    Talon cusps were observed in a 10-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister. Although the sister's affected tooth was asymptomatic and free of any occlusal interference, the boy's tooth presented some problems. The affected tooth had displaced the occluding mandibular tooth lingually, and this had resulted in a mid-line shift. To overcome the problem, the talon cusp was ground off and a prophylactic odontotomy performed. Orthodontic treatment was later carried out.

    Evidence of traumatized permanent incisors was recorded as part of a national oral health survey of schoolchildren in Malaysia. A total of 4,085 schoolchildren aged 16 years were examined. The prevalence of injury was 4.1% and it was significantly higher in males than females, with a ratio of 2:1. Almost 75% of the subjects had one tooth affected. Out of a total of 200 fractured teeth, 78.0% involved the maxillary central incisors. A high level of untreated traumatized teeth (89%) was noted. However, of the untreated traumatized teeth, only 9% presented with problems such as discoloration of tooth, sinus or abscess formation.

    Double teeth or joined teeth have been described under several different terms and the terminology is often confusing. There are several ways in which union of teeth can occur and the terms that are commonly used to describe the condition are fusion and gemination. Although primary double teeth themselves may be regarded as harmless anomalies, its presence can cause some abnormalities to occur in the permanent dentition. Therefore, early diagnosis of the anomaly is of considerable importance.

    A case of talon cusp in the primary maxillary left central incisor is reported. This dental anomaly was not associated with any other somatic or dental abnormality. Though pulpal extension into the cusp was detected radiographically, clinical examination after the cusp was ground failed to reveal any pulpal extension. The tooth was badly carious and was restored with a polycarbonate crown.

    Background: Fixed orthodontic retainers must be well retained on the tooth surfaces, allow physiologic movement of teeth and exert minimal forces on the teeth to be retained. Previous studies analyzed the bond strength and amount of deflection caused due to the debonding force but not the magnitude of force needed for unit deformation.

    Aims: This study aims to evaluate and compare the bond strength and load deflection rate (LDR) of three different fixed retainer wires.

    Materials and Methods: The wires were divided into three Groups: A - three-stranded twisted ligature wire, B - Bond-A-Braid (Reliance Orthodontics), and C - three-stranded twisted lingual retainer wire (3M Unitek). Twenty models were prepared for each group with a passive 15 mm long lingual retainer wire bonded to two lower incisors. An occlusogingival force was applied to the wire until it debonded. For LDR, three-point bending test was done at 0.5 mm deflection. These forces were measured using a Universal Instron Testing Machine.

    Statistical Analysis: Mean bond strength/LDR and pairwise comparisons were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's honest significant differencepost hoctest, respectively.

    Results: Group C exhibited the highest mean bond strength and LDR of 101.17N and 1.84N, respectively. The intergroup comparisons were all statistically significant.

    Conclusion: Compared to the other two wire types, Group C might be better retained on the teeth due to its higher bond strength. With its relatively higher LDR value, it may resist deformation from occlusal forces, thereby reducing inadvertent tooth movement and yet remain flexible enough to allow physiologic tooth movements.

    AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess subject wise and tooth wise distribution and prevalence of traumatic injuries to the anterior teeth of 2- to 6-year-old children.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed. Primary maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth of 1,800 children aged between 2 years and 6 years, who attended 20 pre-schools in National Capital Region Delhi, India, were examined by a single examiner, and a questionnaire was filled in person by the parent/guardian. Andreasen's classification was used to classify the traumatic injuries. The Chi-square test was used to statistically analyze the variation in traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) with age and gender. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine the influence of independent variables on the occurrence of TDIs.

    RESULTS: The prevalence of TDIs was 17%. Significant and highly significant differences were found between boys and girls for cause and location of trauma (p < 0.05) and tooth type involved (p < 0.001) with boys being more prone to such injuries. The commonest cause of injury was due to falls and the location was playground. The teeth most commonly affected were the maxillary central incisors (36.9%) followed by maxillary lateral incisors (3.3%), and the least affected were the maxillary and mandibular canines (0.3%).

    CONCLUSION: The prevalence of traumatic injuries to the anterior teeth in 2- to 6-year-old children in National Capital Region of Delhi, India, was 17%. There is a need to run educational programs to increase parents' awareness of the risks of dental trauma and emphasize preventive measures.

    CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Parents should be made aware of the widespread prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of trauma to primary dentition, so that they can seek appropriate care timely. The time elapsed between injury and dental care is of utmost importance.

    INTRODUCTION: The orientation of the occlusal plane forms the basis for the arrangement of teeth conducive to satisfactory esthetics and function, making it one of the most important clinical procedures in prosthodontic rehabilitation. This study aimed to analyze and compare the vertical distance between the anterior attachment of lingual frenum (AALF) and the incisal edge of mandibular central incisors among three races in Malaysia.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample consisted of 63 dentate subjects (21 Malays, 21 Chinese, and 21 Indians) who were chosen based on the inclusion criteria. Two models were made using irreversible hydrocolloid impressions, and an average of the value was obtained. Lingual frenum was recorded in function. Casts were fabricated with dental stone. AALF was marked and the vertical distance was measured using a caliper.

