    Contamination of groundwater by harmful substances poses significant risks to both drinking water sources and aquatic ecosystems, making it a critical environmental concern. Most on-land spill events release organic molecules known as light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs), which then seep into the ground. Due to their low density and organic composition, they tend to float as they reach the water table. LNAPLs encompass a wide range of non-aqueous phase liquids, including various petroleum products, and can, over time, develop carcinogenic chemicals in water. However, due to frequent changes in hydraulic head, the confinement may fail to contain them, causing them to extend outward. When it contaminates water wells, people cannot reliably consume the water. The removal of dangerous contaminants from groundwater aquifers is made more challenging by LNAPLs. It is imperative to analyze the mechanisms governing LNAPL migration. As a response to this need and the associated dispersion of contaminants into adjacent aquifers, we have conducted a comprehensive qualitative literature review encompassing the years 2000-2022. Groundwater variability, soil structure, and precipitation have been identified as the three primary influential factors, ranked in the following order of significance. The rate of migration is shown to rise dramatically in response to changes in groundwater levels. Different saturation zones and confinement have a major effect on the lateral migration velocity. When the various saturation zones reach a balance, LNAPLs will stop moving. Although higher confinement slows the rate of lateral migration, it speeds up vertical migration. Beyond this, the lateral or vertical movement is also influenced by differences in the permeability of soil strata. Reduced mobility and tighter containment are the outcomes of migrating through fine-grained, low-porosity sand. The gaseous and liquid phases of LNAPLs move more quickly through coarse-grained soils. Due to the complexities and uncertainties associated with LNAPL behavior, accurately foreseeing the future spread of LNAPLs can be challenging. Although studies have utilized modeling techniques to simulate and predict LNAPL migration, the inherent complexities and uncertainties in the subsurface environment make it difficult to precisely predict the extent of LNAPL spread in the future. The granular soil structure considerably affects the porosity and pore pressure.

    Nocistatin and nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) are two neuropeptides which may have opposite effects in several biological functions but their neuro-anatomical sites of interaction are not fully clear. We investigated interaction between the effect of intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of nocistatin and N/OFQ, on c-Fos expression in the mouse thalamus, using c-Fos immunohistochemistry. We found that co-injection of nocistatin with N/OFQ significantly modulates c-Fos expression in the thalamus. The present study strongly suggests that "Nocistatin-Nociceptin" interaction system in the thalamus may be the promising neuromodulatory sites in the investigation of unlocking their possible therapeutic circuit in nociception, memory and anxiety.

    INTRODUCTION: The differential diagnosis of caecal mass is broad and the inclusion of appendiceal pathologies is an important element.

    CASE REPORT: We report a 37-year-old woman with recurrent right iliac fossa pain. Computed tomography scan revealed a caecal mass suggesting complete inversion or intussusception of the appendix, which was confirmed by pathologic microscopic examination. This case report discusses appendiceal intussusception with emphasis on diagnosis and treatment options.

    DISCUSSION: Appendiceal intussusception is a rare entity and the complete type typically presents as a polypoid lesion located at the appendiceal orifice in the caecum. It is imperative to include this entity in the differential diagnosis of caecal mass, especially during colonoscopy, as the removal of this polypoid lesion can result in a devastating caecal perforation or haemorrhage.

    A meandered-microstrip fed circular shaped monopole antenna loaded with vertical slots on a high dielectric material substrate (ε r = 15) is proposed in this paper. The performance criteria of the proposed antenna have been experimentally verified by fabricating a printed prototype. The experimental results show that the proposed antenna has achieved wider bandwidth with satisfactory gain by introducing meandered-microstrip feeding in assistant of partial ground plane. It is observed that, the -10 dB impedance bandwidth of the proposed antenna at lower band is 44.4% (600 MHz-1 GHz) and at upper band is 28% (2.25 GHz-2.95 GHz). The measured maximum gains of -1.18 dBi and 4.87 dBi with maximum radiation efficiencies have been observed at lower band and upper band, respectively. The antenna configuration and parametric study have been carried out with the help of commercially available computer-aided EM simulator, and a good accordance is perceived in between the simulated and measured results. The analysis of performance criteria and almost consistent radiation pattern make the proposed antenna a suitable candidate for UHF RFID, WiMAX, and WLAN applications.

    Ubiquitous personal health records, which can accompany a person everywhere, are a necessary requirement for ubiquitous healthcare. Contextual information related to health events is important for the diagnosis and treatment of disease and for the maintenance of good health, yet it is seldom recorded in a health record. We describe a dual cellphone-and-Web-based personal health record system which can include 'external' contextual information. Much contextual information is available on the Internet and we can use ontologies to help identify relevant sites and information. But a search engine is required to retrieve information from the Web and developing a customized search engine is beyond our scope, so we can use Google Custom Search API Web service to get contextual data. In this paper we describe a framework which combines a health-and-environment 'knowledge base' or ontology with the Google Custom Search API to retrieve relevant contextual information related to entries in a ubiquitous personal health record.

