    The physicochemical properties of Musa Acuminata cv. Berangan at different ripening stages
    (1, 2 and 3) were evaluated in the study. A visual attribute such as colour usually leads to
    misclassification as it can be subjected to different individual interpretation. Therefore, various
    measurements were conducted to determine the relationship between ripening stages and
    physicochemical properties of the fruit such as colour, pH, total soluble solids content (TSS)
    and firmness. Results showed that there were significant changes in physicochemical properties
    as ripening stages increased. Results also indicated that the correlations between ripening
    stages and firmness and pH values were statistically significant compared to other parameters.
    These relationships can be used to predict the related quality attributes of Berangan bananas.

    It has been long known that affective disorders as a result of organic brain diseases are not uncommon. Neurological disorders seem to be significant as risk factors for newly diagnosed mania in the elderly. It has been theorized that lesions in the right cerebral hemisphere and limbic structures may produce symptoms suggestive of mania. Even though specific areas of involvement had not been determined, this case discussed below clearly reports a right sided lesion. One of the reasons why not much is known yet about this clinical entity is the rarity of this occurrence. In fact, in one large scale study, only 2 patients out of 700 were identified with mania.

    The objective of this study was to identify the effect of different drying methods on vitamin A activity of formulated weaning food. Weaned foods on vitamin A activity of formulated using treated cowpea flour, locally available rice flour, banana-pumpkin, skim milk powder and sugar in the ratio 35:35:15:15:5. Treated cowpea flour consisted of original cowpea flour, 24 h germinated cowpea flour. Each treated flour was mixed separately with the other ingredients and cooked into a slurry. Each mixture was either oven-dried or freeze-dried to produce a dry flaky mixture. The carotenoid composition of the product was determined by HPLC. Vitamin A activity of oven-dried weaning food was significantly reduced (p<0.05) compared to freeze-dried weaning food. The freeze-dried weaning foods showed a higher retinol equivalent than oven-dried weaning foods for all treatments. The results of the study found that an intake of 100 g of freeze-dried weaning foods enriched with banana-pumpkin and cowpea flour provided an adequate amount of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin A for infants.

    The non-destructive feature of optical techniques has gained interests for quality assessment
    of various agricultural produce as well as in food processing technology. The principle and
    interaction of light with food and agricultural produce provide essential information for quality
    assessment which promotes non-destructive inspection methods. This review encompasses the
    determination of optical properties associated with the evaluation of the quality of agricultural
    produce. The understanding of how light interacts with turbid agricultural produce is also
    presented, including light characteristics such as absorption and scattering. A brief overview of
    the estimation and application of the optical parameters in food and agricultural processing are
    discussed. The problems and implementation of optical parameters as well as its future trend
    are also included.

    The thin layer drying kinetics of pumpkin slices (Cucurbita moschata) were experimentally
    investigated in a convective hot air dryer. In order to select the appropriate model for predicting
    the drying kinetics of pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata), twelve thin layer semi theoretical,
    theoretical and empirical models, widely used in describing the drying behaviour of agricultural
    products were fitted to the experimental data. The Page and Two term exponential models
    showed the best fit under certain drying conditions. The Hii et al. (2009) model, which was
    adopted from a combination of the Page and Two term models was compared to the other 11
    selected thin layer models based on the coefficient of determination (R2
    ) and sum of squares
    error (SSE). Comparison was made between the experimental and model predicted moisture
    ratio by non-linear regression analysis. Furthermore, the effect of drying temperature and slice
    thickness on the best model constants was evaluated. Consequently, the Hii et al. (2009) model
    showed an excellent fit with the experimental data (R2 > 0.99 and SSE < 0.012) for the drying
    temperatures of 50, 60, 70 and 80 °C and at different sample thicknesses of 3 mm, 5 mm and
    7 mm respectively. Thus, the Hii et al. (2009) model can adequately predict the drying kinetics
    of pumpkin.

    This study investigated the drying kinetic of pumpkin under different drying temperatures (50,
    60, 70 and 80°C), samples thickness (3, 4, 5 and 7mm), air velocity (1.2m/s) and relative
    humidity (40 - 50%). Kinetic models were developed using semi-theoretical thin layer models
    and multi-layer feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN) method. The Hii et al. (2009)
    semi-theoretical model was found to be the most suitable thin layer model while two hidden
    layers with 20 neurons was the best for the ANN method. The selections were based on the
    statistical indicators of coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE) and
    sum of squares error (SSE). Results indicated that the ANN demonstrated better prediction
    than those of the theoretical models with R2, RMSE and SSE values of 0.992, 0.036 and 0.207
    as compared to the Hii et al. (2009) model values of 0.902, 0.088 and 1.734 respectively. The
    validation result also showed good agreement between the predicted values obtained from
    the ANN model and the experimental moisture ratio data. This indicates that an ANN can
    effectively describe the drying process of pumpkin.

