Taman Negara is a famous tourism destination for nature lover in Malaysia. The area is well kept from human activities and disturbances. Since there is no data for human exposure to natural radiation, there is a need to do this study. It will give a baseline data for surface dose and radionuclide concentrations and one can estimate the external hazards index for the visitor to this unexplored area, i.e. UiTM-Perhilitan research station, Kuala Keniam, Taman Negara, Malaysia. The surface dose rate measurements were done in-situ using portable radiation survey meter at the surface and 1 m above the surface. The top soil samples were taken using hand auger up to 15 cm depth at nine locations around research station. Samples were brought back to the UiTM laboratory in Shah Alam, dried, ground to powder form, and sieved using 250 μm sieve. Then the uranium and thorium concentrations were analyzed using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF).The mean value for surface dose rates on surface were 0.164 μSv/hr while the mean value for surface dose rates on 1m above the surface were 0.161 μSv/hr. The mean concentration of thorium was 2.62μg/g while the mean concentration of uranium was 0.61μg/g.

Aktiviti fizikal berkait rapat dengan tahap kecergasan fizikal seseorang. Aktiviti fizikal adalah pergerakan badan yang dihasilkan oleh rangka otot yang akan mengakibatkan pengeluaran tenaga. Kualiti kehidupan bagi rakyat di Malaysia dipercayai akan memberi kesan terhadap pertumbuhan pembangunan fizikal di sesebuah tempat tersebut. Kawasan bandar ialah kawasan yang diwartakan serta kawasan tepu bina yang bersempadan dengannya dan gabungan kedua-dua kawasan ini mempunyai penduduk seramai 10,000 orang atau lebih semasa Banci Penduduk dan Perumahan 2000. Kawasan selainnya yang diwartakan dan mempunyai jumlah penduduk kurang daripada 10,000 orang serta kawasan yang tidak diwartakan, dikelaskan sebagai luar bandar. Perbezaan kawasan tempat tinggal di kawasan yang dibezakan oleh saiz penduduk boleh dikaitkan dengan perbezaan dalam tabiat makan, akses untuk ke tempat kemudahan sukan dan peluang untuk aktiviti fizikal, dan lain-lain lagi. Pendedahan-pendedahan ini terhadap alam sekitar juga mungkin menentukan gaya kehidupan serta risiko terhadap kardiovaskular dan ia mungkin dikaitkan dengan tahap kecergasan. Justeru, kajian ulasan ini dijalankan untuk mengenalpasti faktor yang mempengaruhi tahap kecergasan dalam kalangan remaja dan kanak-kanak di kawasan bandar dan luar bandar.
This study reported the differences in factor structure of the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) among Jordanian Arab and Malaysian Muslim participants and further examined its validity and reliability. A convenience sample of 553 Jordanian Arab and 183 Malaysian Malay Muslim university students was recruited from governmental universities in northern Jordan. The findings of this study revealed that this scale consists of two factors for the Jordanian Arab group, representing the "Religious Well-Being" and the "Existential Well-Being" subscales, and consists of three factors for the Malaysian group, representing the "Affiliation/Meaning and Purpose," "Positive Existential Well-Being/God Caring and Love," and "Alienation/Despair" subscales. In conclusion, the factor structure of the SWBS for both groups in this study was psychometrically sound with evidence of acceptable to good validity and reliability. Furthermore, this study supported the multidimensional nature of the SWBS and the earlier notion that ethnicity shapes responses to this scale.
Environmental radiation protection program is important in the effort to limit radiation dose to the public to be as low as reasonably achievable. As water is an important factor of transfer of radionuclide to human, therefore it is important to measure natural radionuclide concentrations in rivers. 20 water samples were collected randomly from the main rivers in Kota Tinggi district. The water samples collected were analysed using ICP-MS technique to determine uranium, thorium and potassium concentration in river water. Radionuclide concentrations obtained were compared with the terrestrial gamma radiation dose rate measured in the area. Significance of the results obtained is discussed.
