    Nutrition has been widely recognized to have certain levels of influence on the risk of kidney stone formation. Thus,
    this case-control study was conducted to determine the association of dietary intake and lifestyles factors with kidney
    stone disease. Sociodemographic data, dietary intake, supplements intake, smoking and alcohol habit, medical history,
    physical activity and anthropometric data were obtained using interviewer-administered pre-tested questionnaires
    among 81 patients who had been diagnosed with kidney stone disease and 81 patients without kidney stone disease at
    Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre. The results indicated that body mass index and hip circumference
    were higher among cases as compared to controls in both men and women (p < 0.05). Energy, macronutrients and
    micronutrients intake were higher for case subjects compared to control subjects for all significant parameters (p < 0.05).
    Results showed positive association of kidney stone with consumption of nuts (≥1 time/week) for men and women while
    consumption of eggs (1-3 times/month) and beans (1-6 times/week) showed positive association for women. Analysis
    of multivariate found the risk factor among women was diabetes mellitus [Adjusted OR = 27.6 (95% CI = 1.43-53.3)]
    (p < 0.05). Whilst, plain water intake of at least 6 glasses [Adjusted OR = 0.001 (95% CI = 0.000-0.08)] (p < 0.05) and
    8 glasses per day [Adjusted OR = 0.001 (95% CI = 0.000-0.02)] (p < 0.05) reduced the risk among women. The risk
    factors for men were smoking habits [Adjusted OR = 16.2 (95% CI = 1.29-203)] (p < 0.05), consumption of carbonated
    drink 1-3 times per month [Adjusted OR = 6.25 (95% CI = 1.04-40.7)] (p < 0.05) and 1-6 times per week [Adjusted OR =
    12.5 (95% CI = 1.41-111)] (p < 0.05). Unhealthy dietary and lifestyles factors increased the risk of kidney stone disease
    and various risk factors were found for different sexes.

    Propolis is a sticky substance produced by stingless bees for construction and defence of their hive. It has notable anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-hyperglycemic, and wound healing effects. The present review summarised and examined the phytochemical properties, mode of action and current research prospects of Malaysian propolis. A database search using Google Scholar, Web of Science and ScienceDirect generated 780 references; 30 relevant articles were included in the present review, of which 23 were in vitro studies and 7 were in vivo or animal studies. Propolis demonstrated antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and anti-hyperglycemic properties, indicating potential as a wound healing agent. Despite favourable findings, due to the scarcity of studies in the literature, more in-depth research and clinical validation on the synergistic effects, efficacy and optimum dosage of propolis are needed.

    This study aimed to determine the antioxidant and hepatoprotective activities of semi-purified aqueous partition obtained from the methanol extract of Dicranopteris linearis (AQDL) leaves against paracetamol (PCM)-induced liver intoxication in rats. The test solutions, AQDL (50, 250, and 500 mg/kg), were administered orally to rats (n = 6) once daily for seven consecutive days followed by the hepatotoxicity induction using 3 g/kg PCM (p.o.). Blood was collected for serum biochemical parameters analysis while the liver was collected for histopathological examination and endogenous antioxidant enzymes analysis. AQDL was also subjected to antioxidant determination and phytochemical analysis. Results obtained show that AQDL possessed high total phenolic content (TPC) value and remarkable radical scavenging activities. AQDL also significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the liver weight/body weight (LW/BW) ratio or serum level of ALT, AST, and total bilirubin while significantly (p < 0.05) increase the level of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) without affecting the malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver indicating its hepatoprotective effect. Phytoconstituents analyses showed only the presence of saponins and triterpenes, but lack of flavonoids. In conclusion, AQDL exerts hepatoprotective activity via its high antioxidant potential and ability to modulate the endogenous enzymatic antioxidant defense system possibly via the synergistic action of saponins and triterpenes.

