    The teaching and research tool called 'DietPLUS', developed by the present author at an institution of higher learning in 2007, contains nutrient information of 840 food items in Excel format. DietPLUS functions as a '2-in-1' food composition database plus a rapid calculator of nutrient intakes, with the option of 'collapsing' the food composition face leaving only the nutrient calculator face. The macronutrients featured in the programme are energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates, dietary fibre, sugars (intrinsic + added), polyunsatuared omega-6 fatty acids (mainly linoleic acid, LA) and polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids [alphalinolenic acid (ALA) or eicosapentaenic acid (EPA) + docosahexaenolic acid (DHA)]. The micronutrients in the programme are vitamin A (as retinol equivalents, RE), vitamin C, thiamin (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), and niacin. Cholesterol content was included to complete the list of food components tabled. Food items consumed are converted into gram quantities (edible portion) and are entered in one column in the Excel programme which emphasises the simplicity and user-friendliness of the present nutrient calculator. DietPLUS instantaneously sums up the macronutrients and micronutrients consumed with each subsequent entry. Macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrate, sugars and dietary fibre) consumed are presented as gram quantities and a percentage of the Recommended Nutrient Intakes for Malaysia 2005. An approximate number of servings are also provided for vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish and meat, which may be useful in meal planning and nutrition/dietetic counselling.

    In recent years, Recommender System (RS) research work has covered a wide variety of Artificial Intelligence techniques, ranging from traditional Matrix Factorization (MF) to complex Deep Neural Networks (DNN). Traditional Collaborative Filtering (CF) recommendation methods such as MF, have limited learning capabilities as it only considers the linear combination between user and item vectors. For learning non-linear relationships, methods like Neural Collaborative Filtering (NCF) incorporate DNN into CF methods. Though, CF methods still suffer from cold start and data sparsity. This paper proposes an improved hybrid-based RS, namely Neural Matrix Factorization++ (NeuMF++), for effectively learning user and item features to improve recommendation accuracy and alleviate cold start and data sparsity. NeuMF++ is proposed by incorporating effective latent representation into NeuMF via Stacked Denoising Autoencoders (SDAE). NeuMF++ can also be seen as the fusion of GMF++ and MLP++. NeuMF is an NCF framework which associates with GMF (Generalized Matrix Factorization) and MLP (Multilayer Perceptrons). NeuMF achieves state-of-the-art results due to the integration of GMF linearity and MLP non-linearity. Concurrently, incorporating latent representations has shown tremendous improvement in GMF and MLP, which result in GMF++ and MLP++. Latent representation obtained through the SDAEs' latent space allows NeuMF++ to effectively learn user and item features, significantly enhancing its learning capability. However, sharing feature extractions among GMF++ and MLP++ in NeuMF++ might hinder its performance. Hence, allowing GMF++ and MLP++ to learn separate features provides more flexibility and greatly improves its performance. Experiments performed on a real-world dataset have demonstrated that NeuMF++ achieves an outstanding result of a test root-mean-square error of 0.8681. In future work, we can extend NeuMF++ by introducing other auxiliary information like text or images. Different neural network building blocks can also be integrated into NeuMF++ to form a more robust recommendation model.

    Color-blind is a generic disability whereby the affected individuals are not given the opportunity to benefit from the various functions provided by color that would impact humans physically and psychologically. Although this disability is not fatal, it brought plenty of turbulence in the affected individuals' daily activities. This paper aims to develop a system for recognizing and detecting colors of clothes in images, improve accuracy by using advanced algorithms to handle lighting variations, and provide color matching recommendations to assist color-blind individuals in making informed choices when purchasing shirts. The proposed methodology for color recognition involves:•retrieving the RGB values of a given point from the input image and converting them into HSV values.•creating web application integrated with a machine learning model to classify and predict the corresponding color based on the HSV values.•predicting the color name with suggestions of matching colors will be displayed on the interface.

