    Preservative fruits have gained popularity in recent years as part of food consumption, but their benefits towards human health are not known. This study compared total phenolic (TPC), total flavonoid (TFC), β-carotene, lycopene, ascorbic acid (AA) contents and antioxidant properties between fresh and pickled papaya. The results indicated that mean TPC (mg gallic acid equivalent/100 g dry samples), TFC (mg rutin equivalent/100 g dry samples), β-carotene (µg/100 g edible portions), lycopene (µg/100 g edible portions) and AA content (mg/100 g edible portions) were higher in fresh papaya (141.66 ± 11.71; 57.80 ± 2.11; 793.83 ± 5.47; 779.69 ± 5.55; 70.37 ± 0.65) as compared to pickled form. Antioxidant activity (%) measured by DPPH and β-Carotene-Linoleate bleaching method was higher in fresh papaya (56.83 ± 4.68; 77.56 ± 1.40). Total phenolic, total flavonoid, ascorbic acid, beta carotene and lycopene were strongly correlated with antioxidant activity and scavenging activity (0.905 ≤ r ≤ 1.00) indicating that were important contributors to antioxidant properties in papaya extracts.     Plant disease control has traditionally relied heavily on the use of agrochemicals despite their potentially negative impact on the environment. An alternative strategy is that of induced resistance (IR). However, while IR has proven effective in controlled environments, it has shown variable field efficacy, thus raising questions about its potential for disease management in a given crop. Mathematical modelling of IR assists researchers with understanding the dynamics of the phenomenon in a given plant cohort against a selected disease-causing pathogen. Here, a prototype mathematical model of IR promoted by a chemical elicitor is proposed and analysed. Standard epidemiological models describe that, under appropriate environmental conditions, Susceptible plants (S) may become Diseased (D) upon exposure to a compatible pathogen or are able to Resist the infection (R) via basal host defence mechanisms. The application of an elicitor enhances the basal defence response thereby affecting the relative proportion of plants in each of the S, R and D compartments. IR is a transient response and is modelled using reversible processes to describe the temporal evolution of the compartments. Over time, plants can move between these compartments. For example, a plant in the R-compartment can move into the S-compartment and can then become diseased. Once in the D-compartment, however, it is assumed that there is no recovery. The terms in the equations are identified using established principles governing disease transmission and this introduces parameters which are determined by matching data to the model using computer-based algorithms. These then give the best match of the model with experimental data. The model predicts the relative proportion of plants in each compartment and quantitatively estimates elicitor effectiveness. An illustrative case study will be given; however, the model is generic and will be applicable for a range of plant-pathogen-elicitor scenarios.

    Gorham disease (GD) is an extremely rare disorder that is characterised by massive osteolysis of the affected bone with unknown aetiology and an unpredictable prognosis. Additionally, no standard treatment is available for GD. This article describes a case report of a 61-year-old Malay woman who was diagnosed with GD of the anterior mandible without a prior history of trauma. She presented with pain and mobility of the dentoalveolar segment for 3 months. The radiographic findings showed "floating teeth" with widening of the periodontal ligament space and localized area of bony destruction. Histopathologically, there was proliferation of numerous dilated endothelial-lined channels within the intertrabecular tissue. Some areas of bone were replaced by fibrous connective tissue giving rise to the appearance of a benign fibroosseous lesion. The patient was managed with simple removal of the affected bone segment under local anaesthesia, followed by prosthodontic rehabilitation. Healing of the surgical site was uneventful, and no recurrence was reported at the 3-year follow-up.

    AIM: This study aimed to assess the quality and readability of the available health information on the net regarding denture hygiene.

    MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three search engines (Google, Yahoo!, and Bing) were searched. The first 20 consecutive websites from each engine were obtained and checked for eligibility. For the quality of the websites, the Health on the Net Foundation Code of Conduct (HONcode), the DISCERN tool, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Benchmarks, and Google PageRank were used for the assessment of the included websites. For readability, an online web tool was used, including well-known analyzing indices [Flesch Kincaid grade level (FKGL), Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG), and Flesch Reading Ease (FRE)]. The acceptable readability level was set to be ≥80.0 for the FRE and <7 for the FKGL and SMOG. The data were presented in frequencies and percentages.

    RESULTS: Out of the 60 screened websites, 14 websites were eligible for analysis. There was only one (7.1%) website that had the HONcode seal. The mean score of all websites based on the DISCERN tool was 29.6 ± 12.1, with no website achieved the high score (≥65). Only one (7.1%) website scored >5 based on Google PageRank. Regarding JAMA benchmarks, all websites achieved a mean score of 2.57 ± 1.1. The mean grade level based on the FKGL was 8.4 ± 6.3. All websites had a score of <7 according to the SMOG index. The mean score of the readability ease index was 90.5 ± 16.4.

    CONCLUSION: Most of the dental health information on denture hygiene available on the Arabic websites did not have the required level of quality, regardless of being readable and comprehensible by most of the general people.

    CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Directing the patients to the appropriate websites related to their cases is the responsibility of the dentists.