    Methanol extract ofMuntingia calaburaL. (family Muntingiaceae) leaf has been reported to exert various pharmacological activities including hepatoprotection. The present study was carried out to identify the most effective hepatoprotective partition derived from the extract and to determine the mechanisms of action involved. The extract was partitioned using solvents with different polarity to yield petroleum ether (PEMC), ethyl acetate (EAMC), and aqueous (AQMC) extracts. Each extract, at 250 mg/kg, was subjected to the paracetamol (PCM)-induced hepatotoxic assay and several parameters such as liver weight, liver/body weight ratio, serum liver enzymes' level, and histopathological examinations were determined. Each partition was also tested for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potentials. The most effective extract (AQMC) was prepared in additional dose of 50 and 500 mg/kg, and then subjected to the same liver toxicity test in addition to the endogenous antioxidant enzymes assay. Moreover, AQMC was also subjected to the phytochemical screening and HPLC analysis. Overall, from the results obtained: AQMC exerted significant (p< 0.05): (i) antioxidant activity when assessed using the DPPH, SOD and ORAC assays with high TPC detected; (ii) anti-inflammatory activity via LOX, but not XO pathway; (iii) hepatoprotective activity indicated by its ability to reverse the effect of PCM on the liver weight and liver/body weight ratio, the level of serum liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and ALP), and activity of several endogenous antioxidant enzymes (SOD and CAT). Phytochemicals analyses demonstrated the presence of several flavonoid-based bioactive compounds such as gallic acid and quercetin, which were reported to possess hepatoprotective activity. In conclusion, AQMC exerts hepatoprotective activity against the PCM-induced toxicity possibly by having a remarkable antioxidant potential and ability to activate the endogenous antioxidant system possibly via the synergistic action of its phytoconstituents.

    BACKGROUND: In recent years, the potential role of probiotics has become prominent in the discoveries of neurotherapy against neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) exhibit neuroprotective properties and exert their effects via various mechanisms of actions. This review aimed to evaluate the effects of LAB on neuroprotection reported in the literature.

    METHODS: A database search on Google Scholar, PubMed, and Science Direct revealed a total of 467 references, of which 25 were included in this review based on inclusion criteria which comprises 7 in vitro, 16 in vivo, and 2 clinical studies.

    RESULTS: From the studies, LAB treatment alone or in probiotics formulations demonstrated significant neuroprotective activities. In animals and humans, LAB probiotics supplementation has improved memory and cognitive performance mainly via antioxidant and anti-inflammatory pathways.

    CONCLUSIONS: Despite promising findings, due to limited studies available in the literature, further studies still need to be explored regarding synergistic effects, efficacy, and optimum dosage of LAB oral bacteriotherapy as treatment or prevention against neurodegenerative diseases.

    Four previously undescribed alkaloids, aspergillinine A-D, and four known diterpene pyrones were isolated from the potato dextrose agar (PDA) culture of Aspergillus sp. HAB10R12. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on a detailed analysis of their NMR and MS data. The absolute configuration of the isolated compounds was determined by Electronic Circular Dichroism analysis coupled with computational methods. Aspergillinine A represents the first example of a diketopiperazine dipeptide containing the unnatural amino acid N-methyl kynurenine. Its absolute configuration revealed that it adopts a rather unusual conformation. Aspergillinine B represents a previously unencountered skeleton containing an isoindolinone ring. Aspergillinine C and D were similar to previously isolated diketopiperazine alkaloids, namely, lumpidin and brevianamide F, respectively. The diterpene pyrones were isolated twice previously, once from a soil-derived Aspergillus species, and once from the liquid culture of Aspergillus sp. HAB10R12. The alkaloids isolated in this study showed no antiproliferative activity when tested against HepG2 and A549 cancer cell lines.

    The combination of hydroxyapatite and the herbal extract ellagic acid is expected to accelerate the bone healing process (osteogenesis) due to the extract's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The osteogenesis process is closely associated with angiogenesis markers, such as fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and alkali phosphatase (ALP). The objective of this study is to analyse the combination of ellagic acid and hydroxyapatite to promote FGF-2, VEGF and ALP expression as angiogenesis markers in a bone defect model. The research sample comprised 30 male Wistar rats with a defect introduced on the left femur; these were divided into three groups for treatment with ellagic acid and hydroxyapatite, hydroxyapatite and polyethylene glycol (PEG) (control). On days 7 and 14 days after treatment, the Wistar rats were euthanised, and the femoral bone tissue was removed for the immunohistochemical analysis of FGF-2, VEGF and ALP expression.