    Angiogenesis plays an important role in tumor formation and proliferation. The development of anti-angiogenic agents to block new blood vessel growth will inhibit metastasis and induce apoptosis of the cancer cells. Nine medicinal plants, Strobilanthes crispus, Phyllanthus niruri, Phyllanthus pulcher, Phyllanthus urinaria, Ailanthus malabarica, Irvingia malayana, Smilax myosotiflora, Tinospora crispa and blumea balsamifera were screened for anti-angiogenic properties using the rat aortic ring assay. Of these, the methanol extracts of Phyllanthus species and Irvingia malayana exhibited the highest activity. At 100 microg/mL, P. pulcher, P. niruri, P. urinaria and I. malayana recorded an inhibition of 78.8 %, 59.5 %, 56.7 % and 46.4 %, respectively, against rat aortic vascular growth. Their activities were further investigated by the tube formation assay involving human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) on Matrigel. I. malayana, P. niruri and P. urinaria showed a significant decrease of 45.5, 37.9 and 35.6 %, respectively, whilst P. pulcher showed a much lower decrease of 15.5 % when compared with that of the rat aortic ring assay. All the plant extracts were evaluated for cytotoxicity on a panel of human cancer cell lines using the MTT assay. None of them displayed acute cytotoxicity. The HPLC of P. niruri, P. urinaria and P. pulcher indicated the extracts contained some identical chromatographic peaks of lignans. Further fractionation of I. malayana yielded betulinic acid reported in this plant for the first time and at 100 microg/mL it exhibited a 67.3 % inhibition of vessel outgrowth and 46.5 % inhibition of tube formation.

    kcnk10a has been predicted in zebrafish to be a member of the two-pore domain potassium ion (K+) channel-related K+ (TREK) channel family known as a thermoreceptor. Since reproduction is affected by temperature, Kcnk10a could be involved in the regulation of reproduction. However, expression of kcnk10a in the zebrafish brain and association with reproduction has not been identified. In this study, the full length sequence and localization of kcnk10a in the brain was investigated and gene expressions of the TREK channel family were examined to investigate association with reproduction. We initially identified the full length cDNA sequence of kcnk10a using Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends and localization in the zebrafish brain using in situ hybridization. Furthermore, we examined the gene expression differences of kcnk2b, kcnk10a and kcnk10b mRNA between genders as well as developmental stages by real-time PCR. The deduced amino acid sequence of the identified kcnk10a mRNA contains highly conserved two pore domains and four transmembrane regions and was higher similarity to zebrafish Kcnk10b than zebrafish Kcnk2a and 2b. kcnk10a mRNA was widely distributed in the brain such as the preoptic area, hypothalamus and the midbrain. kcnk10a mRNA expression exhibited significant difference between mature male and female, and increase during puberty. Kcnk10a could be involved in the regulation of reproductive function.

    The tachykinins are a family of neuropeptides, including substance P (SP), neurokinin A (NKA), and neurokinin B (NKB), that are encoded by the tac1 (SP and NKA) or tac2/3 (NKB) genes. Tachykinins are widely distributed in the central nervous system and have roles as neurotransmitters and/or neuromodulators. Recent studies in mammals have demonstrated the coexpression of NKB and kisspeptin and their comodulatory roles over the control of reproduction. We have recently identified two kisspeptin-encoding genes, kiss1 and kiss2, in teleosts. However, such relationship between tachykinins and kisspeptins has not been demonstrated in non-mammalian species. To determine the involvement of tachykinins in the reproduction in teleosts, we identified tac1 and two tac2 (tac2a and tac2b) sequences in the zebrafish genome using in silico data mining. Zebrafish tac1 encodes SP and NKA, whereas the tac2 sequences encode NKB and an additional peptide homologous to NKB (NKB-related peptide). Digoxigenin in situ hybridization in the brain of zebrafish showed tac1 mRNA-containing cells in the olfactory bulb, telencephalon, preoptic region, hypothalamus, mesencephalon, and rhombencephalon. The zebrafish tac2a mRNA-containing cells were observed in the preoptic region, habenula, and hypothalamus, whereas the tac2b mRNA-containing cells were predominantly observed in the dorsal telencephalic area. Furthermore, we examined the coexpression of tachykinins and two kisspeptin genes in the brain of zebrafish. Dual fluorescent in situ hybridization showed no coexpression of tachykinins mRNA with kisspeptins mRNA in hypothalamic nuclei or the habenula. These results suggest the presence of independent pathways for kisspeptins and NKB neurons in the brain of zebrafish.

