    OBJECTIVE: Pain management is one of the methods used in the health sector. Nursing care focuses on non-pharmacological measures, including the provision of aromatherapy using lavender and rose aromatherapy, which aims to understand the effectiveness of lavender and rose aromatherapy on pain intensity of postoperative patients in Laparatomi Hospital in Aisyiyah General Hospital in the surgical inpatient room, Padang in 2019.

    METHOD: The design of this study is a Quasi Experiment with pre-test and post-test designs with two groups. The sample of this study was Post Laparatomi in RSU with the technique of Accidental Sampling. The sample of this study consisted of 30 people for lavender and rose aromatherapy. Statistical tests used the Independent Test T-test.

    RESULT: Based on the results of the study it was found that lavender and rose aromatherapy can reduce pain scale in postoperative patients. But compared to the two intervention groups, the aroma group of lavender therapy is more effective with mean pain scale before lavender aromatherapy being 5.20 and pre-test is 3.40 with p-value 0.000.

    CONCLUSION: The nurses could provide nursing care in dealing with pain management in postoperative patients in addition to deep breathing techniques. It is recommended to apply aroma lavender therapy, which reduces pain and makes patients more relaxed.

    In the present research project, the first report on comparative analysis of the taxonomical, biological and pharmacological potential of healthy and geminivirus infected Hibiscus rosa sinensis (L.) leaves of the family Malvaceae was done by using different micro and macroscopic techniques. First of all, leaves were characterized for Cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMuV) and its associated betasatellite (Cotton leaf curl Multan Betasatellite; CLCuMB). Different morphological parameters like shape and size of stem, leaves, seeds and roots, presence and absence of ligule, distance between nodes and internodes and type of inflorescence etc. were analyzed. CLCuMuV infected H. rosa-sinensis revealed systematic symptoms of infection like chlorosis of leaves, stunted growth, decrease in size of roots, shoots and distortion etc. Anatomical investigation was performed under light ad scanning electron microscope. Different anatomical features like length and shape of guard cells, subsidiary cells, presence or absence of stomata, secretory ducts and trichomes were examined. In both plant samples anomocytic types of stomata and elongated, non-glandular and pointed tip trichomes were present, but the size (especially length and width) of trichomes and other cells like epidermal, subsidiary, and guard cells were highest in virus infected plants likened to healthy one. In the antibacterial activity, the maximum antibacterial potentail was seen in methanolic extract of K. pneumonea while antifungal activity was shown by methanolic extract of A. solani. Plants interact with different biological entities according to environmental conditions continuously and evolved. These types of interactions induce changes positively and negatively on plant metabolism and metabolites production. Many plant viruses also attacked various host plants consequently alter their secondary metabolism. To overcome such virus infected plants produces many important and different types of secondary plant metabolites as a defense response. Subsequent analysis of this n-hexane plant extract using Gas chromatography mass spectroscopy technique revealed that Hibiscus eluted contained 10 main compounds in Healthy sample and 13 compounds in infected one. Presence of essential secondary metabolites were also analyzed by FTIR analysis. The present study provides a comprehensive and novel review on taxonomy (morphology, anatomy) and antimicrobial potential of both healthy and geminivirus infected H. rosa-sinensis.

    This study explores the relationship between the total exports and total imports of the food industry in Sarawak from 1961 through 2007. We examined the sample period of the pre-1997 crisis (1961-1996) and the full sample period (1961-2007) to investigate disparities for pre-crisis sample. Analysis was carried out using standard econometric procedure and Dynamic OLS estimation for the annual observations of the two sample period. This study’s major findings are: (1) long run relationships were detected in the full sample period whereas they were absent in the pre-crisis period; (2) imbalances in food were found to be weakly sustainable for the full sample; (3) for every ringgit increase in imports, exports rose by RM0.803 for the full sample, revealing that imports grew at a rate faster than exports. This finding suggests that reducing the size of imports may improve imbalances in Sarawak’s food industry.

    A numerical study is conducted to determine the Vortex Induced Motion (VIM) effects on Deep-Draft Semi-Submersibles (DDSS). The VIM phenomena is a crucial problem that can cause severe impact on the fatigue life of mooring risers in DDSS. Therefore, a comprehensive numerical simulation is conducted using the Acusolve computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. Five models of immersed columns with different aspect ratios (ie. 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 and 1.4) are numerically investigated under two different incidence angles, which are 0° and 45°. The transverse and in-line vibration amplitude, amplitude of lift force coefficient and vortex shedding are analyzed. The numerical measurements are obtained to see the response of horizontal plane motions, which are transverse, in line and yaw motions. This study with detailed numerical results from parametric data will contribute future studies and the comparisons are made to demonstrate the capability of the present CFD approach.

