Background: Somalia is a country that still practices Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Female genital mutilation (FGM) constitutes all procedures, which involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs whether for cultural or any other nontherapeutic reasons.
Methodology: A cross-sectional community based study was conducted among males and females above 18 years of age attending the Out Patient Clinic and Mother & Child Clinic of Elder District, Rural Hospital Galgadud Region, Somalia in June 2006 using a structured questionnaire to access the respondents’ knowledge, attitude and practice.
Results: Four hundred respondents were interviewed and male respondents were noted to be more knowledgeable than their female counterparts (p 0.004) and so does respondents with formal education (p <0.001) and had occupation (p <0.001). Majority of the female respondents (97.1%) favors the practices of FGM and reasons such as to protect virginity (p <0.001), increase marital opportunity (p <0.001) and religious recommendations (p <0.001) were noted to be the important
factors in the continuation of FGM. All of the female respondents have had some form of FGM, giving the prevalence rate of 100% with 64.1% underwent the procedure at between the age of 5-10 years old and the commonest form of FGM were infibulations. Mother (69.4%) was the important decision maker for these women.
Conclusion: Aggressive education programme should be introduced targeting the women in this community. They should be well informed on the complication of FGM and its health effects. Providing clinics will help to alleviate some of the complications related to FGM. Law on protecting women from these practices should be introduced and enforced.

Many occupations in industry such as metal stamping workers, electronics parts assembly operators, automotive industry welders, and lathe operators require working in a standing posture for a long time. Prolonged standing can contribute to discomfort and muscle fatigue particularly in the back and legs. This study developed the prolonged standing strain index (PSSI) to quantify the risk levels caused by standing jobs, and proposed recommendations to minimize the risk levels. Risk factors associated with standing jobs, such as working posture, muscles activity, standing duration, holding time, whole-body vibration, and indoor air quality, were the basis for developing the PSSI. All risk factors were assigned multipliers, and the PSSI was the product of those multipliers. Recommendations for improvement are based on the PSSI; however, extensive studies are required to validate their effectiveness. multipliers, and the PSSI was the product of those multipliers. INTRODUCTION: The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the incidence of tuberculosis among healthcare workers is increasing yearly and exceeds the incidence of tuberculosis in the community in almost all the countries that report to the WHO. The problem is greater in countries with high burden of tuberculosis disease in the community. The cause of this problem may be contributed by the attitudes of the healthcare workers themselves, such as non-compliance of the procedures at their work tasks meant to prevent them from contracting the disease. Therefore, this study aims to assess the perceptions and the behaviours of healthcare workers in relation to compliance towards prevention activities on tuberculosis at their workplace.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: We plan to conduct a two-phase exploratory sequential mixed method study to determine the factors affecting compliance of Malaysian healthcare workers towards tuberculosis prevention programmes in their workplace based on the guidelines of the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. Phase one is a qualitative study with a focus group discussion and questionnaire development and phase two is a quantitative study where data will be collected among healthcare workers in government clinics and hospitals in Selangor. The data from phase one will be analysed using Atlas.Ti software for thematic analysis and data from phase two will be analysed using SEM AMOS software for structural equation modelling.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged standing has been hypothesized as a vital contributor to discomfort and muscle fatigue in the workplace. The objective of this study was to develop a decision support system that could provide systematic analysis and solutions to minimize the discomfort and muscle fatigue associated with prolonged standing.

METHODS: The integration of object-oriented programming and a Model Oriented Simultaneous Engineering System were used to design the architecture of the decision support system.

RESULTS: Validation of the decision support system was carried out in two manufacturing companies. The validation process showed that the decision support system produced reliable results.

CONCLUSION: The decision support system is a reliable advisory tool for providing analysis and solutions to problems related to the discomfort and muscle fatigue associated with prolonged standing. Further testing of the decision support system is suggested before it is used commercially.