    The Kiss1/KISS1 gene has recently been implicated as a potent hypothalamic regulator of reproductive functions, in particular, the onset of puberty in mammals. In zebrafish (Danio rerio), there are two kiss1 homologues (kiss1 and kiss2) expressed in the brain: Kiss2-expressing neurons in the hypothalamic nuclei are considered potent regulators of reproduction, whereas the role of Kiss1-expressing neurons in the habenula remains unknown. We first analyzed the expression of kiss1 mRNA in a transgenic zebrafish, in which the habenula-interpeduncular nucleus (IPN) pathway is labelled with green fluorescent protein, and our application of a biocytin neural tracer into the habenula showed the presence of neuronal projections of Kiss1 neurons to the ventral IPN. Therefore, we speculated that kiss1 neurons might regulate the serotonergic system in the raphe. However, laser microdissection followed by real-time PCR revealed the expression of Kiss1 receptor (kissr1) mRNA in the habenula and the ventral IPN but not in the dorsal IPN or the serotonergic neurons in the raphe nuclei. Dual-fluorescent in situ hybridization revealed the coexpression of kiss1 and kissr1 mRNA in the habenula. Administration of Kiss1 significantly decreased the level of kiss1 mRNA (0.3- to 0.5-fold, P < 0.001), but the level of c-fos mRNA was increased (≈ 3-fold, P < 0.05) in the ventral habenula, suggesting that there is autocrine regulation of the kiss1 gene. Kiss1 administration significantly increased the c-fos mRNA levels in the raphe nuclei (2.5-fold, P < 0.001) and genes involved in the regulation of serotonin levels (pet1 and slc6a4a; 3.3- and 2.2-fold, P < 0.01). These findings suggest that the autocrine-regulated habenular Kiss1 neurons indirectly regulate the serotonergic system in the raphe nuclei through the IPN in the zebrafish.

    Immediate early response (IER) 2 gene, a member of the IER family, is a gene of unknown function which is affected by external stimuli in the brain. In the present study, the full length sequence and localization of medaka (Oryzias latipes) ier2 was investigated in the brain to understand the functions of Ier2 in the future studies. The full length sequence of medaka ier2 was identified using a 3'-, 5'- rapid amplification of cDNA ends method, and distribution in the brain was identified using in situ hybridization. The identified full length ier2 mRNA consisted of 939 nucleotides spanning along 1 exon. The deduced amino acid sequence consisted of 171 amino acid residues which contains a highly conserved sequence, nuclear localization signal. ier2 mRNA was distributed in the telencephalon, midbrain and the hypothalamus. This highly conserved primary response gene Ier2 can be used to visualize and map functionally activated neuronal circuitry in the brain of medaka.

    GPCR crystal structures have become more readily accessible in recent years. However, homology models of GPCRs continue to play an important role as many GPCR structures remain unsolved. The new crystal structures now available provide not only additional templates for homology modelling but also the opportunity to assess the performance of homology models against their respective crystal structures and gain insight into the performance of such models. In this study we have constructed homology models from templates of various transmembrane sequence identities for eight GPCR targets to better understand the relationship between transmembrane sequence identity and model quality. Model quality was assessed relative to the crystal structure in terms of structural accuracy as well as performance in two typical structure-based drug design applications: ligand binding pose prediction and docking enrichment in virtual screening. Crystal structures significantly outperformed homology models in both assessments. Accurate ligand binding pose prediction was possible but difficult to achieve using homology models, even with the use of induced fit docking. In virtual screening using homology models still conferred significant enrichment compared to random selection, with a clear benefit also observed in using models optimized through induced fit docking. Our results indicate that while homology models that are reasonably accurate structurally can be constructed, without significant refinement homology models will be outperformed by crystal structures in ligand binding pose prediction and docking enrichment regardless of the template used, primarily due to the extremely high level of structural accuracy needed for such applications.