    Globally, there has been an increase in the frequency of landslides which is the result of slope failures. The combination of high intensity rainfall and high temperature resulted in the formation of acidic soil which is detrimental to the healthy growth of plants. Proper plant coverage on slopes is a prerequisite to mitigate and rehabilitate the soil. However, not all plant species are able to grow in marginal land. Thus, this study was undertaken to find a suitable slope plant species. We aimed to evaluate the effect of different soil pH on root profiles and growth of three different potential slope plant species namely, Melastoma malabathricum, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and Syzygium campanulatum. M. malabathricum showed the highest tolerance to acidic soil as it recorded the highest plant height and photosynthetic rate. The root systems of M. malabathricum, H. rosa-sinensis and S. campanulatum were identified as M, VH- and R-types, respectively. The study proposed M. malabathricum which possessed dense and shallow roots to be planted at the toe or top of the slope while H. rosa-sinensis and S. campanulatum to be planted in the middle of a slope. S. campanulatum consistently recorded high root length and root length density across all three types of soil pH while M. malabathricum showed progressive increase in length as the soil pH increased. The root average diameter and root volume of M. malabathricum outperformed the other two plant species irrespective of soil pH. In terms of biomass, M. malabathricum exhibited the highest root and shoot dry weights followed by S. campanulatum. Thus, we propose M. malabathricum to be planted on slopes as a form of soil rehabilitation. The plant species displayed denser rooting, hence a stronger root anchorage that can hold the soil particles together which will be beneficial for slope stabilization.

    The compass rose pattern in financial data may indicate the presence of a nonlinear, possibly chaotic, data generating mechanism. The analysis of three key financial asset and denoised returns, gold, the Great British Pound/US dollar spot exchange rate, and the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index, reveals that over four equivalent subperiods, from 1996 to 2015, the compass rose pattern changes. This finding provides an opportunity to establish how noise affects financial time series. We conclude that the compass rose pattern is unlikely the product of an underlying nonlinear structure, since there is evidence of nonlinearity in all time periods, even those where the compass rose pattern is not evident. Therefore, the compass rose patterns, seen in the denoised data, suggest that the presence of noise masks the underlying dynamics of the asset returns.

    Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are toxic compounds derived from anthropogenic sources that stay in the environment for long periods. Ambient air has become the most important pathway for the transfer of PCDDs/PCDFs from emission sources to the environment. This review intends to summarise the information available on atmospheric PCDDs/PCDFs in the countries of Southeast Asia to provide a detailed description of the trends in PCDDs/PCDFs emissions, key sources, and levels in urban, rural, and industrial air as reported in peer-reviewed literature since 2000 and by the United Nations Environment Programme. As the largest country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is the major PCDDs/PCDFs emitter, accounting for 72.81% of the total release of PCDDs/PCDFs in the air from all available inventories in this region, while Brunei Darussalam is the lowest emitter, contributing to less than 0.02%. Open burning processes have become the largest source of ambient PCDDs/PCDFs in the region (69.62%), followed by waste incineration (10.69%), and ferrous and non-ferrous metal production (8.78%). PCDDs/PCDFs levels in rural areas ranged between 10 and 38 fg TEQ m-3; however, where open burning waste has occurred, the levels rose to 12-29 times higher. In urban areas, ambient levels were 15 times greater than in rural areas, varying from 23 to 565 fg TEQ m-3. Atmospheric concentrations near industrial palm oil and waste incinerator sites were between 64 and 1530 fg TEQ m-3. The non-cancer risk of ambient exposure to PCDDs/PCDFs through inhalation is low among populations near facilities emitting PCDDs/PCDFs. The lack of local technical capacity, the high economic costs, and the lack of established human resource capacities have been the major challenges in conducting ambient PCDDs/PCDFs studies in most countries in the region.

    Changes in physical properties (weight, size, colour and weight loss) and chemical properties (proximate analysis, TSS, pH, freezing point, total acidity and sugar content) of two water apple (Syzgium samaragense) cultivars, Semarang Rose and Kristal Taiwan were evaluated during ripening at 10°C and 50% RH. The results showed that the Kristal Taiwan cultivar was larger in size and weight but smaller in length compared to Semarang Rose. The Semarang Rose cultivar was sweeter than Kristal Taiwan. In this study, data obtained suggests that the water apple fruit can be stored at cold storage until 19 days.