INTRODUCTION: Workplace violence (WPV) has become a universal concern and is perceived as a serious safety and health threat, especially in healthcare settings. Very few studies have been done previously to determine the prevalence of WPV and associated risk factors among nurses in Malaysia. Among the health professionals, nurses spend most of their time with patients compared to other healthcare professionals. Several studies suggested that nurses had a higher risk of experiencing WPV. This study determined the prevalence and associated risk factors of WPV among nurses in a government hospital.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 410 randomly selected respondents among nurses in a government hospital in Penang, Malaysia. Data were gathered through a self-administered questionnaire consisting of a standardised questionnaire regarding WPV.

RESULTS: The prevalence of reported WPV was 43.9%. The most common forms of WPV were verbal abuse (82.2%), followed by psychological violence (8.9%), physical violence (8.3%), and sexual violence (0.6%). The perpetrators were primarily among relatives of patients (51.7%), followed by patients (30%). Multiple logistic regression demonstrated that nurses working in the emergency department (ED) were six times more likely to experience WPV than in other departments (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) 6.139, 95% CI: 1.28 - 4.03). In addition, nurses in the age group of ≤30 years old were twice more likely to experience WPV (AOR 2.275, 95% CI: 3.4-11.08).

CONCLUSION: This study indicates that the prevalence of WPV among nurses is high and most common among young nurses and those working in ED. Hence, hospital management should develop guidelines and comprehensive policies to prevent WPV. In addition, education and training, especially among young nurses and those working in the ED, are needed to increase their knowledge in the management and prevention of WPV and counselling sessions for nurses who have experienced WPV.

INTRODUCTION: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a common problem worldwide. Increased globalisation, as well as industrialisation, gives rise to an increase in the incidence of NIHL worldwide. Malaysia is not spared from this problem, either. The objectives were to determine the prevalence of NIHL and its associated factors among manufacturing factory workers.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was done in Kuching, Sarawak, involving 173 randomly selected respondents among manufacturing factory workers. Data collected were respondents' workplace monitoring data and their audiometry records obtained from the factory record, and the otoscopy examinations performed. In addition, respondents were required to fill up an interviewer-guided questionnaire.

    RESULTS: The prevalence of NIHL was high (49.7%). The factors which were found to have a significant association with NIHL in bivariate analysis were age (p < 0.05, 95% CI), male gender (p < 0.05; OR - 7.60; CI 3.34 -18.38), duration of employment (p <0.05), knowledge of noise level (p < 0.05; OR - 4.11; CI 1.10 - 15.28), working at polishing department (p < 0.05; OR - 4.23; CI 2.13 - 8.43), and smoking (p < 0.05; OR - 39.6; CI 16.5 - 94.8). Pack-years of smoking were also found to have a significant association with p < 0.05. However, only smoking was statistically significant in multivariate analysis, where the risk of developing NIHL was 27.55 (p < 0.005; CI 10.74 - 70.64) among smokers.

CONCLUSION: The high prevalence of NIHL despite the existing Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) may indicate that there may be some elements in HCP that require close monitoring by the factory management, and the importance of smoking cessation among the workers exposed to noise at the workplace should be highlighted.

BACKGROUND: There have been some concerns related to manual handling of large items in industry. Manual handling operations of large sheet metal may expose workers to risks related to efficiency as well as occupational safety and health. Large sheet metals are difficult to move and burdensome to lift/transfer, and handling the sharp sheet edges may result in contact stress and/or cut injuries on the workers.

METHODS: Through observation, interview, and immersive simulation activities, a few problems related to current handling of sheet metals were identified. A sheet metal trolley-lifter was then designed and fabricated to address these issues. A pilot study on the use of the developed trolley-lifter for handling sheet metals was conducted to compare between the new and traditional handling methods.

RESULTS: The pilot study of the trolley-lifter showed promising results in terms of improving the cycle time, manpower utilization, and working postures compared with the traditional handling method.

CONCLUSION: The trolley-lifter offers an alternative solution to automation and a mechanized assistive device by providing a simple mechanism to assist the handling of sheet metals effectively and safely.
