    This study investigated the effects of 6 weeks combined circuit training programme and honey
    supplementation on bone metabolism markers in young males. Forty male participants were divided into four
    groups (n=10 per group): sedentary without honey supplementation control (C), sedentary with honey
    supplementation (H), circuit training without honey supplementation (Ex), circuit training with honey
    supplementation (HEx) groups. Circuit training was carried out one hour/session, 3 times/week. Participants in
    H and HEx consumed 300 mLof honey drink containing 20g of Tualang honey for 7 days/week. Immediately

    Background & Study Aim: The purpose of the current case study was to
    describe the activity pattern of individual exponents during competitive fights
    completed before and after six weeks circuit training programme. Material
    & Methods: Thirteen and 16-year-old experimental (E13 and E16) and
    control (C13 and C16) participants were paired and videoed with fighting
    before and after 6-week training. Exponents were chosen based on their age,
    maturation, weight, competitive standard (none had participated in an official
    silat match), and initial fitness performance. All matches were converted into
    .mpg files and analysed using the same procedure. The distribution of
    outcomes was analysed and used as an index of performance for more
    detailed analysis. Results: The E13 increased the frequency of kicking during
    competition post-training, which is suggested to reflect transference of
    improved fitness to competition. Both E13 and C13 improved the ability to
    dodge their opponent attacks, likely reflecting a response to technical
    coaching. The frequency of actions during competition generally decreased
    for both older participants, suggesting limited fitness transference to
    competition. All individuals demonstrated some meaningful improvements
    in fitness following the intervention period. However, these responses did not
    necessarily reflect the group finding. Conclusions: This was the first case
    study to examine the changes in competitive fighting performance of four
    young performers from experimental and control groups following a silatspecific
    circuit training programme. Therefore, fitness gains together with
    technical coaching may transfer to competition in younger exponents, while
    alterations in strategy may have been more decisive in the older group. The
    research has provided further insight of fitness development and trainability,
    and also transference fitness into competitive performance in youth silat which may help to facilitate coaches of the demands and requirements of the
    combat sport.

    To our knowledge, the efficacy of combined probiotic supplementation with circuit training has not been evaluated. Thus, we investigated the effects of probiotic supplementation combined with circuit training on isokinetic muscular strength and power and cytokine responses in young males. Forty-eight healthy sedentary young males were recruited and randomised into 4 separate groups: sedentary placebo control, probiotics (P), circuit training with placebo (CT), and circuit training with probiotics (CTP). Participants in the CT and CTP groups performed circuit training 3 times/week with 2 circuits of exercises from weeks 1-8 followed by 3 circuits of exercises from weeks 9-12. Participants in the P and CTP groups consumed multi-strain probiotics containing 3 × 1010 colony-forming units of Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. lactis, L. casei, Bifidobacterium longum, B. bifidum and B. infantis twice daily for 12 weeks. Measurements of body height and weight, blood pressure, resting heart rate, blood samples, and isokinetic muscular strength and power were carried out at pre- and post-tests. Isokinetic knee strength and power in CT and CTP groups were significantly higher (P < 0.05) at post-test. In addition, interleukin (IL)-10 concentration was significantly increased (P < 0.0001) at post-test in P and CT but a trend toward significant increase in CTP (P = 0.09). Nevertheless, there was no significant difference in IL-6. This study suggests that 12 weeks of circuit training alone and the combination of circuit training and probiotic consumption improved muscular performance while circuit training alone and probiotics alone increased IL-10 concentration.

    BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests that probiotics may have positive benefits on immune responses following endurance exercise. However, little attention has been given to its possible beneficial effects on immune responses following resistance exercise.

    METHODS: Forty-one healthy sedentary males were recruited and randomised into four groups: sedentary control with placebo (C), probiotics (P), circuit training with placebo (Ex), and circuit training with probiotics (PEx) groups. Participants in the Ex and PEx groups performed a progressive load of circuit training at 3 times/week for 12 weeks. Each circuit comprised 10 exercises with work to rest ratio of 1:2. Participants consumed either multi-strain probiotics or placebo twice daily for 12 weeks. Body height and weight, blood pressure, resting heart rate, saliva and blood samples were collected at pre- and post-tests.

    RESULTS: Saliva flow rate and salivary IgA, α-amylase, lactoferrin and lysozyme responses were not significantly different (P>0.05) between groups and also between pre- and post-test within each group. Similarly, total leukocytes, total lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, T-helper, T-cytotoxic, B lymphocytes, and natural killer cells counts were not significantly affected (P>0.05) by the probiotics and/or circuit training. However, circuit training significantly increased (P<0.05) immune cells count at post-test as compared to pre-test. Yet, a combination of circuit training and probiotics showed no significant (P>0.05) effects on immune cells count.

    CONCLUSIONS: This study did not provide enough support for the positive effects of probiotics on immune responses among sedentary young males following resistance exercise. However, 12 weeks of circuit training enhanced immune cells count.

    This paper aims to determine acute responses of standardized resistance training load on cardio-respiratory variables in recreationally active participants. The methodology involved twelve recreationally active males with an age of 23.5 (± 4.07) years, a mass of 70.5 (± 7.84 kg), a height of 1.69 (± 0.06 m), and a body mass index of 24.8 (± 2.14) kg/m2). The participants performed an exercise protocol that comprises five exercises on a standardized load. Each exercise was performed in a duration of 60 seconds with uncontrolled lifting velocity. Cardio-respiratory responses were measured using a portable metabolic system analyzer during the exercises. A wrist digital blood pressure monitor was used to determine pre- and postprotocol blood pressure responses. Based on the results, pre- and postprotocol systolic (p=0.744) and diastolic (p=0.758) blood pressure indicated no significant responses. However, significant differences were observed in pre- and post-heart rate responses (p=0.000). Peak cardio-respiratory responses recorded during the protocol were 30.2 (± 4.02) ml/Kg/min for oxygen consumption, 138 (± 61.9) bpm for heart rate, and 633 (± 71.2) kcal for energy expenditure (estimated per hour). On average, the Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) was recorded at a value of 8.62 (± 1.19). For a short duration standardized load circuit training exercise protocol, cardio respiratory responses were similar to other protocols. The metabolic cost of the predefined exercises was nearly half of the recommended energy expenditure through exercise per week. The prescribed protocol was comparable with other exercise protocols for cardiorespiratory variables. The single set protocol used was efficient in terms of caloric expenditure, and was less strenuous over similar exercise duration. Furthermore, the prescribed protocol is applicable and beneficial for active and healthy individuals.
