    Cryotherapy is a standard treatment for warts. Tuberculin immunotherapy is a novel therapeutic option. We compared the efficacy and safety of cryotherapy versus tuberculin immunotherapy in a randomized, assessor-blinded study. 15 patients were treated with intralesional tuberculin and 15 patients received cryotherapy every 2 weeks until complete wart resolution or a maximum of six sessions. Wart diameter, total number of warts and adverse effects were documented. Complete clearance of treated warts was achieved in 13(86.7%) and 11(73.3%) of patients with immunotherapy and cryotherapy respectively. Immunotherapy showed greater wart size reduction (51.88 ± 89.36 mm) than cryotherapy (32.99 ± 36.19 mm), (p = 0.46).     A keloid represents an excessive overgrowth of skin beyond the boundaries of an injury. Earlobe keloids usually follow ear piercing and can become large, sometimes producing remarkable disfigurement. Surgical excision, pressure dressing, intralesional corticosteroid injection, cryosurgery, radiation, and lasers have all been used to treat earlobe keloids. However, none has produced uniformly satisfactory results. Combinations of more than one modality have also been employed to yield successful outcomes. We describe cryotherapy as a single modality to treat seven-year-old, multiple earlobe keloids. Three cryotherapy sessions with two freezing-thawing cycles of 30-40 seconds' freezing time and two minutes' thawing time, undertaken one month apart, resulted in complete flatness of the keloids and no recurrence after 5 years. We also evaluate keloid-related and operational factors that determine the success of cryotherapy as a monotherapy for earlobe keloids.

    Six of 16 patients presenting to the University Hospital Kuala Lumpur with unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis were treated with teflon injection of the paralysed vocal cord. The results are presented and the role of surgical therapy, in particular teflon injection is reviewed.

    A 14-yr-old male puma (Puma concolor) was presented to the veterinary staff of the National Zoo in Malaysia for an auricular mass. Squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed by histologic examination of a biopsy. Systemic administration of chemotherapy using vincristine (0.5 mg/m2 i.v. q. 7 days for six treatments) and prednisolone (2 mg/kg i.m. q. 72 hr x 7 days) caused side effects of vomiting, weight loss, and alopecia and did not improve the size or appearance of the tumor. Intralesional vincristine injections (0.2 mg q. 7 days for two treatments) and prednisolone (2 mg/kg i.m. q. 72 hr x 15 days) were administered, resulting in complete tumor regression after 14 days of treatment.

    We report our experience with intralesional injection of bleomycin in the treatment of neck lymphangioma. From May 1995 to April 1998, 11 patients aged between 6 to 22 months were treated with intralesional bleomycin injection. Ultrasonography and computed tomography were used to assess and select the cases suitable for sclerotherapy. Patients with lesions encasing the internal jugular vein and the carotid artery were chosen. With the patient under sedation and using ultrasound guidance, the cysts were aspirated and bleomycin was injected at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg body weight. The number of procedures varied from 1 to 4 over a period of 8 months to 1 year. Patients were initially followed-up 3 monthly, then 6 monthly and subsequently yearly. In 4 patients, the neck mass was no longer visible (excellent response). In 5 patients, the neck mass had reduced to a size (more than 50% reduction) that was cosmetically acceptable (good response). There were 2 failures (poor response). There were no complications. Our results suggest that intralesional injection of bleomycin can be effectively used to treat selected cases of neck lymphangiomas.

    OBJECTIVES: To evaluate effect of ice-cream stick exercise regimen with or without a mouth-exercising device (MED) on mucosal burning sensation in oral submucous fibrosis.

    STUDY DESIGN: In total, 282 patients with oral submucous fibrosis were treated with topical corticosteroid and oral antioxidant and the ice-cream stick exercise regimen. Patients in subgroups A1, A2, and A3 were additionally given a new MED. Patients in subgroups A1 and B1 patients with interincisal distance (IID) of 20 to 35 mm were managed without any additional therapy; patients in subgroups A2 and B2 with IID of 20 to 35 mm were additionally managed with intralesional injections; and those in subgroups A3 and B3 with IID less than 20 mm were managed surgically. Subjective evaluation of decrease in the oral mucosal burning was measured on a visual analogue scale (VAS). Analysis of variance and Tukey's multiple post hoc analysis were carried out to present the results.

    RESULTS: Patients using the MED, that is, subgroups A1, A2, and A3, showed reduction in burning sensation in the range of 64.8% to 71.1% and 27.8% to 30.9%, whereas in subgroups B1, B2, and B3, reduction in burning sensation ranged from 64.7% to 69.9% and from 29.3% to 38.6% after 6 months. The wo-way analysis of variance indicated statistically significant results in changes in initial VAS scores to 6-monthly VAS scores between MED users and non-MED users.

    CONCLUSIONS: The MED helps to enhance the rate of reduction of mucosal burning sensation, in addition to the conventional ice-cream stick regimen, as an adjunct to local and surgical treatment.

    The response of chronic plantar fasciitis to any treatment is unpredictable. Autologous blood might provide cellular and humoral mediators to induce healing in areas of degeneration, the underlying pathology in plantar fasciitis. This study compared the efficacy of intralesional autologous blood with corticosteroid injection for plantar fasciitis present for more than 6 weeks.

    Background: Angiogenic activity has been considered to reflect important molecular events during breast tumour
    development. The present study concerned cellular and molecular changes of MNU-induced breast tumours subjected
    to promotion and suppression of angiogenesis. Methods: Female Sprague Dawley rats at the age of 21 days received
    MNU at the dose 70 mg/kg of body weight by intraperitoneal injection. Three months post-carcinogen initiation,
    mammary tumours were palpated and their growth was monitored. When the tumour diameter reached 1.0 ± 0.05 cm,
    rats were given bFGF or PF4 intratumourally at a dose of 10 μg/tumour. Entire palpable tumour were subsequently
    excised and subjected to histology examination, IHC staining, and RT-PCR. Results: No critical morphological changes
    were observed between pro-angiogenic factor, bFGF, and control groups. However, increase of tumour size with more
    necrotic and diffuse areas was notable in tumours after anti-angiogenic PF4 intervention. ER and PR mRNA expression
    was significantly up- and down-regulated in bFGF and PF4 groups, respectively. The trends were significantly associated
    with peri- and intratumoural MVD counts. However, irrespective of whether we promoted or inhibited angiogenesis,
    the expression of EGFR and ERBB2 continued to be significantly increased but this was not significantly associated
    with the MVD score. No significant differences in E-cadherin and LR gene expression were noted between intervention
    and control groups. Conclusion: ER and PR receptor expression shows consistent responses when tumour angiogenesis
    is manipulated either positively or negatively. Our study adds to current understanding that not only do we need to
    target hormonal receptors, as presently practiced, but we also need to target endothelial receptors to successfully treat
    breast cancer.