    White pepper is the dried seeds obtained from pepper berries (Piper nigrum L.) after the removal of the pericarp. It has been widely used as seasoning and condiments in food preparation. Globally, white pepper fetches a higher price compared to black pepper due to its lighter colour, preferable milder flavour and pungency. Increasing global demand of the spice outpaced the supply as the conventional production method used is laborious, lengthy and also not very hygienic. The most common conventional method is water retting but can also include pit soil, chemical, boiling, steaming and mechanical methods. The introduction of a biotechnological approach has gained a lot of interest, as it is a more rapid, convenient and hygienic method of producing white pepper. This technique involves the application of microorganisms and/or enzymes. This review highlights both conventional and latest biotechnological processes of white pepper production. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

    Aim: Chemoresistance in colorectal cancer (CRC) has become a burden in treating the disease effectively. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a type of noncoding RNA that were found to be important in cellular homeostasis. The involvement of circRNAs in relation to chemoresistance in other types of cancers has also been reported. This study aims to identify the differentially expressed circRNAs between chemoresistant and chemosensitive CRC cells. Materials & methods: We developed a chemoresistant cell line model and profiled the circRNAs via microarray. We further validated the expression of two circRNAs in 25 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue specimens (13 nonresponders and 12 responders) via quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR).  Results & conclusion: We found that there were 773 upregulated and 732 downregulated circRNAs between the chemoresistant and chemosensitive HCT-116 cells. We found that hsa_circ_32883 could be a promising biotarget.

    INTRODUCTION: In this contribution, a series of alkoxy substituted chalcones were successfully designed, synthesized, spectroscopically characterized and evaluated for their cytotoxicity potential in inhibiting the growth of MCF-7 cells.

    OBJECTIVE: In order to investigate the influence between electron density in conjugated π-systems and biological activities, different withdrawing substituents, namely Nitro (NO2), Cyano (C≡N) and trifluoromethyl (CF3) were introduced in the chalcone-based molecular system.

    METHODS: All the derivatives were then tested on MCF-7 cell line using the fluorescence microscopy-based cytotoxicity analyses.

    RESULTS: The preliminary findings showed that both -NO2 and -CF3 substituents revealed their potential to inhibit the growth of MCF-7 with IC;50 values of 14.75 and 13.75 μg/ml, respectively. In addition, the morphological changes of MCF-7 cells were observed in response to alkoxy substituted chalcone treatment through an induction of apoptosis pathway with cell blebbing, phosphatidylserine exposure and autophagic activity with acidification of lysosomal structure. Intermolecular interaction based on in silico investigation on nitro, trifluoromethyl and cyano based chalcones exhibited several types of interactions with tumor necrosis factor receptor (PDB: 1EXT) protein and high hydrogen bond in the molecule-receptor interaction have given significant impact towards their toxicity on MCF-7 cells.

    CONCLUSION: Significantly, these types of chalcones exhibited ideal and high potential to be further developed as anti-cancer agents.

    Present study concerns the radiological character of Malaysian honey. A total of 18 samples (representative of the various most common types) were obtained from various honey bee farms throughout the country. Using a high-purity germanium γ-ray spectroscopic system, the samples were analysed for the naturally occurring radionuclides 226Ra, 228Ra and 40K. The respective range of activities (in Bq/kg) was: 3.49 ± 0.35 to 4.51 ± 0.39, 0.99 ± 0.37 to 1.74 ± 0.39 and 41.37 ± 3.26 to 105.02 ± 6.91. The estimated associated committed effective doses were derived from prevailing data on national consumption of honey, the annual dose being found low compared with the UNSCEAR reference dose limit of 290 μSv y-1. The estimated threshold consumption rate for honey indicates a maximum intake of 339 g/d, which poses an insignificant radiological risk to public health; however, the total dietary exposure may not, the guidance level of 290 μSv y-1 being applicable to dietary intake of all foodstuffs. The study is in support of the cultivation of a healthy lifestyle, acknowledging prevailing radioactivity within the environment.

    Colorectal cancer is the third commonest malignancy in Asia including Malaysia. The immunogenic cancer-testis antigens, which are expressed in a variety of cancers but with limited expression in normal tissues except the testis, represent an attractive approach to improve treatment options for colorectal cancer. We aimed to validate four PASD1 peptides as the immunotherapeutic targets in colorectal cancer. First, PASD1 mRNA and protein expression were determined via real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry. The PASD1 peptides specific to HLA-A*24:02 were investigated using IFN-y-ELISpot assay, followed by the cytolytic and granzyme-B-ELISpot assays to analyze the cytolytic effects of CD8+ T cells. Gene and protein expressions of PASD1 were detected in 20% and 17.3% of colorectal cancer samples, respectively. PASD1(4) peptide was shown to be immunogenic in colorectal cancer samples. CD8+ T cells raised against PASD1(4) peptide were able to lyze HLA-A*24:02+ PASD1+ cells. Our results reveal that PASD1(4) peptide represents a potential target for colorectal cancer.
