    The electrooxidation of propionaldehyde and butyraldehyde on a gold electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry in alkaline media. Electrooxidation of both aldehydes showed the appearance of two anodic peaks. Another oxidation peak on a newly generated electrode surface was observed after the corresponding reduction peak for both aldehydes.

    Elektrod komposit dwilogam yang disediakan hasil campuran serbuk argentums (Ag) dan 'carbon (C) (dinamakan AgC-Pvc) memberikan hasil elektrolisis larutan pewarna C. I. Reactive Orange 4 (R04) yang tidak berwarna dan tanpa penghasilan enapan lumpur berbanding elektrod komposit dwilogam lain. Perbezaan nisbah komposisi serbuk Ag:C (30:70, 50:50 and 70:30) dalam penyediaan elektrod seterusnya diuji untuk melihat kesan perbezaan komposisi ini terhadap penyahwarnaan R04. Melalui persamaan Tafel yang diperoleh, elektrod Ag285C 665-PVC 5 yang menggunakan komposisi 30% Ag dan 70% C memberikan nilai perubahan ketumpatan arus, io yang lebih tinggi iaitu 3.555 mAl cm2 berbanding elektrod lain. Elektrod ini mempunyai aktiviti pemangkinan elektrokimia yang lebih baik berbanding elektrod lain. Hasil proses elektrolisis elektrod Ag285C66.5-PVC 5 terhadap larutan RO4 telah dianalisis menggunakan spektrofotometer uv-Nampak dan didapati proses degredasi kumpulan azo dalam pewarna tersebut telah berlaku selepas proses elektrolisis yang menghasilkan larutan tidak berwarna.

    Elektrod platinum-polivinilklorida (Pt-PVC) untuk pengoksidaan elektrokimia etanol dalam larutan alkali telah direkabentuk. Elektrod Pt-PVC dibina dengan mencampurkan serbuk-serbuk logam platinum dengan PVC (95:5 w/w), diaduk untuk mendapatkan campuran yang homogen, ditambahkan dengan tetrahidrofuran (THF) untuk melarutkan PVC, dikeringkan, dimasukkan ke dalam acuan berdiameter 1 cm dan ditekan pada tekanan kira-kira 10 tan/cm2. Kajian elektrokimia dilakukan menggunakan voltammetri kitaran (CV) dan kronokoulometri (CC). CV untuk etanol yang menggunakan elektrod-elektrod kepingan logam Pt dan Pt-PVC masing-masing memberikan ketumpatan arus 0.25 mA/cm2 dan 85 mA/cm2 untuk puncak penjerapan hidroksida. Ini menunjukkan bahawa elektrod Pt-PVC mempunyai nilai konduktiviti dan perilaku elektrokimia yang lebih baik untuk pengoksidaan etanol dalam KOH berbanding elektrod kepingan logam Pt. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa terdapat peningkatan peratus hasil elektrolisis dari 3.64% kepada 23.64% asid asetik apabila elektrod Pt-PVC digunakan untuk pengoksidaan elektrokimia 0.25 M etanol dalam larutan elektrolit 1.0 M KOH menggantikan elektrod kepingan logam Pt.

    Biomass burning is one of the main sources of air pollution in South East Asia, predominantly during the dry period between June and October each year. Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia, have been identified as the regions connected to biomass burning due to their involvement in agricultural activities. In Sumatra, the Province of Riau has always been found to have had the highest number of hotspots during haze episodes. This study aims to determine the concentration of five major pollutants (PM10, SO2, NO2, CO and O3) in Riau, Indonesia, for 2006 and 2007. It will also correlate the level of air pollutants to the number of hotspots recorded, using the hotspot information system introduced by the Malaysian Centre for Remote Sensing (MACRES). Overall, the concentration of air pollutants recorded was found to increase with the number of hotspots. Nevertheless, only the concentration of PM10 during a haze episode is significantly different when compared to its concentration in non-haze conditions. In fact, in August 2006, when the highest number of hotspots was recorded the concentration of PM10 was found to increase by more than 20% from its normal concentration. The dispersion pattern, as simulated by the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory Model (HYSPLIT), showed that the distribution of PM10 was greatly influenced by the wind direction. Furthermore, the particles had the capacity to reach the Peninsular Malaysia within 42 hours of emission from the point sources as a consequence of the South West monsoon.