    Multivariate control charts have been applied in many sectors. One of the sectors that employ this method is network intrusion detection. However, the issue arises when the conventional control chart faces difficulty monitoring the network-traffic data that do not follow a normal distribution as required. Consequently, more false alarms will be found when inspecting network traffic data. To settle this problem, support vector data description (SVDD) is suggested. The control chart based on the SVDD distance can be applied for the non-normal distribution, even the unknown distributions. Kernel density estimation (KDE) is the nonparametric approach that can be applied in estimating the control limit of the non-parametric control charts. Based on these facts, a multivariate chart based on the integrated SVDD and KDE (SVDD-KDE) is proposed to monitor the network's anomaly. Simulation using the synthetic dataset is performed to examine the performance of the SVDD-KDE chart in detecting multivariate data shifts and outliers. Based on the simulation results, the proposed method produces better performance in detecting shifts and higher accuracy in detecting outliers. Further, the proposed method is applied in the intrusion detection system (IDS) to monitor network attacks. The NSL-KDD data is analyzed as the benchmark dataset. A comparison between the SVDD-KDE chart with the other IDS-based-control chart and the machine learning algorithms is executed. Although the it has high computational cost, the results show that the IDS based on the SVDD-KDE chart produces a high accuracy at 0.917 and AUC at 0.915 with a low false positive rate compared to several algorithms.

    Signal detection and Bayesian inferential tools were applied to salivary biomarkers to improve screening accuracy and efficiency in detecting oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Potential cancer biomarkers are identified by significant differences in assay concentrations, receiver operating characteristic areas under the curve (AUCs), sensitivity, and specificity. However, the end goal is to report to individual patients their risk of having disease given positive or negative test results. Likelihood ratios (LRs) and Bayes factors (BFs) estimate evidential support and compile biomarker information to optimize screening accuracy. In total, 26 of 77 biomarkers were mentioned as having been tested at least twice in 137 studies and published in 16 summary papers through 2014. Studies represented 10 212 OSCC and 25 645 healthy patients. The measure of biomarker and panel information value was number of biomarkers needed to approximate 100% positive predictive value (PPV). As few as 5 biomarkers could achieve nearly 100% PPV for a disease prevalence of 0.2% when biomarkers were ordered from highest to lowest LR. When sequentially interpreting biomarker tests, high specificity was more important than test sensitivity in achieving rapid convergence toward a high PPV. Biomarkers ranked from highest to lowest LR were more informative and easier to interpret than AUC or Youden index. The proposed method should be applied to more recently published biomarker data to test its screening value.

    Background: The impact of asymptomatic pronation on proximal joints during motion has not been well understood, and research on it remains limited. Therefore, the current study determines the effect of asymptomatic pronation of the foot on hip joint kinematics during gait.

    Methods: Forty participants were recruited for the study (20 with asymptomatic pronated feet and 20 with non-pronated feet). Foot assessment was conducted by navicular drop and rear-foot angle tests. Hip joint kinematics were measured via MVN Xsens system 3D-motion capture from sagittal, frontal and transverse planes during gait. An independent t-test was used to identify differences in kinematic variables.

    Results: Both groups were similar in characteristics, and there were no significant differences between the groups in age (P = 0.674) and BMI (P = 0.459). However, there was a significant difference in arch height (P = 0.001) and rear-foot angle (P = 0.001). Our findings showed there were insignificant differences between the asymptomatic pronated foot and non-pronated foot control groups in hip joint kinematics of sagittal (P = 0.618), frontal (P = 0.276), and transverse (P = 0.337) planes during a full gait cycle.

    Conclusion: Patients with asymptomatic pronation of the foot and non-pronation of the foot showed similar movement patterns of hip kinematics in all three planes. The findings of the present study highlight the need for clinicians to consider foot alignment when examining patients with asymptomatic pronation of the foot and non-pronation of the foot.

