The present study investigates the prospective of substituting inorganic medium with organic food waste compost medium as a nutrient supplement for the cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris FSP-E. Various percentages of compost mixtures were replaced in the inorganic medium to compare the algal growth and biochemical composition. The use of 25% compost mixture combination was found to yield higher biomass concentration (11.1%) and better lipid (10.1%) and protein (2.0%) content compared with microalgae cultivation in fully inorganic medium. These results exhibited the potential of combining the inorganic medium with organic food waste compost medium as an effective way to reduce the cultivation cost of microalgae and to increase the biochemical content in the cultivated microalgae.

A linear quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) model is presented for modeling and predicting the inhibition of HIV-1 integrase. The model was produced by using the stepwise multiple linear regression technique on a database that consists of 67 recently discovered 1,3,4-oxadiazole substituted naphthyridine derivatives. The developed QSAR model was evaluated for statistical significance and predictive power. The key conclusion of this study is that valence connectivity index order 1, lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and dielectric energy significantly affect the inhibition of HIV-1 integrase activity by 1,3,4-oxadiazole substituted naphthyridine derivatives. The selected physicochemical descriptors serve as a first guideline for the design of novel and potent antagonists of HIV-1 integrase.

OBJECTIVE AND STUDY DESIGN: A nonrandomized open labeled clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of Dianex (a poly herbal formulation developed by Apex Laboratories [PVT] Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) in type 2 diabetes mellitus was carried out during a 6-month period.
SETTING/LOCATION: This study was conducted in TMA Pai Hospital, Udupi, South India.
SUBJECTS: A total of 40 patients were recruited for this study. Three patients dropped out of the study leaving a total of 37 patients (11 for monotherapy and 26 for add on therapy).
OUTCOME MEASURES: Eighteen (18) clinical variables were investigated, including liver enzymes, kidney function tests, hematologic parameters, blood glucose, and insulin and lipid profiles.
RESULTS: at the end of 12 weeks it was found that there was a significant decrease in the level of glycated hemoglobin, fasting plasma insulin level, insulin resistance, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. At the end of 24 weeks results were similar to those at 12 weeks. Dianex did not alter the liver function tests, hematological parameters, or kidney function tests.
CONCLUSION: In this preliminary study, Dainex is found to be an effective adjuvant drug with either oral antidiabetic agents or insulin that can be used in the control of blood sugars in diabetic patients. Dianex is a safe drug that does not cause any clinical, hematological or biochemical alteration in major organ systems.

BACKGROUND: The development of severe drug resistance caused by the extensive use of anti-HIV agents has resulted in a greatly extensive reduction in these drugs efficacy.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the important pharmacophoric features and correlate 3D chemical structure of benzothiazinimines with their anti-HIV potential using 2D, 3D-QSAR and pharmacophore modeling studies.

METHODS: QSAR and pharmacophore mapping studies have been used to relate structural features. 2D QSAR and 3D QSAR studies were performed using partial least square and k-nearest neighbor methodology, coupled with various feature selection methods, viz. stepwise, genetic algorithm, and simulated annealing, to derive QSAR models which were further validated for statistical significance.

RESULTS: The physicochemical descriptor XAHydrophilicArea and SsOHE-index, and alignmentindependent descriptor T_C_Cl_6 showed significant correlation with the anti-HIV activity of benzothiazinimines in 2D QSAR. 3D QSAR results showed the significant effect of electrostatic and steric field descriptors in the anti-HIV potential of benzothiazinimines. The generated pharmacophore hypothesis demonstrated the importance of aromaticity and hydrogen bond acceptors.

CONCLUSION: The significant models obtained in this study suggested that these techniques could be used as a guidance for designing new benzothiazinimines with enhanced anti-HIV potential.

The title zwitterion, C17H13NO2 (systematic name: 1-{(1E)-[(4-hy-droxy-phen-yl)iminium-yl]meth-yl}naphthalen-2-olate), features an intra-molecular charge-assisted N+-H⋯O- hydrogen bond. A twist in the mol-ecule is evident around the N-C(hy-droxy-benzene) bond [C-N-C-C torsion angle = 39.42 (8)°] and is reflected in the dihedral angle of 39.42 (8)° formed between the aromatic regions of the mol-ecule. In the crystal, zigzag supra-molecular chains along the a axis are formed by charge-assisted hy-droxy-O-H⋯O(phenoxide) hydrogen bonding. These are connected into a layer in the ab plane by charge-assisted hy-droxy-benzene-C-H⋯O(phenoxide) inter-actions and π-π contacts [inter-centroid distance between naphthyl-C6 rings = 3.4905 (12) Å]. Layers stack along the c axis with no specific inter-actions between them. The Hirshfeld surface analysis points to the significance C⋯H contacts between layers.

In the present study, we have developed a green approach for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (DSAgNPs) using aqueous extract of Durio zibethinus seed and determined its antibacterial, photocatalytic and cytotoxic effects. Surface plasmon resonance confirmed the formation of DSAgNPs with a maximum absorbance (λmax) of 420 nm. SEM and TEM images revealed DSAgNPs were spherical and rod shaped, with a size range of 20 nm and 75 nm. The zeta potential was found to be -15.41 mV. XRD and EDX analyses confirmed the nature and presence of Ag and AgCl. DSAgNPs showed considerable antibacterial activity, exhibited better cytotoxicity against brine shrimp, and shown better photocatalytic activity against methylene blue. Based on the present research work, it can be concluded that DSAgNPs could be used in the field of water treatment, pharmaceuticals, biomedicine, biosensor and nanotechnology in near future.

Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a dominant multisystemic malformation syndrome due to mutations in five genes-NIPBL, SMC1A, HDAC8, SMC3, and RAD21. The characteristic facial dysmorphisms include microcephaly, arched eyebrows, synophrys, short nose with depressed bridge and anteverted nares, long philtrum, thin lips, micrognathia, and hypertrichosis. Most affected individuals have intellectual disability, growth deficiency, and upper limb anomalies. This study looked at individuals from diverse populations with both clinical and molecularly confirmed diagnoses of CdLS by facial analysis technology. Clinical data and images from 246 individuals with CdLS were obtained from 15 countries. This cohort included 49% female patients and ages ranged from infancy to 37 years. Individuals were grouped into ancestry categories of African descent, Asian, Latin American, Middle Eastern, and Caucasian. Across these populations, 14 features showed a statistically significant difference. The most common facial features found in all ancestry groups included synophrys, short nose with anteverted nares, and a long philtrum with thin vermillion of the upper lip. Using facial analysis technology we compared 246 individuals with CdLS to 246 gender/age matched controls and found that sensitivity was equal or greater than 95% for all groups. Specificity was equal or greater than 91%. In conclusion, we present consistent clinical findings from global populations with CdLS while demonstrating how facial analysis technology can be a tool to support accurate diagnoses in the clinical setting. This work, along with prior studies in this arena, will assist in earlier detection, recognition, and treatment of CdLS worldwide.
