METHODS: This scoping review intended to investigate published studies on the current prevalence and incidence of oral cancer in LMICs. The review was conducted applying the search words "Oral Cancer" and "Mouth neoplasm" as the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) major topic and "Epidemiology" and ("prevalence" OR "incidence") as the MeSH subheading; the search was supplemented by cross-references. Included studies met the following criteria: original studies, reporting of prevalence or incidence rates, population-based studies, studies in English language and studies involving humans.
RESULTS: The sample sizes ranged from 486 to 101,761 with 213,572 persons included. Buccal mucosa is one of the most common sites of oral cancer, associated with the widespread exposure to chewing tobacco. The incidence is likely to rise in the region where gutkha, pan masala, pan-tobacco and various other forms of chewing tobacco are popular.
CONCLUSION: This review contributes to useful information on prevalence and incidence estimates of oral cancer in LMICs.
METHODS: A single-centre retrospective study investigating the feasibility, safety and outcomes of both linear EBUS-inserted FMs and subsequent FM-guided SBRT for UC-oligometastatic disease. Motion analyses of FMs were also performed.
RESULTS: Thirty outpatients underwent 32 EBUS-FM insertion procedures with 100 % success, and no major procedural mortality or morbidity. Minor complications were 4.8 % incidence of delayed FM-displacement. UC FM-guided SBRT was completed in 20 patients with 99.9 % fractions delivered. Median SBRT dose delivered was 40 Gy over a median of 8 fractions. Majority of adverse events were Grade 1 and there was no SBRT-related mortality. Local control with SBRT was 95 %, with overall survival at 1-year and 3-years of 90 % and 56.3 % respectively. Median overall survival after SBRT was 43.6 months. FM movements in UC areas were recorded being greatest in the superior-inferior axis.
CONCLUSION: Combined linear EBUS sampling and FM-insertion in UC thoracic oligometastatic disease is feasible and safe. UC-SBRT to oligometastases using FM guidance was found to have minimal complications and associated with moderate survival up to 3 years post-treatment.
METHODOLOGY: A retrospective study of 865 patients was performed at Netherlands Cancer Institute-Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek Hospital to investigate the feasibility of selective ND (SND). All patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the pharynx and larynx who received primary radiation and underwent salvage ND were included in the study.
RESULT: A total of 29 NDs were analyzed. In 17 neck sides, viable metastases were found (58%), whereas in the other 12 specimens there were no viable metastases. In 16 of the 17 necks (94%), the metastases were located either in level II, III, or IV or in a combination of these 3 levels. Level V was involved in only 1 case (6%).
CONCLUSION: It is well justified to perform a salvage SND (levels II, III, and IV) for pharyngeal and laryngeal carcinoma after primary radiation. In carefully selected cases of supraglottic and oropharyngeal carcinoma, a superselective ND also appears as an efficient option.
METHODS: In the present study, a prenylated flavone (isoglabratephrin) was isolated from aerial parts of Tephrosia apollinea using a bioassay-guided technique. Chemical structure of the isolated compound was elucidated using spectroscopic techniques (NMR, IR, and LC-MC), elemental analysis and confirmed by using single crystal X-ray analysis. The antiproliferative effect of isoglabratephrin was tested using three human cancer cell lines (prostate (PC3), pancreatic (PANC-1), and colon (HCT-116) and one normal cell line (human fibroblast).
RESULTS: Isoglabratephrin displayed selective inhibitory activity against proliferation of PC3 and PANC-1 cells with median inhibitory concentration values of 20.4 and 26.6 μg/ml, respectively. Isoglabratephrin demonstrated proapoptotic features, as it induced chromatin dissolution, nuclear condensation, and fragmentation. It also disrupted the mitochondrial membrane potential in the treated cancer cells.
CONCLUSION: Isoglabratephrin could be a new lead to treat human prostate (PC3) and pancreatic (PANC-1) malignancies.