    The paper making industry is characterized by high rate of water consumption and hence high rate of wastewater generation. The purpose of this research was to assess and optimize the existing complete mix activate sludge treatment plant that is used to treat the high strength paper mill effluent with the highest possible efficiency at a reasonable cost. The collected paper mill wastewater is equalized in an equalization tank before being pumped to the treatment plant. The treatment plant includes chemical treatment unit, complete mix activated sludge and granular media filtration unit. The results showed that effluent of a chemical treatment unit was found to be relatively similar to the laboratory simulated plain sedimentation unit. It can be concluded that addition of chemical coagulant can be eliminated with an overall saving of chemical addition costs. The complete mixing activated sludge achieved good removal of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Furthermore, the results showed that the plant is operated under low BOD:P ratio. The treatment efficiency of the plant can be improved by increasing the phosphorous dose to the plant to have BOD:P ratio of 100:0.5 to 100:1. It was found that 50% of the treated effluent is recycled to the manufacturing process, however this percentage can be increased through proper plant optimization and control of nutrient addition to the activated sludge unit.

    The effect of osmotic stress was carried out to determine the resistance to salt toxicity using 4 Continuous
    Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR). A CSTR digestion study revealed that digesters seeded with an inoculum
    from a conventional mesophilic digester treating municipal wastewater and fed on domestic wastewater
    (DW) plus salts were able to acclimate successfully to a final salt concentration of 10 g l-1. The digesters
    showed some disturbances during the acclimatisation period as indicated by reductions in specific methane
    production (SMP), specific biogas production (SBP), pH and increases in Intermediate Alkalinity /Partial
    Alkalinity (1A/PA) ratio and Volatile Fatty Acid (VFA) concentration. This study revealed the order
    of disturbance was Sodium Chloride (NaCl) > Potassium Chloride (KCl) > KCl + NaCl. The average
    values for SMP after stabilisation were below those in the controlled digester, at 0.335 (controlled),
    0.323 (NaCl), 0.316 (KCl + NaCl) and 0.308 l CH4 g-1 COD added (KCl).

    The study on the efficacy of oral analgesics reported that no single class of drug is effective in post-surgical dental pain. Pain following removal of third molar is most commonly used and widely accepted acute pain model for assessing the analgesic effect of drugs in humans. Reports demonstrated that analgesic efficacy in the human dental model is highly predictive. The high incidence of false-negative findings in analgesic investigations hinders the process of molecular discovery. Molecular mechanism of post-surgical pain is not known. More importantly, the animal model for postoperative dental pain is not well established. In an attempt to discover an effective post-surgical dental pain blocker with acceptable side effects, it is essential to elucidate the molecular mechanism of post-operative dental pain. The present study investigated mandibular molars extraction in rat as an animal model for the post-operative dental pain in central nervous system. Using c-Fos immunohistochemistry, we demonstrated that pre administration of GBP (150 mg/kg. i.p) significantly (p< 0.01) neutralized the surgical molar extraction induced c-Fos expression bilaterally in rat hypothalamus. Present results indicate that pain after surgical molar extraction might follow novel neural pathways therefore difficult to treat with existing anti-nociceptive drugs.

    This paper proposes a small sized, low-cost multiband monopole antenna which can cover the WiMAX bands and C-band. The proposed antenna of 20 × 20 mm(2) radiating patch is printed on cost effective 1.6 mm thick fiberglass polymer resin dielectric material substrate and fed by 4 mm long microstrip line. The finite element method based, full wave electromagnetic simulator HFSS is efficiently utilized for designing and analyzing the proposed antenna and the antenna parameters are measured in a standard far-field anechoic chamber. The experimental results show that the prototype of the antenna has achieved operating bandwidths (voltage stand wave ratio (VSWR) less than 2) 360 MHz (2.53-2.89 GHz) and 440 MHz (3.47-3.91 GHz) for WiMAX and 1550 MHz (6.28-7.83 GHz) for C-band. The simulated and measured results for VSWR, radiation patterns, and gain are well matched. Nearly omnidirectional radiation patterns are achieved and the peak gains are of 3.62 dBi, 3.67 dBi, and 5.7 dBi at 2.66 GHz, 3.65 GHz, and 6.58 GHz, respectively.

    Generally, industrial gas turbines (IGT) face transient behavior during start-up, load change, shutdown and variations in ambient conditions. These transient conditions shift engine thermal equilibrium from one steady state to another steady state. In turn, various aero-thermal and mechanical stresses are developed that are adverse for engine's reliability, availability, and overall health. The transient behavior needs to be accurately predicted since it is highly related to low cycle fatigue and early failures, especially in the hot regions of the gas turbine. In the present paper, several critical aspects related to transient behavior and its modeling are reviewed and studied from the point of view of identifying potential research gaps within the context of fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) under dynamic conditions. Among the considered topics are, (i) general transient regimes and pertinent model formulation techniques, (ii) control mechanism for part-load operation, (iii) developing a database of variable geometry inlet guide vanes (VIGVs) and variable bleed valves (VBVs) schedules along with selection framework, and (iv) data compilation of shaft's polar moment of inertia for different types of engine's configurations. This comprehensive literature document, considering all the aspects of transient behavior and its associated modeling techniques will serve as an anchor point for the future researchers, gas turbine operators and design engineers for effective prognostics, FDD and predictive condition monitoring for variable geometry IGT.

