    Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) were prepared using rice starch as the polymer, sodium iodide (NaI) as the salt and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide (HMII) as the ionic liquid (IL). The solution casting technique was used for preparation of the PEs. The ionic conductivity and temperaturedependent properties of the PEs were measured and all the SPEs were found to follow the Arrhenius thermal activated model. Ionic conductivity increased as the percentage of ILs increased. The SPE containing 20% (wt) of HMII IL showed the highest ionic conductivity of 1.83×10-3 S/cm. Spectral and structural characterization of the PEs were performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicate that the decomposition temperature (Tdc), glass transition temperatures (Tg) and melting points (Tm) shifted when complexation with HMII occurred. The PEs were used to fabricate dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and the DSSCs were analyzed under a 1-sun simulator. The SPE with the highest ionic conductivity displayed a short circuit current density (Jsc) of 9.07 (mA cm-2), open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.58 (V), a fill factor (FF) of 0.65 and had the highest energy conversion efficiency of 3.42%.

    Citrus canker caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri is a disease affecting the yield and fruit quality of lime (Citrus aurantiifolia). This research investigated endophytic bacteria obtained from six healthy Citrus spp. to inhibit the pathogen and to control citrus canker on lime plants. Numbers of the endophytic bacteria isolated from C. aurantifolia, C. hystrix, C. maxima, C. nobilis, C. reticulata and C. sinensis were 28, 25, 29, 42, 12 and 34 isolates, respectively. The selected endophytic bacteria that were effective against X. citri subsp. citri were Bacillus amyloliquefaciens LE109, B. subtilis LE24 and B. tequilensis PO80. The optimum culture medium for an antagonistic effect on the pathogen in B. amyloliquefaciens LE109 and B. tequilensis PO80 was yeast extract peptone dextrose broth, and in B. subtilis LE24 was modified soluble starch broth. To control citrus canker in lime, young expanded leaves of lime plants were aseptically punctured and inoculated with 30 μl of bacterial suspension of the pathogen (108 CFU/ml in 0.85% NaCl) per punctured location. After the pathogenic inoculation for 24 h, the leaves were then inoculated with 30 μl of the selected endophytic bacteria (108 CFU/ml in 0.85% NaCl), and treated with 30 μl of the culture media containing bioactive compounds produced by the selected endophytic bacteria. The leaves inoculated with cell suspensions of B. amyloliquefaciens LE109 or B. subtilis LE24 could completely control citrus canker. However, the leaves inoculated with B. tequilensis PO80 displayed 10% disease incidence. Additionally, the leaves treated with the crude bioactive compounds of B. amyloliquefaciens LE109 or B. subtilis LE24 could completely control citrus canker. Notably, the leaves treated with the crude bioactive compounds of B. tequilensis PO80 displayed 5% disease incidence. The results of this study showed that the Bacillus strains play important roles in the biocontrol of citrus canker in lime.

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the resistance status of Culex pipiens pipiens to pirimiphos-methyl insecticide. Three field populations of mosquitoes were collected from Tunisia and analyzed in laboratory. The samples studied showed low level of resistance not exceeding 5-folds. The low resistance recorded is particularly interesting, because it leaves a range of tools useable by vector control services. Both metabolic and target-site resistance mechanisms were identified. Different esterases of high activity including A2-B2, A4-B4 (and/or A5-B5) and B12 were observed in studied field samples using starch electrophoresis although opposite results were found using synergists tests on samples # 1 and 3. The polymorphism of AChE1 (Acetylcholinesterase) was analyzed and three phenotypes were detected: susceptible (ACHE1S, phenotype [SS]), resistant (ACHE1R, phenotype [RR]), and heterozygous (phenotype [RS]) of ACHE1. The resistance of Culex pipiens pipiens to pirimiphos-methyl remains low although the occurrences of multiple resistance mechanisms are able to confer high resistance levels to organophosphate insecticides. Therefore, continuous monitoring of resistance is fundamental for rational use of insecticides and mosquito control programs.