    Background:
    Prevention of hypothermia in patients undergoing major posterior approach spinal surgery can be difficult, as a
    large body surface is exposed to the cold environment of the operating theatre. We compared the efficacy of a
    new under-body forced-air warming blanket with that of a resistive heating blanket in preventing hypothermia.
    Methods:
    Sixty patients undergoing major posterior approach spinal surgery lasting for more than 2 hours were randomly
    assigned to warming with a full under-body forced-air warming blanket or three segments of resistive heating
    blankets, both set at 42°C. The ambient temperature was kept near 20°C. Nasopharyngeal, rectal and axillary
    temperatures were measured at regular intervals. Changes in core temperature (average of nasopharyngeal
    and rectal) over time were compared by the independent t-test.
    Results:
    The characteristics of the patients were comparable. The baseline core temperature was 36.36 ±0.38°C in the
    forced-air group and 36.27 ± 0.46°C in the resistive heating group. During the first hour, the core temperature
    decreased similarly from baseline in both groups. From 100 minutes after induction until the end of the surgery,
    core temperature rose in both groups. At the end of surgery, the core temperature was increased by 0.08
    ± 0.09°C from baseline in the forced-air group but decreased by 0.40 ±0.04°C from baseline in the resistive
    heating group. The difference in the change of the core temperature, at the end of the surgery, between the

    Peripheral blood (PB) CD34+ cells enumeration is currently the most reliable method to guide the timing of stem cell harvest. However, its usage is restricted by being technically challenging, costly, and time-consuming. Immature reticulocyte fraction (IRF) determination, which is simpler and cheaper and has a faster turn-around time, has been proposed for a similar purpose. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the value of IRF in guiding stem cell harvest and examine the correlation between IRF and PB CD34+ cells count. Daily pre-harvest tests, i.e. PB CD34+ cells and IRF from 21 patients scheduled for autologous PBSC transplant were assessed. Stem cells harvests were commenced when the PB CD34+ cell count were more than 10 cell/ul. A total of 205 pre-harvest tests were analysed. Following stem cell mobilisations, both the IRF and PB CD 34+ cell counts rose with a variable pattern. In this study, we observed that the IRF peaks preceded the PB CD34+ count by 2 days. On the day of stem cell harvest, all the peak IRF values were >0.3. The PB CD34+ cell counts correlated with the harvested stem cell yield, whereby r2 = 0.77, p < 0.021. In autologous stem cell mobilisation, we believe that IRF is a useful screening tool to predict the rise of the PB CD34+ cell counts as it is a simple, fast and less costly. An IRF of > 0.3 may be used as a cut-off value for the initiation of PB CD34+ quantification prior to stem cell harvest.

    In previous papers it has been demonstrated that ground-dwelling rats are the principal reservoir of leptospirosis in Malaya. The present paper considers the distribution of infection by sex and weight in the ten principal rat species. There appears to be a general tendency for females to be infected more frequently than males, but significant differences were demonstrated only in R. sabanus (more than three times as many females as males infected) and R. whiteheadi. In Malaya, where seasonal changes are minimal, weights can be used as a good index of age in rats. In rat species with a low incidence of infection the incidence appeared to rise steadily with age. In species with a medium incidence the infection rate rose at first with age, fell in the 6-8-month age-group, and then rose again. In high-incidence species the rate rose rapidly from the second month.There appear to be three types of enzootic infection; (1) intensive transmission of a single serogroup in a crowded population of rats of a single species (transmission probably being through urinary contamination of damp soil); (2) low-intensity transmission of several serogroups among ground-rats frequenting wet places (probably with urinary transmission); and (3) low-intensity transmission of several serogroups among ground-rats in dry places (the transmission may be venereal).

    INTRODUCTION: Medical practice involves routinely making critical decisions regarding patient care and management. Many factors influence the decision-making process, and self-confidence has been found to be an important factor in effective decision-making. With the proper transfer of knowledge during their undergraduate studies, selfconfidence levels can be improved. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of High Fidelity Simulation as a component of medical education to improve the confidence levels of medical undergraduates during emergencies.

    METHODOLOGY: Study participants included a total of 60 final year medical undergraduates during their rotation in Medical Senior Posting. They participated in a simulation exercise using a high fidelity simulator, and their confidence level measured using a self-administered questionnaire.

    RESULTS: The results found that the confidence levels of 'Assessment of an Emergency Patient', 'Diagnosing Arrhythmias', 'Emergency Airway Management', 'Performing Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation', 'Using the Defibrillator' and 'Using Emergency Drugs' showed a statistically significant increase in confidence levels after the simulation exercise. The mean confidence levels also rose from 2.85 to 3.83 (p<0.05).

    CONCLUSION: We recommend further use of High Fidelity Simulation in medical education to improve the confidence levels of medical undergraduates.