    Mitral stenosis (MS) affects left atrial (LA) function as a result of hemodynamic and myocardial factors that causes significant symptoms and complications. Conventional echocardiographic methods have been practicing to see the improvement of left atrial function after successful percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty (PMBV). Introduction of tissue doppler imaging allows direct and non-invasive measurement of myocardial velocities. The aim of the study was to evaluate LA functions after PMBV using colour tissue doppler imaging. This cross sectional study was performed in Cardiology department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from March 2014 to February 2015. Forty six (46) patients (28 females, mean age: 28.96±5.78 years) presenting with mitral valve stenosis who fulfilled the indications for PMBV were included in the study. Within 24 hours before PMBV, all the patients underwent colour tissue doppler study in addition to routine conventional echocardiographic examinations. Late diastolic velocities (A') measured at the septal and lateral annuli were recorded. All the measurements were repeated 24 hours after PMBV. The PMBV was done using the Inoue technique. After PMBV mitral valve areas (MVA) were significantly increased. Maximum and mean gradients, LA diameter, LA area, LA volume, systolic pulmonary arterial pressure and mean LA pressures were decreased while septal and lateral A' were significantly (p<0.001) increased. Lateral and septal A' velocities were correlated with MVA and inversely related to LA pressure measured invasively during PMBV. Tissue doppler velocities illustrated improvement of left atrial systolic function after PMBV in relation to decreased mean left atrial pressure and increased mitral valve area. Therefore, tissue doppler Imaging is a useful tool to detect improvement of left atrial systolic function after PMBV in patients with mitral stenosis.

    Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoon which causes toxoplasmosis, an important zoonotic disease that is endemic worldwide. Common sources of T. gondii infection in humans are food or water contaminated with oocysts and raw or undercooked meat with cysts. In animals, common sources of infection include feed, water, or litter contaminated with oocysts. The diagnosis and molecular characterization of T. gondii infection in humans and animals is crucial due to public and veterinary health importance. Various traditional and serological methods have been used in clinical practice for toxoplasmosis diagnosis, but interpreting the results remains a challenge. Several molecular techniques have also been used for the detection and genetic characterization of T. gondii , but primarily in research settings. In this paper, we review the techniques that are currently used for the diagnosis and genetic characterization of T. gondii in humans and animals, along with their advantages and disadvantages. The techniques reviewed have laid the groundwork for the future development of more effective and precise detection and characterization of T. gondii . These advances will contribute to a better understanding of epidemiology, prevention and control of toxoplasmosis. Thus, this review would be of particular interest to clinical physicians, veterinarians and researchers.

    Rapid industrialization, urbanization, global warming, and climate change are compromising surface water quality across the globe. Consequently, water conservation is essential for both environmental sustainability and human survival. This study assesses the water quality of the Jamuna River in Bangladesh at five distinct sites during wet and dry seasons. It employs six global water quality indices (WQIs) and contrasts the results with Bangladesh's Environmental Quality Standard (EQS) and the Department of Environment (DoE) criteria. The WQI models used are the Weighted Arithmetic WQI (WAWQI), British Columbia WQI (BCWQI), Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment WQI (CWQI), Assigned WQI (AWQI), Malaysian WQI (MWQI), and Oregon WQI (OWQI). Fifteen physicochemical parameters were analyzed according to each WQI model's guidelines. The findings reveal that most parameters surpass the standard permissible values. The WQI model results indicate that the average water quality across the five sites falls into the lowest category. A comparison of the WQI models suggests potential correlations between WAWQI and AWQI, as well as between MWQI and OWQI. The straightforward presentation of the WQI models indicates that while the river water requires treatment for household and drinking use, it remains suitable for irrigation. The decline in water quality is likely attributable to human activities, urbanization, municipal waste disposal, and industrial effluents. Authorities must prioritize regular monitoring and assessment of water quality to address the identified challenges. Restoring the water to an acceptable standard will become increasingly difficult without proactive measures.

    Coumarins have received a considerable attention in the last three decades as a lead structures for the discovery of orally bioavailable non-peptidic antiviral agents. A lot of structurally diverse coumarins analogues were found to display remarkable array of affinity with the different molecular targets for antiviral agents and slight modifications around the central motif result in pronounced changes in its antiviral spectrum. This manuscript thoroughly reviews the design, discovery and structure-activity relationship studies of the coumarin analogues as antiviral agents focusing mainly on lead optimization and its development into clinical candidates.