The present project investigated the potential of utilizing corncobs and sugar cane waste as viscosivier in drilling fluid. For this purpose, the synthetic-based drilling fluid, Sarapar 147, was used as the base fluid. Both the materials were subjected to pre-treatment of drying, dehumidifying, grinding and sieving process prior to rheological tests. The rheological tests were conducted in accordance with the API 13B specifications to measure mud density, plastic viscosity, yield point, 10-second and 10-minute gel strength. The study found that plastic viscosity and yield point had a direct relationship with the amount of materials added. To drill fluid additive with corn cobs, the density, plastic viscosity and yield point were increased when the amount of additives were increased. Based on these experiments, both additives were found to have the potential to be used as additive in drilling fluid. In particular, they were able to improve its rheological properties by increasing the density, plastic viscosity and yield point. The suitable concentration for the corn cobs and sugar cane is 6.45 lb/bbl and 9.43 lb/bbl, respectively.
Objective: Mental health is often stigmatized in Asia, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is portrayed negatively in the media. The objective of this short report is to obtain an insight on Asian countries’ perception on Electroconvulsive Therapy, mainly through the media.
Methods: Several online movie databases were searched, with emphasis on Asian movies’ portrayal of Electroconvulsive Therapy.
Results: Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) was portrayed in 9 television programme, 4 in films and 2 on Youtube. All patients (15) had no proper information given on possible side effects and consent not taken in all of them. 5 patients (33%) were tortured via ECT, 3(20%) of them had, ECT for Schizophrenia. In all scenes (15/15, 100%) ECT were given without general anaesthesia and the patients were fully awake. Basic monitoring (2/15, 13%) was performed, and all patients had no oxygenation. Tonic Clonic seizures were visible because all patients received no muscle relaxant. Bilateral electrode's placements (13/15, 87%) were common. One (6.6%) patient had a trilateral electrode placement. Most patients (9/15, 60%) received one shock, 4 patients (27%) received 2 shocks. One patient (6.6%) received 3 and 1 patient (6.6%) 4 shocks. 100% of patients were in obvious discomfort and ECT was portrayed as barbaric. There was no death depicted post ECT.
Conclusion: ECT is under portrayed in the Asian media. Only the Indian and Pakistani medium broached the subject. In the majority of the scenes, ECT was portrayed
negatively. This shows a total lack of knowledge of ECT among the Asian population. Alarmingly, ECT was used as a torture device in 5 mediums. This only adds to the stigma of ECT in Asia. More needs to be done to correct the misconceptions of ECT in Asia.
This paper details a study conducted to evaluate the performance of cold in-place recycling (CIPR) using polymer modified asphalt emulsion (PMAE). The asphalt emulsion was modified using natural rubber latex (NRL). Four proportions of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) which are 0%, 25%, 50% and 75% were mixed with natural aggregates and modified asphalt emulsion using natural rubber latex (NRL). The results showed that the optimum modified asphalt emulsion for each proportion of RAP decreased due to the increase in RAP content. Results obtained from Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS) and Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) test for the mixes complied with the requirements of the Road Engineering Association of Malaysia (REAM) specifications. The unsoaked and soaked ITS values obtained were 0.2 MPa and 0.15 MPa respectively, and the minimum compressive strength of CIPR mix obtained was 0.7 MPa. Based on the evaluation of performance for the four RAP proportions, it was determined that 50% of RAP gave the best combination of the CIPR mixture.
Jatropha curcas is a multipurpose plant that has been suggested as a possible cure to
inflammation. It can be used as a source of animal feed, live fence, biodiesel and in traditional
medicine. Practitioners have used various extraction techniques to extract the active components
of the plant. This article compares the efficiency of three methods of drying technique for the
extraction of the total phenolic content from the plant. The freeze-drying method was the best
method compared to oven dry and air dry. The freeze-drying method dries J. curcas root sample
faster and preserve the total phenolic content better than the other methods.