    For application to the analysis of aflatoxins (AF) in commercial peanut and corn products, the ISOLUTE multimode column (IMC, solid phase multifunctional column) method was validated by comparing with the modified Florisil column (MFC) method. Twenty-two peanut and eight corn products from Malaysia and the Philippines were analysed for AFB1, AFB2, AFG1 and AFG2 firstly by the MFC method and then by the IMC method. For peanut products, 14 out of 22 samples were positive by the two methods in the range of 1-378 micrograms/kg of AF, and correlation coefficients (r) for AFB1 and AFB2 were 0.987 and 0.997, respectively. For corn and corn products, all the samples were positive in the range of 1-130 micrograms/kg, and r values were 0.992 and 0.805 for AFB1 and AFB2 respectively. Thus, the results were significantly (p < 0.01) in close agreement, particularly for lower range of 1-50 micrograms/kg of AF concentrations in all the samples. For the occurrence of AF, 11 (65%) of peanut products from Malaysia were contaminated with AF at a mean level of 50 micrograms/kg (maximum 180 micrograms/kg) and two (40% products from the Philippines were contaminated with as high as 375 micrograms/kg and 177 micrograms/kg of AF, respectively. All the corn products from the Philippines were contaminated with AF at a mean level of 44 micrograms/kg (maximum 130 micrograms/kg). Contamination of commercial foods with high levels of AF is a very important issue to both the countries since these foods are very popular among children.

    A 5-year-old Mongrel was brought presented with the complaint of having serosanguineous discharge from penis for a month since adoption. Physical examination revealed cauliflower-like mass at the bulbus glandis. Presence of numerous anisokaryotic and anisocytotic round to oval histiocytes with multivacuolated cytoplasm from cytology, an evidence of canine transmissibale venereal tumour (CTVT). The mass was successfully surgically resected using electrocautery and was in remission for 12 months (since January 2019).

    The objectives of this study were to assess the practice of molar root canal treatment (RCT) among general dental practitioners (GDPs), confidence level of GDPs in performing molar RCT and to identify factors that influence their confidence in managing molar RCI. One hundred questionnaires were distributed to GDPs in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Fifty questionnaires were delivered by mail and the remaining fifty were hand-delivered. All data was coded and verified. Fiftysix OOPs rcsponded to the questionnaires. Only fortyfive questionnaires were accepted (n=45) as eleven OOPs had never performed molar RCI. Most of the OOPs followed the standard quality guidelines while performing molar RCT except for vitality testing (36.4%) and rubber dam usage (27.3%). In this study, 100% of the GDPs were confident in making diagnosis of perinidicular diseases and 95.4% were confident in performing molar RCT from history taking until obturation. Patients' tolerance and availability of instruments and materials (97.7%) were two factors that most influence the GDPs' confidence level. The. least influcncing factor was undergraduate training (78.1 %). Attending seminars and lectures on endodontic, large number of molar teeth treated for ReT, patLents' affordability to pay for RCT and postgraduate training also influencc GDPs' confidence to a certain degree. From this study, it can be concluded that majority of OOPs complied standard quality guidelines except for vitality testing and rubber dam usage. Most of them were confident in performing molar RCT and were greatly influenced by the availability or"instruments and materials in their clinic and patients' tolerance in receiving molar RCI.

    A survey was carried out using a medical examination format that was prepared by the Malaysian Medical Association. The findings of the survey show that of the 266 cases surveyed, 64 drivers (24% of cases surveyed) are either totally unfit to drive or temporarily unfit to drive heavy goods and passenger vehicles. This is clear indication that the current format that is being used by the Road Transport Department is inadequate and needs to be reviewed. It must also be stressed that all the above 64 drivers have been certified fit using the existing Road Transport Department format and are currently driving in our highways and roads. Heavy vehicle goods and passenger vehicle drivers if not properly examined and medically certified are not only be endangering their own lives but also that of others. It is therefore recommended that based on the data available from this survey, the Road Transport Department should seriously consider adopting the medical examination format that was formalised by the Malaysian Medical Association and used in this survey.

    Objectives: Weight gain remains an issue for contraceptive users due to the high prevalence of obesity. This retrospective study compares the weight gain between hormonal and non-hormonal contraceptive users in government health clinics in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia.

    Methods: A total of 380 women who had used the same contraceptive method for at least twelve months were recruited in this study. Covariance analysis was done to compare the weight gain between hormonal and non-hormonal contraceptive users, while studying the same confounders [age, household income, number of pregnancies, and baseline body mass index (BMI)].