    Mangan oksida (MnO2
    ) poros nano yang mempunyai morfologi lapisan nipis telah disintesis dan diaplikasikan sebagai
    penjerap pewarna sintetik komersial (remazol merah, eriokrom hitam dan metilena biru). Permukaan bahan silika
    alumina yang telah diubah suai dengan 3-aminopropiltrietoksisilana (APTES) digunakan dalam proses sonokimia pada
    suhu bilik dengan kehadiran 0.1 M kalium permanganat (KMnO4
    ) untuk menghasilkan komposit silika alumina-MnO2

    Penyingkiran templat dijalankan untuk mendapatkan MnO2
    tulen bersaiz nano. Spektrum FTIR menunjukkan kehadiran
    getaran MnO2
    dalam julat 400 - 600 cm-1 dan corak XRD menunjukkan kehadiran birnesit jenis MnO2

    lapisan nipis yang diperoleh menunjukkan kebolehan menjerap
    pewarna eriokrom hitam dan metilena biru masing-masingnya sehingga 54% dan 99% serta kapasiti penjerapan masingmasing
    ialah 0.0024 dan 0.0077 mmol/g. Kedua-dua isoterma penjerapan eriokrom hitam dan metilena biru oleh MnO2
    masing-masing menepati ciri-ciri Langmuir dan Temkin. Sementara itu data kinetik penjerapan eriokrom hitam dan
    metilena biru kedua-duanya memenuhi tertib pertama pseudo.

    Surfactants in the atmosphere may act as cloud condensation nuclei, with a potentially negative impact on the global climate. Therefore, accurate determination of surfactants is crucial in order to investigate the possible effects of surfactants on the atmosphere. The aim of this study was to identify the optimum sampling method for measuring the maximum quantity of surfactants present in ambient air. Air samples were collected using a range of air sampling pumps that were made to vary in terms of flow rate, storage period, type of absorbing solution and the characteristics of the impinger tube. Samples obtained were analysed by colourimetry for anionic and cationic surfactants as methylene blue-active substances (MBAS) and disulphine blue-active substances (DBAS), respectively. Absorbance was measured at 650 nm for MBAS and 628 nm for DBAS using UV-visible spectrophotometer. We found that the optimum sampling method consisted of an absorbent solution (deionised water, buffer solution and methylene blue/disulphine blue solution) with the flow rate of 1.0 L/min. The concentration of surfactants in all sampling methods remained constant regardless of the storage period (1 day and 4 days), indicating that surfactants in the absorbing solution are quite stable. Covering the impinger tube was shown to influence the amount of both anionic and cationic surfactants detected.

    In this study, two nickel based electrodes were prepared; nickel foil and nickel-polyvinylchloride (Ni-PVC), in order to study their electrochemical behavior using cyclic voltammetry, CV and chronocoulometry, CC. Ni electrode was prepared from Ni metal foil while Ni-PVC electrode was prepared by mixing a weighed portion of Ni powder and PVC in THF solvent, swirled until the suspension was homogeneous and drying the suspension in an oven at 50oC for 3 h. The dry sample was then placed in a 1 cm diameter stainless steel mould and pressed at 10 ton/cm2. From CV data, Ni-PVC electrode showed a better electrochemical behavior compared to Ni metal foil electrode. The use of Ni-PVC electrode at higher concentration of supporting electrolyte (1.0 M KOH) was better than at lower concentration of the same supporting electrolyte in electroxidation of ethanol. In addition to acetic acid, the oxidation of ethanol also produced ethyl acetate and acetaldehyde.

    The big challenge for the detection of pharmaceutical residues in water samples is the type of ionization mode in
    terms of positive or negative ionization which plays an important role to identify and quantify the analytes using liquid
    chromatography/mass spectrometry. An analytical method was applied to analysis of gliclazide (diabetic drug) in surface
    water and wastewater from sewage treatment plants and hospitals. The proposed analytical method allows simultaneous
    isolation and concentration procedure using solid phase extraction (Oasis HLB) prior to separation using high-performance
    liquid chromatography. The detection and confirmation was achieved by applying time-of-flight analyzer. The limits of
    quantification were as low as 1.4 ng/L (deionized water), 4 ng/L (surface water), 27 ng/L (hospital influent), 10 ng/L
    (hospital effluent), 6 ng/L (sewage treatment plant effluent) and 21 ng/L (sewage treatment plant influent), respectively. On
    average, good recoveries of higher than 87% were obtained for gliclazide in the studied samples. The proposed method
    successfully determined and quantified gliclazide in surface water and wastewater. The results showed that gliclazide
    is a persistent compound in sewage treatment effluents as well as in the recipient rivers. Gliclazide was detected in all
    samples and the highest concentration was 130 ng/L in influent of sewage treatment plant.