In the modern era of next-generation genomics and Fourth Industrial Revolution, there is a growing demand for translational research that brings about not only impactful research but also potential commercialisation of R- and D-based products. Advancement of metabolic engineering and synthetic biology has put forward a viable and innovative biotechnological platform for bioproduct development especially using microbial chassis. In this chapter, readers will be introduced on the concepts of metabolic engineering, synthetic biology and microbial chassis and the applications of these biological engineering (BioE) components in the advancement of industrial and agricultural biotechnology. Main strategies in employing BioE platform are discussed especially for waste bioconversion and value-added product development. More importantly, this chapter will also discuss current endeavours in integrating systems and synthetic biology for microbial production of natural products by introducing flavonoid biosynthesis genes of Polygonum minus, a medicinally important tropical plant in engineered yeast.
Providing quality food and beverage services has become one of the critical issues in the tourism industry and several studies have been paying attention to it. On the other hand, there seems to be a paucity of data on service quality Jordanian hotels, making it difficult to fashion an appropriate management intervention. Also, there has been insufficient attempt to relate customers’ perceptions of service quality to their socio-demographic characteristics as well as the characteristics of organizations delivering the service. This study, therefore, analyzes customers' perceptions of service quality in the food and beverage service department in Jordanian hotels, an essential requirement for customers in Jordan.
With the world recovering from a public health disaster in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic and with political and social upheaval in the forms of wars such as in Ukraine and Sudan, localised fighting in various hotspots, the medical field faces huge challenges in addressing the needs of the various stakeholders. Still, these disasters represent opportunities to advance the new discoveries without compromising on the safety of the patients or general population. The COVID-19 vaccines were pushed through with great urgency driving on new discoveries of the genomic research, i.e. RNA based vaccines. This is complemented by the use of big data to monitor the disbursement of the vaccine to the general public. Unmistakably these new developments in tackling serious health disasters will lead to improvements on how the world tackle future crisis. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), genomics discoveries and cell biology are driving research and fueling hope for the future. Amid this scenario of great upheavals and significant advances in technologies or emerging technologies for the health sector, SIRIM Berhad is increasing its preparedness in terms of development of new facilities and new competencies as well as building the platform for the communication of conventional health or medical technologies with other technologies particularly digital technologies to unlock the potential of emerging technologies in both medical and digital to develop novel solutions to future problems or challenges.
Thermal structure and water quality in a large and shallow lake in Malaysia were studied between January 2012 and June 2013 in order to understand variations in relation to water level fluctuations and in-stream mining activities. Environmental variables, namely temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, chlorophyll-A and transparency, were measured using a multi-parameter probe and a Secchi disk. Measurements of environmental variables were performed at 0.1 m intervals from the surface to the bottom of the lake during the dry and wet seasons. High water level and strong solar radiation increased temperature stratification. River discharges during the wet season, and unsustainable sand mining activities led to an increased turbidity exceeding 100 NTU, and reduced transparency, which changed the temperature variation and subsequently altered the water quality pattern.
Awareness, involvement and training in dysphagia management are essential to ensure that patients are appropriately
assessed for dysphagia and provided with intervention. The study aimed to identify levels of awareness, involvement and
training of medical officers in dysphagia management. A total of 51 medical officers from the family medicine, medical,
otorhinolaryngology, surgery, and neurosurgery departments in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia participated in the
study. Levels of awareness, involvement and training of medical officers in dysphagia management were reported using
descriptive analysis. Results indicate that medical officers lacked awareness and training in dysphagia management.
Referral rates to speech-language pathologists for dysphagia management were low with 58.4% of medical officers having
had seldom or never referred patients. The results provide valuable information for addressing dysphagia management
in the hospital.