    BACKGROUND: Effective pain management involves a cycle of continual pain assessment, good pain control strategies, and assessment of a standard quality improvement measures. A validated questionnaire that focuses on the quality of postoperative pain management in pediatric surgical patients and parental satisfaction on pain treatment is lacking. We, therefore, modified the revised American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire to evaluate the quality of postoperative pain management in a pediatric surgical setting. The primary aim of this study was to validate the modified version of revised American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire.

    METHODS: Parents whose children aged below 12 years and were scheduled for elective surgery in a teaching hospital, were approached to participate in this survey. The reliability of the modified version of revised American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha test, while the construct validity was assessed with a principal component analysis using a varimax rotation. The parental satisfaction with pain treatment received was measured.

    RESULTS: A total of 108 parents completed the questionnaire. The internal consistency of the questionnaire shows a Cronbach's alpha of 0.798. Principal component analysis revealed a four-factor structure of the 12 items which explained 69.7% of the total variance. The factors are "Interference of sleep and activity," "Pain severity and drowsiness," "Perception of care," and "Adverse effects," respectively. Our study showed that this questionnaire is a valid and reliable measure for "Interference of sleep and activity" and "Pain severity and drowsiness" factors, but not for "Perception of care" and "Adverse effects." The results for "Perception of care" and "Adverse effects," therefore, should be reported as individual items instead of total score. The parental satisfaction with pain treatment given was good (median 8.0; IQR 3.0).

    CONCLUSION: The modified version of revised American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire is a feasible and easy instrument to administer. The questionnaire can be used to obtain feedback from parents about the outcomes and experiences of pain management and is helpful in continuous quality evaluation and improvement in the postoperative care in a pediatric setting.

    Chikungunya is a re-emerging mosquito-borne viral infection that has spread from East Africa to Indian Ocean islands and re-emerged in India since 2004. In Malaysia, chikungunya re-emerged after a hiatus of seven years, causing a localised outbreak in a north-western coastal town in 2006 and subsequently widespread outbreaks in 2008. Since the first local outbreak of chikungunya in Singapore in January 2008, chikungunya infections have been increasingly reported in Singapore. In this case series, five patients aged 37-62 years, with chikungunya infection confirmed in August 2008, were reported. Three of the five were male, and only one had medical comorbidities. Two had a travel history to Johor, Malaysia, where local outbreaks of chikungunya had been reported. Fever, arthralgia and rash were the most common symptoms. Fever lasted four to five days while viraemia lasted four to 11 days, persisting two to three days after defervescence in three patients. A biphasic pattern of fever was observed in two patients. Leucopenia was noted in all patients, while mild thrombocytopenia and transaminitis occurred in three of five patients. Two patients had persistent polyarthralgia at two to three weeks after the onset of symptoms. Fever, arthralgia and rash should prompt consideration of acute chikungunya in Singapore. While taking the travel history, doctors should be mindful that indigenous chikungunya cases can occur.

    INTRODUCTION: This study aims to assess the impacts of COVID-19 pandemics among university students in Malaysia, by identifying the prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress among them and their respective predictors.

    METHODOLOGY: An online cross-sectional study was conducted via non-probabilistic convenience sampling. Data were collected on sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, COVID-19 related influences. Mental health status was assessed with depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21).

    RESULTS: 388 students participated this study (72.4% female; 81.7% Bachelor's student). The prevalence of moderate to severe depression, anxiety and stress among university students are 53.9%, 66.2% and 44.6%, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analysis found that the odds of depression were lower among students who exercise at least 3 times per week (OR: 0.380, 95% CI: 0.203-0.711). The odd ratio of student who had no personal history of depression to had depression, anxiety and stress during this pandemic was also lower in comparison (OR: 0.489, 95% CI: 0.249-0.962; OR: 0.482, 95% CI: 0.241-0.963; OR: 0.252, 95% CI: 0.111-0.576). Surprisingly, students whose are currently pursuing Master study was associated with lower stress levels (OR: 0.188, 95% CI: 0.053-0.663). However, student who had poorer satisfaction of current learning experience were more likely to experience stress (OR: 1.644, 95% CI: 1.010-2.675).