    Results: Hormonal methods were more commonly used. The mean weight gain among hormonal users (adjusted mean 2.85, 95% CI 2.45, 3.24) was significantly higher than non-hormonal users (adjusted mean 0.46, 95% CI -0.73, 1.65; p-value <0.001), after controlling for age, household income, number of pregnancies, and baseline BMI.

    Conclusion: The possibility of weight gain following the use of hormonal methods should be investigated and non-hormonal methods should be considered to prevent weight gain.

    Commodities originating from tropical and subtropical climes are prone to chilling injury (CI). This injury could affect the quality and marketing potential of mango after harvest. This will later affect the quality of the produce and subsequent consumer acceptance. In this study, the appearance of CI symptoms in mango was evaluated non-destructively using multispectral imaging. The fruit were stored at 4 °C to induce CI and 12 °C to preserve the quality of the control samples for 4 days before they were taken out and stored at ambient temperature for 24 hr. Measurements using multispectral imaging and standard reference methods were conducted before and after storage. The performance of multispectral imaging was compared using standard reference properties including moisture content (MC), total soluble solids (TSS) content, firmness, pH, and color. Least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) combined with principal component analysis (PCA) were used to discriminate CI samples with those of control and before storage, respectively. The statistical results demonstrated significant changes in the reference quality properties of samples before and after storage. The results also revealed that multispectral parameters have a strong correlation with the reference parameters of L* , a* , TSS, and MC. The MC and L* were found to be the best reference parameters in identifying the severity of CI in mangoes. PCA and LS-SVM analysis indicated that the fruit were successfully classified into their categories, that is, before storage, control, and CI. This indicated that the multispectral imaging technique is feasible for detecting CI in mangoes during postharvest storage and processing.

    PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This paper demonstrates a fast, easy, and accurate method of identifying the effect of cold storage on mango, nondestructively. The method presented in this paper can be used industrially to efficiently differentiate different fruits from each other after low temperature storage.

    The number of maxillofacial trauma (MFT) cases attended in the Emergency Department is progressively increasing in trend, owing to the rising statistics of motor-vehicle accidents (MVAs) and urban assaults in addition to occupational-related injuries. Prompt and thorough assessment is important for accurate diagnosis and paramount treatment plans. We will be discussing a case of unusual presentation of an orbital floor fracture post-MVA which was treated conservatively based on the clinical assessments during follow-ups, supported by radiological findings. We will also briefly discuss the different radiological modalities available in assessing MFT and late presentation of enophthalmos.

    This study investigates the presence and distribution of organochlorine pesticides in streams and the lake in the Sembrong Lake Basin in Malaysia. The catchment of Sembrong Lake has been converted to agricultural areas over the past 30 years, with oil palm plantations and modern agricultural farming being the main land use. Surface water samples were collected from eight sites comprising the stream and lake and analysed for 19 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). In situ measurement of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and conductivity were also undertaken at each site. Aldrin, endrin, δ-BHC, 4,4-DDT, methoxychlor and endosulfan were the main OCPs detected in the lake basin. The total OCP concentration ranged between 5.42 and 349.2 ng/L. The most frequently detected OCPs were δ-BHC, heptachlor and aldrin. The maximum values detected were 23.0, 43.2 and 50.4 ng/L respectively. The highest concentration of OCPs was attributed to 4,4-DDT, but such high residue was rare and only detected once. Other OCP residues were low.     With increasing public demand for ready-to-eat fresh-cut fruit, the postharvest industry requires the development and adaptation of monitoring technologies to provide customers with a product of consistent quality. The fresh-cut trade of pineapples (Ananas comosus) is on the rise, favored by the sensory quality of the product and mechanization of the cutting process. In this paper, a multispectral imaging-based approach is introduced to provide distribution maps of moisture content, soluble solids content, and carotenoids content in fresh-cut pineapple. A dataset containing hyperspectral images (380-1690 nm) and reference measurements in 10 regions of interest of 60 fruit (n = 600) was prepared. Ranking and uncorrelatedness (based on ReliefF algorithm) and subset selection (based on CfsSubset algorithm) approaches were applied to find the most informative wavelengths in which bandpass optical filters or light sources are commercially available. The correlation coefficient and error metrics obtained by cross-validated multilayer perceptron neural network models indicated that the superior selected wavelengths (495, 500, 505, 1215, 1240, and 1425 nm) resulted in prediction of moisture content with R = 0.56, MAPE = 1.92%, soluble solids content with R = 0.52, MAPE = 14.72%, and carotenoids content with R = 0.63, MAPE = 43.99%. Prediction of chemical composition in each pixel of the multispectral images using the calibration models yielded spatially distributed quantification of the fruit slice, spatially varying according to the maturation of single fruitlets in the whole pineapple. Calibration models provided reliable responses spatially throughout the surface of fresh-cut pineapple slices with a constant error. According to the approach to use commercially relevant wavelengths, calibration models could be applied in classifying fruit segments in the mechanized preparation of fresh-cut produce.