Optimization is central to any problem involving decision making. The area
of optimization has received enormous attention for over 30 years and it is still popular
in research field to this day. In this paper, a global optimization method called Improved
Homotopy with 2-Step Predictor-corrector Method will be introduced. The method in-
troduced is able to identify all local solutions by converting non-convex optimization
problems into piece-wise convex optimization problems. A mechanism which only consid-
ers the convex part where minimizers existed on a function is applied. This mechanism
allows the method to filter out concave parts and some unrelated parts automatically.
The identified convex parts are called trusted intervals. The descent property and the
global convergence of the method was shown in this paper. 15 test problems have been
used to show the ability of the algorithm proposed in locating global minimizer.
Concerning on navigational safety of a ship, comprehensive investigation of manoeuvrability of the ship is prominently required. The turning instability due to improper speed and magnitude of the rudder angle is vulnerable to serious accidents such as collision especially in the confined waters. This paper presents a computational fluid dynamic analyses on manoeuvrability performance of a tug in calm water. Here, the characteristics of the turning ability and zig-zag characteristics of the tug has been assessed due to effect of the various angles of twin-rudder and turning speeds. The results revealed that the increase of rudder’s angle resulted in subsequent reduction of her advance diameter from 144 m, 108 m, 96 m to 92 m. While for zig zag manoeuvre, the first overshoot angle is 0.6° and 1.08° for 10°/10° and 20°/20° rudder’s angle respectively. The first overshoot and second overshoot angle are within the IMO criteria which is below 20° and 25°. However, the increase of turning speed from 7 knots to 9 knots has been proportional with the increase of the turning diameter (advance diameter) from 70 m to 105.2 m. Basically, the turning performances of the tug manoeuvring with the turning speed of 7 to 9 knots incorporated with rudder’s angle 20°, 25°, 30° and 35° have been complied with IMO manoeuvring standards. This preliminary analysis contributes very valuable findings at early ship design stage to provide a safety of the navigational guidance for turning ability of the tug.
Introduction: The compatibility of denture cleanser is crucial in the prevention of failure of adhesion between silicone soft liner and acrylic denture base, thus ensuring the durability of the prosthesis. This scanning electron microscope (SEM) study was to determine the mode of failure and measured the gap formation between silicone soft liners and Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) denture base after immersion in denture cleansers. Methods: A total of 135 specimens of PMMA denture base lined with three different silicone soft liners (GC Reline Soft, Mollosil and Tokuyama Sofreliner Tough) were immersed into denture cleansers (Polident® and Stearadent) daily and stored in distilled water at 37±1°C. Specimens were examined and sectioned at 2.5mm and 5.0mm from the margin after 1 day, 30 days and 90 days before analyzed. Results: No significant difference detected in the mode of failure and gap formation after one-day immersion. Adhesive failure was the commonest failure at the margin after 30 days (71.11%) and after 90 days (95.56%). However, 33.33% of specimens showed mixed failure at 5.0mm sectioned after 90 days. A significant difference of gap formation was demonstrated from Mollosil in Steradent at the margin and at 2.5 mm sectioned after 30 days and after 90 days (p
This study aims to report a study on organization practices related to the process of existing evaluation and selection of e-Learning software. Initially, questionnaires were distributed to 250 experts who had been contacted via email or through walk-ins. However, only fifty experts which were categorized into decision makers, academicians/researchers and technical experts participated to fill the questionnaire. The results obtained from this study showed that the e-Learning software evaluation is a complex task as it requires many processes, evaluation criteria, and suitable evaluation techniques. The existing software evaluation criteria are insufficient to evaluate various e-Learning software products. This is due to the general characteristic of the criteria that can be used to evaluate any software. The outcome of this study provides organizations and e-Learning practitioners with information on existing practices when organization evaluates and select e-Learning software in their organizations. It can be used as a guideline for their e-Learning planning and implementation by organization Not least, it also gives the opportunity for the academicians/researchers to undertake a future study based on the existing e-Learning software evaluation and selection problems obtained.
