher rate of horizontal fracture type. Key words:Fracture strength, fracture pattern, composite resin, rice husk, Zirconia.

    OBJECTIVE:  A systematic search was performed for the identification and analysis of the 100 most often cited articles on dental caries and to highlight the changing trends in the field of dentistry over time.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS:  The search was performed without any restriction on the study design, publication year, or language using the Web of Science (WoS) group of Clarivate Analytics enabling the search through "All Databases." Based on the citation count as available in WoS, the articles were sorted in a descending manner. Information regarding each article was then extracted, which included its authorship, counts of citation (in other databases), citation density, current citation index (2019), publication year, country of publication, journal of article, evidence level based on study design, and keywords description.

    RESULTS:  The count of citation for each article varied in each database, that is, 175 to 2,003 in WoS, 89 to 1,981 in Scopus, and 126 to 3,492 when searched in Google Scholar. The highest number of articles (n = 10) related to dental caries were published in 2004. A total of 301 authors made valuable contributions to this field, out of which J.D. Featherstone had coauthored 6 articles. A significant negative correlation (p < 0.01) was found between the age of the article and the citation density (r =-0.545). However, a nonsignificant correlation (p = 0.952) occurred between the age of publication and the citation count (r = 0.006).

    CONCLUSION:  The results of this systematic review provide a critical appraisal of the context underpinning scientific developments in the field of dental caries and also highlighted trends in clinical management and research.

    INTRODUCTION: Anaemia is common during pregnancy and can lead to miscarriage, intrauterine growth retardation, premature labour and antepartum haemorrhage. Anaemia in pregnancy is defined as a haemoglobin (Hb) level of <11 g/dL.

    METHOD: This retrospective review included 407 antenatal mothers diagnosed with anaemia at 36±1 weeks of gestation at all 10 health clinics in Alor Gajah between January and December 2018.

    RESULTS: According to the district annual returns, 2,407 antenatal mothers (36 weeks of gestation) were registered in the health clinics in Alor Gajah in 2018. Among them, the prevalence of anaemia was 18.6% (n=448). However, there were only 407 cards found. Most participants were Malays (89.4%), aged 20-40 years (93.6%) and married (96.3%). Almost all anaemia cases (96.5%) were mild (Hb level of 9-10.9 g/dL). Approximately 34.4% of the mothers were already anaemic at booking; 77.6% belonged to the B40 income group; and 31.6% had poor pregnancy spacing of <2 years. Iron deficiency anaemia was the most common type of anaemia (51.0%), followed by dilutional anaemia (34.0%), which did not normalise at 36 weeks of gestation. Anaemia was associated with lower educational (p<0.05) and Hb levels at booking (p<0.001).

    CONCLUSION: Having normal maternal Hb levels in early pregnancy especially at booking is crucial, as it may reduce the possibility of anaemia during pregnancy. Early screening and supplementation of at-risk pregnancies may be applied as a preventive strategy. Suitable methods of iron treatment and investigation need further exploration.
