    This study was conducted to describe corneal endothelial cell density and morphology in Malay eyes. Non-contact specular microscopy was performed in 125 eyes of 125 Malay volunteers, aged 20-87 years. Studied parameters included endothelial cell density (CD), mean cell area (MCA), coefficient of variation (CV) in cell area, as well as hexagonal appearance of the cells. Mean endothelial cell density in the study population was 2648 +/- 310 cell/mm(2). Mean CA, CV and percentage of hexagonal cells were 382.8 +/- 47.7microm(2), 58.1 +/- 22.6, 44.3% +/- 11.5% respectively. There was a statistically significant decrease in endothelial cell density (correlation - 0.300, P = 0.001) and CV in cell size (correlation - 0.208, P = 0.02) with age. There was a statistically significant increase in mean cell area (correlation 0.300, P = 0.001) with increasing age. The correlation between age and percentage of hexagonal cells was insignificant (correlation 0.074, P = 0.41). In conclusion, a consistent decrease was noted in the endothelial cell density with increasing age. The differences in endothelial cell density between genders were statistically insignificant.

    We studied by scanning electron microscopy the effects of the repeated use of a newly-designed, disposable, suction trephine (Microsurgical, Ltd, Bedfordshire, England) on the nature of the cut of successive corneal buttons from sheep eyes. After the trephine was used more than nine times, the cut edge became more irregular as successive buttons were produced. Also, progressively greater degrees of endothelial cells adjacent to the cut edge were lost. Although the corneal buttons initially were circular, those produced after the 20th cut became more oval. These results suggest that a disposable corneal trephine should be reused no more than nine times.

    Introduction: The corneal endothelium is made up of an extremely thin layer of non -regenerating cells essential in keeping the cornea clear. The purpose of this study was to quantify the corneal endothelial cells morphology, visual acuity (VA) and refractive error in patients having femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) and conventional phacoemulsification surgery (CPS). Methods: Clinical data from 56 eyes were included in this study. 28 eyes had FLACS surgery and another 28 eyes had CPS. Distance VA, refractive error, corneal thickness and endothelial cells morphology were evaluated pre-operatively and at 1 month follow up. Refractive error was determined subjectively and VA was taken using Snellen chart. Specular microscope was used to measure endothelial cells morphology and central corneal thickness. Mann Whitney test and Spearman correlation analysis were used to analyse the results. Results: There were no statistically significant difference in the mean endothelial cell density (p=0.24), mean central corneal thickness (p=0.68), mean coefficient of variance (p=0.19), mean hexagonality (p=0.44), VA (p=0.72) and postoperative refractive outcome (p=0.66) between both groups.     The present work was to determine the development and re-epithelization of bilayered corneal construct (BCC) in vitro and in vivo using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The in vitro BCC was transplanted to the rabbit's eye and after 90 days the BCC was harvested and analyzed. The corneas were processed for morphology studies. The result indicates that the BICC that was transplanted for 90 days showed good development and re-epithelization of epithelial layer similar to the normal cornea.

    PURPOSE: The aim was to assess the morphology of the Asian corneal endothelium, particularly the index of polymegethism and its relationship to endothelial cell density assessments.
    METHODS: The central regions of the corneal endothelium of 72 healthy, normal weight, non-contact lens wearers were assessed by non-contact specular microscopy. There were six groups of persons, aged between 18 and 27 years, whose ethnic origins were self-reported as Asian (Mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Pakistan or other Asian groups). Single images including at least 100 contiguous cells were obtained from each subject and were processed by planimetry after manual border marking to minimise errors. Calculations were made of the coefficient of variation of cell area (COV; polymegethism) as well as the endothelial cell density and percentage of six-sided cells.
    RESULTS: The COV values ranged from 18 to 30.4 per cent (group mean 24.5 ± 2.8 per cent). The corneas had essentially normal thickness (0.530 ± 0.026 mm), with the endothelia showing a high percentage of six-sided cells (66.3 ± 7.1 per cent) and none showing even mild signs of polymegethism. Endothelial cell density estimates based on average cell areas ranged from 2,020 to 3,623 cells per mm(2) and from 2,157 to 3,835 with calculations based on individual cell areas. The difference between the two estimates of endothelial cell density was strongly related to the coefficient of variation (r = 0.765).
    CONCLUSIONS: This result is consistent with several older reports indicating that it is uncommon to find polymegethism in healthy young adult Asian individuals. Nonetheless, even low coefficient of variation values can substantially affect the estimations of the cell density.

    PURPOSE: To analyse and compare the alterations in corneal endothelium morphology induced by different materials and durations of wearing soft contact lenses (CL) among young adults living in Kuala Lumpur.

    METHODS: Healthy soft CL wearers were invited to participate in this study. Visual acuity (VA) was measured using the Snellen chart, and subjective refraction was performed using cross-cylinder technique. Standard ocular assessments were conducted using a slit lamp biomicroscope and morphology of corneal endothelial cells (endothelial cell density, ECD, coefficient variation, COV, hexagonality, HEX and central corneal thickness, CCT) were evaluated using a non-contact specular microscope. Statistical analysis was conducted using ANOVA and data from the right eye only is included.

    RESULTS: A total of 72 subjects (32 SiHy and 40 HCL wearers) and 24 non-CL wearers (control) participated in this study. The gender distribution for study subjects was 13 males and 59 females, with a mean age 22.15 ± 1.84 years old. The mean refraction was -1.86 ± 1.25DS. The duration of wearing CL ranged from 1 to 9 years. Subjects were later divided into 2 groups following duration of CL wear: Group 1 (<5 years) and Group 2 (≥5 years) for analysis purposes. Statistical analysis showed significant alterations in ECD, COV and HEX of CL wearers (p corneal endothelial cells. Contact lens material and duration of CL wear (in years) are factors that affect the alterations. Optometrists are recommended to regularly evaluate the morphology of corneal endothelial cells in CL wearers and provide necessary intervention when required.

    PURPOSE: To study the effects of intracameral phenylephrine 1.5% on corneal endothelial cell loss and morphological changes in patients who had uneventful phacoemulsification surgery.

    DESIGN: A double-blind randomized controlled trial.

    METHODS: This study comprised 295 patients who were randomized into the intracameral (ICM) mydriatic group or topical mydriatic group. Central corneal endothelial cell density (ECD), coefficient of variation (CV), and percentage of hexagonal cells were measured preoperatively and postoperatively at 1 week, 6 weeks, and 3 months with specular microscope.

    RESULTS: There was no significant difference in endothelial cell density and endothelial cell loss between the topical and ICM mydriatic groups. At 3 months, the mean endothelial cell density in the ICM group was 2129.76 ± 423.53 cells/mm2 and 2100.54 ± 393.00 cells/mm2 in the topical group (P = 0.539). The endothelial cell loss was 18.60 ± 12.79% in the IC M group and 19.44 ± 11.24% in the topical group (P = 0.550). No significant difference was seen in the percentage of hexagonal cells and coefficient of variation of patients between the 2 groups.

    CONCLUSIONS: Intracameral phenylephrine was not associated with increased risk of postoperative endothelial cell loss or morphological changes. It can be safely injected into the anterior chamber for pupil dilatation before phacoemulsification cataract surgery.
