    BACKGROUND: Although cultural factors play a crucial role in experience of stigma, there is scant review on the impact and importance of culture on stigma of mental illness across Pacific Rim Region. This study aims to investigate: 1) the cultural factors related to stigmatizing beliefs about mental illness in Pacific Rim region, and 2) culture-specific measures and interventions on stigma of mental illness.

    METHODS: A systematic search of papers was conducted in the MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Google scholar through January 2003 to April 2019.

    RESULTS: Forty-one studies in Pacific Rim region which met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The rate of stigma of mental illness (e.g., public stigma: from 25.4 to 85.2%) was relatively high in Pacific Rim region. Culture factors (e.g., Collectivism, Confucianism, face concern and familism, religion and supernatural beliefs) contributed to people's stigmatizing behaviors and attitudes toward persons with mental illness, their relatives and mental health professionals. Certain measurements were developed and employed to assess different type of cultural factors related to stigma of mental illness.

    CONCLUSIONS: Cultural factors play an important role in influencing the rate and performance of stigma of mental illness. Further research on stigma of mental illness and culture-specific interventions to reduce the stigma should be conducted in the Pacific Rim region.

    Objective: To diagnose and treat the first imported active case of Plasmodium knowlesi infection in China.

    Methods: The clinical information of the patient was collected. Microscopy of blood smear was conducted after Giemsa staining. Genomic DNA was extracted from blood, and PCR was conducted to amplify rDNA. The PCR products were sequenced and analyzed with BLAST

    Results: The patient returned from a one-week tour in a tropical rain forest in Malaysia. The first disease attack occurred in Guangzhou on Oct. 16, 2014, with fever, shivering and sweating. The patient was initially diagnosed as malaria and hospitalized on Oct. 26, 2014. Microscopic observation revealed typical forms of P. knowlesi in blood smear. The red blood cells became enlarged, with big trophozoites appearing as a ring with dual cores and dark brown malaria pigment. The trophozoites were slightly bigger and thicker than P. falciparum. The schizont had 6-8 merozoites, with obvious brown malaria pigment. PCR resulted in a specific band of 1 099 bp. BLAST analysis showed that the sequence of the PCR product was 99% homologous to P. knowlesi (acession No. AM910985.1, L07560.1 and AY580317.1). The patient was diagnosed as P. knowlesi infection, and was then given an 8-day treatment with chloroquine and primaquine, together with dihydroartemisinin piperaquine phosphate tablet. The patient was discharged after recovery on Oct. 28, 2014.

    Conclusion: According to the clinical symptoms, epidemiological history and laboratory test, the patient has been confirmed as P. knowlesi infection. It may also be the first active case of knowlesi malaria reported in China.

    The Toba volcanic system in Indonesia has produced two of the largest eruptions (>2,000 km3 dense-rock equivalent [DRE] each) on Earth since the Quaternary. U-Pb crystallization ages of zircon span a period of ∼600 ky before each eruptive event, and in the run-up to each eruption, the mean and variance of the zircons' U content decrease. To quantify the process of accumulation of eruptible magma underneath the Toba caldera, we integrated these observations with thermal and geochemical modeling. We show that caldera-forming eruptions at Toba are the result of progressive thermal maturation of the upper crustal magma reservoir, which grows and chemically homogenizes, by sustained magma influx at average volumetric rates between 0.008 and 0.01 km3/y over the past 2.2 My. Protracted thermal pulses related to magma-recharge events prime the system for eruption without necessarily requiring an increased magma-recharge rate before the two supereruptions. If the rate of magma input was maintained since the last supereruption of Toba at 75 ka, eruptible magma is currently accumulating at a minimum rate of ∼4.2 km3 per millennium, and the current estimate of the total volume of potentially eruptible magma available today is a minimum of ∼315 km3 Our approach to evaluate magma flux and the rate of eruptible magma accumulation is applicable to other volcanic systems capable of producing supereruptions and thereby could help in assessing the potential of active volcanic systems to feed supereruptions.