    The banana pseudo-stem is not currently utilised in the food industry. The aim of this research was to investigate the chemical and pasting profile of banana pseudo-stem flour (BPF). Wheat flour were substituted with BPF (0, 5, 15 and 30%) and the pasting profile were determined. Results from mineral analysis showed that the levels of sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and phosphorus (P) were higher than those of iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn). The BPF had a 0.04% total titratable acidity (TTA) and a total soluble solid (TSS) of 1.30⁰ Brix with pH 5.41.     Cassava starch was used as feedstock for production of bioethanol by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The cassava starch was hydrolyzed using commercial α-amylase and glucoamylase enzymes followed by a batch ethanol fermentation process using saccharified starch slurry. By using 110 g/L of reducing sugar from saccharified starch slurry, the ethanol yield was promising with maximum ethanol concentration of 20.6 g/L recorded after 55 hours of cultivation process. Three different models - the Logistic model, Luedeking-Piret-like equation and Gompertz equation - were used to characterize and explain the cell growth, reducing sugar consumption and production formation, respectively. The kinetic parameters were estimated by fitting the experimental data to the proposed models using non-linear regression analysis. The correlation coefficient r2 values for the Logistic model, Luedeking-Piret-like equation and the Gompertz equation were 0.994, 0.996 and 0.990, respectively. The high correlation coefficient values indicate that the proposed models were able to describe the ethanol fermentation process.

    Quality attributes of steamed bread without green banana flour (BF) (CON), substituted with 30%
    BF (BBFI) and 30% BF + 8% gluten (BBFII) were determined. The green banana flour (BF) and the mixture of wheat flour (WF) substituted with 30% BF + 8% gluten (FBFII) was significantly highest in water holding capacity and oil holding capacities, respectively. Potassium, calcium and magnesium were significantly higher in BBFI and BBFII than CON. Significantly highest insoluble dietary fibre and total dietary fibre shown in BBFI. Steaming resulted significant reduction in resistant starch content in BBFI as compared with the dough of BBFI I. The specific volume of BBFII and CON showed significant different compared to the BBFI. The BBFII spread ratio was significantly highest and steamer spring lowest than CON. BBFII showed significantly highest in hardness and adhesiveness values but CON was significantly highest in cohesiveness, elasticity and chewiness. L and Hue values was shown highest in CON. BBFII indicated highest acceptability score than other samples.

    The aim of this study was to determine the specific content and type of sugars in selected commercial and traditional kuih in Klang Valley. The selection of the kuih was based on the validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) for sugar. The selected commercial kuih was doughnut coated with sugar (Big Apple) while the ten traditional kuih samples consisted of kuih bingka ubi, kuih kasui, kuih keria, kuih koci, kuih lapis, kuih lopes, kuih onde-onde, kuih sagu, kuih seri muka and kuih talam. The doughnut coated with sugar (Big Apple) was purchased from Big Apple Donuts and Coffee franchise at two different locations, while the traditional kuih were randomly bought from stalls, cafeterias and restaurants around Kuala Lumpur and Rawang. The types and amount of sugar were determined using High Performance High Chromatography (HPLC) with a refractive index (RI) detector. Results showed that doughnut coated with sugar (Big Apple) has the highest starch content (22.6±0.3 g/100g) and kuih keria contained the highest available carbohydrate (41.5±1.7 g/100g), comprising of 24.2±2.4 g/100g total sugar and 17.3±0.7 g/100g of starch. The least available carbohydrate content was found in kuih talam (20.0±0.5 g/100g), which was 50% lower than the one in kuih keria. Major individual sugars detected in all kuih samples were consisted of sucrose (60.0%), glucose (16.2%), fructose (14.0%), maltose (9.5%) and lactose (0.3%). Majority of the kuih samples (90.9%) in this study can be categorized as medium sugar while only kuih keria was categorized as high sugar. Based on the two main ingredients (sugar and flour) used in the preparation of kuih, results showed that all kuih samples can be categorized as medium sugarmedium starch.     Haruan or Channa striatus is source of protein that is widely consumed in the region and its extract
    is well known for having medical values. It is of great advantage if this product could be taken
    orally rather than by injection because the oral route of drug delivery is still preferred by the vast
    majority of patients. However protein and peptides can be denatured or degraded by the acidic pH
    of the stomach and the presence of endogenous enzymes. In order to protect or prevent digestion
    and degradation of the protein in the stomach and to ensure the protein reaches the gastro
    intestinal (GI) tract, Carboxymethyl Starch (CMS) nanogel system was developed using electron
    irradiation method. However stability of HTE during the irradiation process needed to be studied
    before being developed further. In this study, the HTE was irradiated using electron beams. Its
    stability was analysed in terms of physical and chemical changes by looking at colour difference,
    melting point by using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and molecular bonds by using
    Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) respectively. The results of this study were that no apparent
    colour difference was observed with HTE before and after irradiation. These observations were
    supported by the FTIR and DSC results that showed that there were no changes in molecular bonds
    and melting point, compared between no irradiation and irradiation HTE during electron
    irradiation up to 10 kGy. Statistically the test showed no significant difference at p < 0.005 between
    melting temperatures.

