METHODS: Six human subjects were randomly chosen and were healthy at the point of experimentation. Capillary blood was collected via finger-prick method to monitor the glycemic response of every individual for 90 min after ingestion of sugar solution.

MATERIALS & METHODS: A total of 13,098 Enterobacteriaceae isolates from various clinical samples were sent to our laboratory between January 2011 and December 2012. Of these, 90 demonstrated reduced susceptibility to at least one carbapenem and were included in this study. Only 88 isolates were successfully subcultured on blood agar (BA). Another 2 isolates failed to grow and were excluded. Of the 88, 2 isolates had the same identification number (repetitive isolates); therefore, 1 isolate was excluded from further analyses. Only 87 isolates were subjected to molecular detection of the blaOXA-48 and blaOXA-181 genes by polymerase chain reaction.
RESULTS: Eighty-seven non-repetitive isolates grew following subculture on BA. Of these, 9 (10.34%) were positive for OXA-48 (7 Klebsiella pneumoniae, 2 Escherichia coli). Each isolate originated from different patients. All patients had a history of treatment with at least one cephalosporin and/or carbapenem prior to the isolation of OXA-48 CRE. OXA-181 was detected in one (1.15%) out of the 87 isolates; CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of OXA-48 and OXA-181 CRE among all Enterobacteriaceae isolates in our institution is 0.069% and 0.008%, respectively. Nevertheless, our findings suggest that OXA-48 and OXA-181 carbapenemases appear to be important and possibly under-recognised causes of carbapenem resistance in Malaysia.
METHOD: A prospective observational study was performed in 47 patients with FIA treated by SLOFT from September 2017 to February 2019.
RESULTS: There were 47 patients, of whom 33(70.2%) were men. The median age was 39 years (range 30-50 years). All the patients had primary FIA of cryptoglandular origin. The patients were followed up for 1 year and were postoperatively assessed at 2, 4, 12 and 24 weeks and 1 year. The median body mass index was 27.3 kg/m2 (range 24.3-29.4 kg/m2 ) and the median duration of surgery was 15 min (range 13-20 min). Most (83.0%) of the fistulas were trans-sphincteric. The success rates at the end of 24 weeks and 1 year were 87.2% and 80.9%, respectively. No postoperative incontinence was recorded.
CONCLUSION: In our series the success rate of SLOFT was 80.9%. There were no sphincter-related complications. Repeat SLOFT was feasible for cases of recurrence. Therefore, SLOFT should be considered an alternative sphincter-saving procedure to LIFT for the management of FIA.
METHODS: Self-completed surveys were administered face-to-face to 5992 women (aged 45-75 years) in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.
RESULTS: Of 638 postmenopausal women with GSM symptoms, only 35% were aware of the GSM condition, most of whom first heard of GSM through their physician (32%). The most common symptoms were vaginal dryness (57%) and irritation (43%). GSM had the greatest impact on sexual enjoyment (65%) and intimacy (61%). Only 25% had discussed their GSM symptoms with a HCP, and such discussions were mostly patient-initiated (64%) rather than HCP-initiated (24%). Only 21% had been clinically diagnosed with GSM and only 24% had ever used treatment for their symptoms. Three-quarters of those who had used treatment for GSM had discussed their symptoms with a HCP compared to only 9% of those who were treatment-naïve.
CONCLUSION: GSM is underdiagnosed and undertreated in Asia. As discussion of GSM with HCPs appears to be a factor influencing women's awareness and treatment status, a more active role by HCPs to facilitate early discussions on GSM and its treatment options is needed.
METHODS: A 2D model in the axisymmetric coordinates was developed to simulate the electro-thermophysiological responses of the tissue during a single probe bipolar RFA. Two different probe configurations were considered, namely the configuration where the active electrode is longer than the ground and the configuration where the ground electrode is longer than the active. The mathematical model was first verified with an existing experimental study found in the literature.
RESULTS: Results from the simulations showed that heating is confined only to the region around the shorter electrode, regardless of whether the shorter electrode is the active or the ground. Consequently, thermal coagulation also occurs in the region surrounding the shorter electrode. This opened up the possibility for a better customized treatment through the development of RF probes with adjustable electrode lengths.
CONCLUSIONS: The electrode length was found to play a significant role on the outcome of single probe bipolar RFA. In particular, the length of the shorter electrode becomes the limiting factor that influences the mechanics of single probe bipolar RFA. Results from this study can be used to further develop and optimize bipolar RFA as an effective and reliable cancer treatment technique.