    LIMITATIONS: It is impossible to establish causal relationships between variables on mental health outcomes, and there is a risk of information bias.

    CONCLUSION: The prevalence of mental health issues among university students is high. These findings present essential pieces of predictive information when promoting related awareness among them.

    INTRODUCTION: With the increasing prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, it is imperative to investigate its influence on education and the resulting impact on student learning outcomes. This includes exploring the potential application of AI in process-driven problem-based learning (PDPBL). This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of students towards the use of ChatGPT) build on GPT-3.5 in PDPBL in the Bachelor of Pharmacy program.

    METHODS: Eighteen students with prior experience in traditional PDPBL processes participated in the study, divided into three groups to perform PDPBL sessions with various triggers from pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutics, and clinical pharmacy fields, while utilizing chat AI provided by ChatGPT to assist with data searching and problem-solving. Questionnaires were used to collect data on the impact of ChatGPT on students' satisfaction, engagement, participation, and learning experience during the PBL sessions.

    RESULTS: The survey revealed that ChatGPT improved group collaboration and engagement during PDPBL, while increasing motivation and encouraging more questions. Nevertheless, some students encountered difficulties understanding ChatGPT's information and questioned its reliability and credibility. Despite these challenges, most students saw ChatGPT's potential to eventually replace traditional information-seeking methods.

    CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests that ChatGPT has the potential to enhance PDPBL in pharmacy education. However, further research is needed to examine the validity and reliability of the information provided by ChatGPT, and its impact on a larger sample size.

    The study unfolds with an acknowledgment of the extensive exploration of TRIZ components, spanning a solid philosophy, quantitative and inductive methods, and practical tools, over the years. While the adoption of Semantic TRIZ (S-TRIZ) in high-tech industries for system development, innovation, and production has increased, the application of AI technologies to specific TRIZ components remains unexplored. This systematic literature review is conducted to delve into the detailed integration of AI with TRIZ, particularly S-TRIZ. The results elucidate the current state of AI applications within TRIZ, identifying focal TRIZ components and areas requiring further study. Additionally, the study highlights the trending AI technologies in this context. This exploration serves as a foundational resource for researchers, developers, and inventors, providing valuable insights into the integration of AI technologies with TRIZ concepts. The study not only paves the way for the development and automation of S-TRIZ but also outlines limitations for future research, guiding the trajectory of advancements in this interdisciplinary field.

    Agriculture is a leading sector in international initiatives to mitigate climate change and promote sustainability. This article exhaustively examines the removals and emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the agriculture industry. It also investigates an extensive range of GHG sources, including rice cultivation, enteric fermentation in livestock, and synthetic fertilisers and manure management. This research reveals the complex array of obstacles that are faced in the pursuit of reducing emissions and also investigates novel approaches to tackling them. This encompasses the implementation of monitoring systems powered by artificial intelligence, which have the capacity to fundamentally transform initiatives aimed at reducing emissions. Carbon capture technologies, another area investigated in this study, exhibit potential in further reducing GHGs. Sophisticated technologies, such as precision agriculture and the integration of renewable energy sources, can concurrently mitigate emissions and augment agricultural output. Conservation agriculture and agroforestry, among other sustainable agricultural practices, have the potential to facilitate emission reduction and enhance environmental stewardship. The paper emphasises the significance of financial incentives and policy frameworks that are conducive to the adoption of sustainable technologies and practices. This exhaustive evaluation provides a strategic plan for the agriculture industry to become more environmentally conscious and sustainable. Agriculture can significantly contribute to climate change mitigation and the promotion of a sustainable future by adopting a comprehensive approach that incorporates policy changes, technological advancements, and technological innovations.