    RESULTS: In Malays, the mean and standard deviation of the vertical distance were 14.2 ± 0.9 mm, with a range of 12.3-16.0 mm; in Chinese were 14.4 ± 0.9 mm, with a range of 12.0-16.9 mm; and in Indians were 15.1 ± 1.0 mm, with a range of 13.0-17.2 mm. The difference among the three races regarding the distance between AALF and the incisal edge of mandibular central incisors was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Among the three races, Malays and Indians have the greatest mean difference.

    CONCLUSION: According to the results of the current study, the distance between AALF and the incisal edge of mandibular central incisors might be a proper criterion for the initial adjustment of occlusal rims. The values obtained from three different races were significantly different from one another, hence a different range of values was used to establish occlusal height for different races.

    Dens invaginatus (DI) and gemination are two developmental abnormalities that are well reported in the dental literature, but their coexistence in a single tooth is rare. Such situations worsen the risk factors associated with these anomalies, and the treatment plan should be customised as they possess altered morphology and anatomy. A 19-year-old girl came for evaluation of a cracked tooth in the front region of the upper jaw. The tooth showed clinical features of gemination and radiographic features of DI, and was diagnosed as DI in geminated maxillary lateral incisor. The differential diagnoses based on clinical appearance without radiographic investigation may warrant the treatment approach if these two abnormalities coexist in a single tooth. The report also highlights the importance of three-dimensional imaging in diagnosis and treatment planning of teeth with altered pulp canal anatomy. There are few reported cases in the literature detailing the treatment options for these two anomalies occurring in the same tooth.

    Anterior teeth may have aberrant anatomical variations in the number of roots and root canals. A review of the literature was conducted using appropriate key words in major endodontic journals to identify the available reported cases as well as experimental and clinical investigations on accessory roots and root canals in anterior teeth. After retrieving the full text of related articles, cross-citations were identified, and the pooled data were then discussed. Results revealed a higher prevalence in accessory root/root canal variations in mandibular anterior teeth than in maxillary counterparts. However, maxillary incisor teeth revealed the highest tendency for accessory root/root canal aberrations caused by anomalies such as dens invaginatus and palato-gingival groove. Primary anterior teeth may also exhibit external and internal anatomical variations in the root, especially maxillary canines. Therefore, dental practitioners should thoroughly assess all teeth scheduled for root canal treatment to prevent the undesirable consequences caused by inadequate debridement of accessory configurations of the root canal system.

    An investigation of the prevalence and distribution of hypodontia was carried out in Malaysian children between the ages of five to fifteen years. Hypodontia occurred in 2.8 per cent of these children. A greater number of females were found to have hypodontia, the ratio of affected females to males is 1.6:1. The teeth most frequently missing were the maxillary lateral incisors followed by the mandibular lateral incisors, then the mandibular second premolars. The aetiology of the condition is discussed. It is noteworthy that studies showing the lower second premolars to be most commonly missing have younger subjects. This suggests delayed development of these teeth in some individuals.

    Five hundred and thirty-six patients were examined for the presence of talon cusps. The anomaly was observed in 28 patients (5.2 per cent). There was no sex predilection in the occurrence. Only two patients had a bilateral occurrence, with the maxillary lateral incisors being the most commonly affected. Radiographic evidence of pulpal extension into the cusp was observed in five patients. Many of the affected teeth presented with deep developmental grooves some of which were carious and/or occlusal interference leading to malocclusion.

    AIM: This study aims to find the prevalence of MIH in children in the city of Fujairah, United Arab Emirates, utilising the current standardised guidelines for diagnosis and calibration.

    BACKGROUND: Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) prevalence in paediatric patients has been widely studied. However, most of the available studies have utilised criteria that did not offer consistent diagnostic and calibration tools, which resulted in incomparable results.

    METHODS: Cross-sectional study. One hundred sixty-two school children aged 7-9 years in the city of Fujairah, UAE have been randomly selected and orally examined for the presence of MIH lesions. This was conducted following Ghanim et al. [2015] guidelines and after calibrating examiners following Ghanim et al. [2017] training manual.

    CONCLUSION: MIH prevalence was high in the city of Fujairah, UAE. More studies utilising the standardised criteria are required for valid comparisons. Further research on the aetiology of MIH is also needed.

    This report aimed to describe an effective biomechanics to control the upper incisors inclination during the
    correction of gummy smile with bimaxillary proclinations. A 14-year-old female presented with a Class II
    division I incisor relationship complicated with bimaxillary proclination on a Class 2 skeletal base. The lips
    were incompetent, showing 7 mm of upper incisors at rest and 5mm maxillary gingival display on smiling
    with normal upper lip length. Treatment involved extraction of all first permanent premolars followed by
    upper and lower fixed appliances. Intrusion of the upper incisors with controlled labial crown torque was
    accomplished with mini-implant anchorage placed bilaterally on the infrazygomatic crests with the retraction
    forces above the centre of resistance using 0.019x0.025-in stainless steel archwire in 0.022-in slot. The
    0.019x0.025-in stainless steel archwire in 0.022-in slot provided the vertical play to favour lingual crown
    tipping despite having forces above the centre of resistance for concurrent anterior segment intrusion.