    Changes in the physicochemical properties of wheat, sago, tapioca and potato starches were studied
    after heating for 1 hour at 100oC, 110oC, and 120oC and for 2 hours at 120oC. These properties were characterised through the swelling behaviour of starch granules, amount of carbohydrate materials leached from the granules, starch paste retrogradation rate and gel strength. For all starches except wheat, the swelling ability, rate of retrogradation and gel strength decreased while solubility increased with increasing temperature and heating time. Wheat starch followed this pattern only when heated at 120oC for 1 and 2 hours. Gel strength correlated well with the ratio of amylose to amylopectin (R) in the leachate. To produce fried crackers with good expansion properties, the granule has to be sufficiently degraded so as to allow more amylopectin to be leached out to achieve R value of 0.25-0.5. This can be achieved by heating wheat starch at 120oC for 1 hour or longer.

    Proximate composition, pH and amylose content of ripe Cavendish banana flour (RBF) prepared in this study were compared with all-purpose wheat flour (WF). RBF was found to be significantly (P < 0.05) higher in total carbohydrates and minerals content, while significantly (P < 0.05) lower in protein and fat contents compared with those of WF. Wheat-ripe banana composite flours (W-RBF) prepared by partial substitution of WF with RBF were assessed for swelling power, solubility, pasting properties and gel textural properties. Granular swelling of RBF occurred at a higher temperature compared to that of WF, suggesting that more energy and water were required to cook WF-RBF as the presence of soluble carbohydrates would compete for water and this would eventually delay starch hydration and granular expansion during cooking. Higher substitution with RBF led to higher soluble carbohydrates content, and increase in solubility index of WF-RBF. Partial substitution with RBF also resulted in significant (P < 0.05) decrease in pasting properties. A higher substitution of WF with RBF could reduce starch gelatinisation during cooking and retrogradation owing to the reduction of available starch in WF-RBF. All WF-RBF gels were significantly (P < 0.05) firmer and less sticky compared to WF gels.

    exhibits extensive first pass metabolism with poor oral bioavailability (27%–50%) limiting its therapeutic efficiency. The present study involved an attempt to enhance its aqueous solubility by formulating as solid dispersions (SDs) using sodium starch glycollate (SSG) as a carrier. The dispersions were formulated by dispersion method and evaluated by phase solubility, drug content, in vitro release and mathematical modelling. Solid state characterisation of samples was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), near infrared (NIR), Raman analysis and wettability studies. The phase solubility and thermodynamic parameters indicated the spontaneity and solubilisation effect of carrier. The release rate from the dispersions was higher than pure drug and found to increase with an increase in carrier content. The optimised dispersions were selected based on release studies, profiles and dissolution parameters. XRD, DSC, FTIR, NIR and Raman analysis proved the crystallinity reduction, changes in crystal quality and compatibility between drug and carriers. Wettability studies proved the increased wettability in selected dispersions. Based on the findings, possible mechanisms that would have contributed to dissolution enhancement of CLZ were suggested. Such findings could be extrapolated to enhance the aqueous solubility of other poorly water-soluble drugs.

    Current ethanol production processes utilizing crops such as sugar cane and corn starch have been well established over the decade. Other crop such as cassava is a potential candidate in producing ethanol. However, thermal processes are required to hydrolyze starch for the production of fermentable sugars. The processes are energy intensive and could lead to undesirable by-products generation. In this work, the hydrolysis of cassava starch is studied following an experimental design as a statistical problem solving approach. Central composite design (CCD) is used in order to select the most important variables from the simultaneous study on the effect and influence of operating conditions of bioreactor utilized, namely, pH, temperature and substrate concentration, as well as to optimize the process of cassava starch hydrolysis. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that the cassava starch hydrolysis is enhanced by pH and temperature. Model validations show good agreement between experimental results and the predicted responses.