    There is an increasing demand for anticancer agent in treating colorectal cancer (CRC) with frequently mutated TP53 and KRAS genes. Phytochemical compounds are suitable as chemoprevention for CRC since dietary factor is a major risk factor. Anthraquinones from Morinda citrifolia L. were previously reported with various pharmacological properties. Various in vitro experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of two anthraquinones: damnacanthal and morindone on the cell proliferation, cell cycle, apoptosis, gene expression and protein expression in two CRC cells: HCT116 and HT29. Real-time monitoring of CRC cells showed that both anthraquinones exerted significant anti-proliferative effects in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Next, cell cycle analysis revealed an increase in the percentage of CRC cells in the G1 phase under anthraquinones treatment. Fluorescence microscopy also showed an increment of apoptotic cells under anthraquinones' treatment. siRNA transfection was conducted to evaluate the mediating effect of gene knockdown on mutated TP53 and KRAS in CRC cells. Before transfection, qRT-PCR analysis showed that only morindone downregulated the gene expression of mutated TP53 and KRAS and then further downregulated them after transfection. Both damnacanthal and morindone treatments further downregulated the expression of these two genes but upregulated at the protein expression level. Furthermore, gene knockdown also sensitised CRC cells to both damnacanthal and morindone treatments, resulting in lowered IC50 values. The accumulation of cells at the G1 phase was reduced after gene knockdown but increased after damnacanthal and morindone treatments. In addition, gene knockdown has increased the number of apoptotic cells in both cell lines and further increment was observed after anthraquinone treatment. In conclusion, morindone could be a competitive therapeutic agent in CRC by exhibiting multiple mechanism of anti-cancer actions.

    Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a significant concern, with incidences reported up to 70% following cardiac surgery. Therefore, we aim to evaluate the incidence of POCD after elective coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery at our single centre over a one-year period from August 2021 to July 2022. We included 34 patients in the study and conducted serial cognitive assessments up to three months post-surgery. Interestingly, our findings indicated an absence of POCD among patients who underwent elective CABG. Reasons contributing to this outcome are multifactorial, which may include the patients' younger age, higher educational levels, lack of pre-existing neurological disorders, meticulous intraoperative cerebral saturation monitoring, and the duration of aortic crossclamp and cardiopulmonary bypass time.

    Baeckea frutescens or locally known as Cucur atap is used as antibacterial, antidysentery, antipyretic and diuretic agent. In Malaysia and Indonesia, they are used as an ingredient of the traditional medicine given to mothers during confinement. A three-steps infra-red (IR) macro-fingerprinting method combining conventional IR spectra, and the secondary derivative spectra with two dimensional infrared correlation spectroscopy (2D-IR) have been proved to be effective methods to examine a complicated mixture such as herbal medicines. This study investigated the feasibility of employing multi-steps IR spectroscopy in order to study the main constituents of B. frutescens and its different extracts (extracted by chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol and aqueous in turn). The findings indicated that FT-IR and 2D-IR can provide many holistic variation rules of chemical constituents. The structural information of the samples indicated that B. frutescens and its extracts contain a large amount of flavonoids, since some characteristic absorption peaks of flavonoids, such as ∼1600cm(-1), ∼1500cm(-1), ∼1450cm(-1), and ∼1270cm(-1) can be observed. The macroscopical fingerprint characters of FT-IR and 2D-IR spectra can not only provide the information of main chemical constituents in medicinal materials and their different extracts, but also compare the components differences among the similar samples. In conclusion, the multi-steps IR macro-fingerprint method is rapid, effective, visual and accurate for pharmaceutical research.

    A new cobalt(II) ion selective electrode based on palladium(II) dichloro acetylthiophene fenchone azine(I) has been developed. The best membrane composition is found to be 10:60:10:21.1 (I)/PVC/NaTPB/DOP (w/w). The electrode exhibits a Nerstian response in the range of 1.0 × 10(-1)-1.0 × 10(-6)M with a detection limit and slope of 8.0 × 10(-7)M and 29.6 ± 0.2 mV per decade respectively. The response time is within the range of 20-25s and can be used for a period of up to 4 months. The electrode developed reveals good selectivity for cobalt(II) and could be used in pH range of 3-7. The electrode has been successfully used in the determination of cobalt(II) in water samples.