    Kisspeptin has recently been recognized as a critical regulator of reproductive function in vertebrates. During the sexual development, kisspeptin neurons receive sex steroids feedback to trigger gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons. In teleosts, a positive correlation has been found between the thyroid status and the reproductive status. However, the role of thyroid hormone in the regulation of kisspeptin system remains unknown. We cloned and characterized a gene encoding kisspeptin (kiss2) in a cichlid fish, the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Expression of kiss2 mRNA in the brain was analyzed by in situ hybridization. The effect of thyroid hormone (triiodothyronine, T3) and hypothyroidism with methimazole (MMI) on kiss2 and the three GnRH types (gnrh1, gnrh2, and gnrh3) mRNA expression was analyzed by real-time PCR. Expression of thyroid hormone receptor mRNAs were analyzed in laser-captured kisspeptin and GnRH neurons by RT-PCR. The kiss2 mRNA expressing cells were seen in the nucleus of the lateral recess in the hypothalamus. Intraperitoneal administration of T3 (5 μg/g body weight) to sexually mature male tilapia significantly increased kiss2 and gnrh1 mRNA levels at 24 h post injection (P

    PURPOSE: To validate the sensitivity and specificity of a 3-dimensional (3D) convolutional neural network (CNN) artificial intelligence (AI) software for lung lesion detection and to establish concordance between AI-generated needle paths and those used in actual biopsy procedures.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study using computed tomography (CT) scans from 3 hospitals. Inclusion criteria were scans with 1-5 nodules of diameter ≥5 mm; exclusion criteria were poor-quality scans or those with nodules measuring <5mm in diameter. In the lesion detection phase, 2,147 nodules from 219 scans were used to develop and train the deep learning 3D-CNN to detect lesions. The 3D-CNN was validated with 235 scans (354 lesions) for sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) analysis. In the path planning phase, Bayesian optimization was used to propose possible needle trajectories for lesion biopsy while avoiding vital structures. Software-proposed needle trajectories were compared with actual biopsy path trajectories from intraprocedural CT scans in 150 patients, with a match defined as an angular deviation of <5° between the 2 trajectories.

    RESULTS: The model achieved an overall AUC of 97.4% (95% CI, 96.3%-98.2%) for lesion detection, with mean sensitivity of 93.5% and mean specificity of 93.2%. Among the software-proposed needle trajectories, 85.3% were feasible, with 82% matching actual paths and similar performance between supine and prone/oblique patient orientations (P = .311). The mean angular deviation between matching trajectories was 2.30° (SD ± 1.22); the mean path deviation was 2.94 mm (SD ± 1.60).

    CONCLUSIONS: Segmentation, lesion detection, and path planning for CT-guided lung biopsy using an AI-guided software showed promising results. Future integration with automated robotic systems may pave the way toward fully automated biopsy procedures.

    Medication review is an intervention with the potential to reduce drug-related problems (DRPs) in the elderly. This study aimed to determine the effect of pharmacists' medication reviews on geriatric patients. This study accessed two online databases, MEDLINE Complete and Scopus, and examined all studies published in English between 2019 and 2023, except for reviews. The studies included (1) participants over 65 years of age and (2) medication reviews conducted by pharmacists. The titles, abstracts, and full texts were reviewed for data extraction to determine whether the studies satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Forty-four of the initial 709 articles were included in this study. The articles included discussions on the incidence rates of DRPs and potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) (n=21), hospitalization (n=14), medication adherence (n=9), quality of life (QoL) (n=8), and falls (n=7). Pharmacist medication reviews were associated with a reduced incidence of DRPs and PIMs, and improved adherence to medications. Patients' overall QoL is also increasing. However, pharmacist medication reviews were not strongly associated with decreased hospitalization or falls. A pharmacist's medication review may be a feasible intervention for reducing the incidence rates of DRPs and PIMs, regardless of whether it is performed as a sole intervention or supplemented with other interventions. The intervention was also effective in increasing medication adherence and QoL.