    The nanocellulose derived biodegradable plant biomaterial as nano-coating can be used in the medical, biomedical cosmetics, and bioengineering products. Bio-plastic and some synthetic derived materials are edible and naturally biodegradable. The study was conducted to investigate edible nano-biopolymer based nano-coating of capsules and drugs or other definite biomedical materials from corn leaf biomass. Corn leaf biomass was used as an innovative sample to produce edible nano-coating bioplastic for drug and capsule coating and other industrial uses. The data show the negligible water 0.01% absorbed by bio-plastic nanocoating. Odor represented by burning test was under the completely standard based on ASTM. Moreover, data on color coating, tensile strength, pH, cellulose content have been shown under standard value of ASTM (American standard for testing and materials) standard.     Bacillus lehensis G1 is a cyclodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase) producer, which can degrade starch into cyclodextrin. Here, we present the proteomics data of B. lehensis cultured in starch-containing medium, which is related to the article "Proteome-based identification of signal peptides for improved secretion of recombinant cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase in Escherichia coli" (Ling et. al, in press). This dataset was generated to better understand the secretion of proteins involved in starch utilization for bacterial sustained growth. A 2-DE proteomic technique was used and the proteins were tryptically digested followed by detection using MALDI-TOF/TOF. Proteins were classified into functional groups using the information available in SubtiList webserver (http://genolist.pasteur.fr/SubtiList/).

    Guava seeds are produced as a waste product by the guava processing industry. Their high carbohydrate contents may suit the carbohydrate needs of the feed sector but their high dietary fiber content limits their feed value. The feed values of fruit seeds can be improved through germination, which involves the mobilization of nutrients through seed enzymes and alters the seed carbohydrate composition. The changes of selected carbohydrates in guava (Psidium guajava L.) seeds brought by germination to those in red bean (Vigna angularis) and winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were compared. The contents of soluble carbohydrates, digestible starch, resistant starch and cellulose in the seeds were determined. The radial diffusion method was used to detect carbohydrate-degrading enzymes in the seed extracts. Guava seeds were rich in cellulose (402.2 mg/g), which decreased progressively during germination, probably through the action of cellulase. Winter wheat contained the highest starch content (412.2 mg/g) and also distinct quantities of α-amylase and cellulase. The starch contents of all the seeds decreased, but the soluble carbohydrate contents in red beans and guava seeds increased significantly by the end of germination, suggesting the transient oversupply of reserve metabolites. The content of hydrolyzed polysaccharides increased in the germinated seeds with detectable amounts of cellulose-degrading enzymes present, indicating improved value as feed. Further research is warranted to explore the potential of guava seeds as a source of low-cost animal feed supplements.

    BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have addressed the positive effects of organic amendments on soil and plant productivity under short-term field studies. However, to date, few studies have been conducted on the effects of organic amendment on the orchards where high nutrient bioavailability is required. This study deals with the effects of biochar and compost on soil quality, growth and yield of a replanted apple orchard in the northeast of Iran.

    RESULTS: Biochar+compost application resulted in 37% and 300% higher soil total organic carbon and available phosphorus content, respectively, during the first 3 years of experimentation compared to control. Similarly, trunk diameter and shoot number of apple trees increased 23-26% by the end of the first year. Nevertheless, there were no significant changes in fruitfulness, fruit weight or starch pattern index as productivity indices.

    CONCLUSION: Biochar and compost were beneficial in improving soil quality, mainly by increasing soil nutrient content and decreasing soil bulk density, and in increasing plant growth at early growth stages of apple orchards. However, they failed to enhance overall yield and fruit quality, most likely due to their limited ability to suppress apple replant disease. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

    An extractive bioconversion conducted on soluble starch with cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) enzyme in ethylene oxide-propylene oxide (EOPO)/potassium phosphates liquid biphasic system (LBS) to extract gamma-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) was examined. A range of EOPO (with potassium phosphates) molecular weights was screen to investigate the effect of the latter on the partioning efficency of CGTase and γ-CD. The results show that the optimal top phase γ-CD yield (74.4%) was reached in 35.0% (w/w) EOPO 970 and 10.0% (w/w) potassium phosphate with 2.0% (w/w) sodium chloride. A theoretical explanation for the effect of NaCl on γ-CD was also presented. After a 2 h bioconversion process, a total of 0.87 mg/mL concentration of γ-CD was produced in the EOPO/ phosphates LBS top phase. After the extraction of top phase from LBS, four continuous repetitive batches were successfully conducted with relative CGTase activity of 1.00, 0.86, 0.45, and 0.40 respectively.