    The present study aims to determine the limitations of traditional Jones criteria during the first episode of acute rheu- matic fever (ARF) at the initial referral hospital, in a cohort of patients below 18 years old who had undergone mitral valve repair in National Heart Institute (IJN) from 2011 to 2016. Carditis followed by fever and joint involvement were the most frequent manifestations at first diagnosis. Of the 50 patients, only seven (14%) fulfilled the traditional Jones criteria for the diagnosis of the first episode of ARF. When compulsory evidence of a previous group A Beta he- molytic streptococcus (GABHS) was disregarded, this figure rose to 54%. Therefore, strict adherence to Jones criteria with absolute documentation of GABHS will lead to underdiagnoses of ARF. The application of echocardiographic diagnostic criteria of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) needs to be emphasized to allow early diagnosis and adminis- tration of secondary prophylaxis to prevent progression to severe valvular disease.

    Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum L.) is among the tropical fruit grown in Malaysia and the demand for export rose in 2011. A fruit rot was observed between August and December 2011 from several areas in the states of Pulau Pinang and Perak, Malaysia. The symptoms initially appeared as light brown, water-soaked lesions that developed first in the pericarp and pulp, later enlarging and becoming dark brown. Greyish brown mycelia were observed on infected areas that turned yellowish at later stages of infection. Gliocephalotrichum bacillisporum was isolated from infected fruit by surface sterilization techniques. Conidia were mass-transferred onto potato dexstrose agar (PDA) plates and incubated at 27 ± 1°C. Tissue pieces (5 × 5 mm) excised from the margins between infected and healthy areas were then surface sterilized in 1% sodium hypochlorite for 3 to 5 min before being rinsed with distilled water, plated on PDA, and incubated at 27 ± 1°C for 7 days. Ten isolates of G. bacillisporum were obtained. Colonies on PDA were initially white before turning yellow with a feathery appearance. Microscopic characteristics on carnation leaf agar (CLA) consisted of hyaline conidia that were slightly ellipsoid to bacilliform with rounded apex ranging from 6.0 to 8.5 μm long and 2.0 to 2.5 μm wide. Conidiophores (70 to 130 μm long) were mostly single arising from large hypha approximately 13 to 16 μm. The conidiogenous structures were mostly quadriverticillate with dense, short, penicillate branches. The phialides were cylindrical and finger-like. Chlamydospores were present singly, in groups of 2 to 4, or in occasionally branched short chains and were brown in color with thick walls ranging from 11 to 13 μm. The cultural and morphological characteristics of G. bacillisporum isolates in the present study were very similar to previously published descriptions (1) except the conidiophores formed without sterile stipe extensions. All the G. bacillisporum isolates were deposited in culture collection at the Plant Pathology Lab, University Sains Malaysia, Penang. Molecular identification was accomplished from the ITS regions using ITS1 and ITS2 primers, and the β-tubulin gene using Bt2a and Bt2b primers (2). BLAST results from the ITS regions showed a 98 to 99% similarity with sequences of G. bacillisporum isolates reported in GenBank. Accession numbers of G. bacillisporum ITS regions: JX484850, JX484852, JX484853, JX484856, JX484858, JX484860, JX484862, JX484866, JX484867, and JX484868. The identity of G. bacillisporum isolates infecting rambutan was further confirmed by β-tubulin sequences (KC683909, KC683911, KC683912, KC683916, KC683919, KC683920, KC683923, KC683926, and KC683927), which showed 92 to 95% similarity with sequences of G. bacillisporum. Pathogenicity tests were also performed using mycelial plug (5 mm) and sprayed conidial suspensions (20 μl suspension of 106 conidia/ml) prepared from 7-day-old cultures. Inoculated fruits were incubated at 27 ± 1°C and after 10 days, similar rotting symptoms appeared on the fruit surface. The pathogen was reisolated from fruit rot lesions, thus fulfilling Koch's postulates, and tests were repeated twice.     Syzygium malaccense is native to Malaysia. It is sometimes called the malay apple, malay rose-apple, mountain rose-apple, mountain apple, water apple, or French cashew. The tree is very popular in many tropical and subtropical regions for its fruit and traditional medicine. The first complete chloroplast genome of Syzygium malaccense has been reported in this study. The complete chloroplast genome of Syzygium malaccense is 158,954 bp, composed of four regions: a large single-copy region with a size of 87,991 bp, a small single copy region with a size of 18,793 bp, and two inverted repeat regions with a size of 26,085 bp. The GC content is 36.97%. A total of 132 genes were annotated, including 84 encoding proteins, eight encoding rRNA genes, 37 encoding tRNA genes, and three encoding pseudo genes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Syzygium aromaticum, Syzygium cumini, and Syzygium forrestii are closely related to Syzygium malaccense.

    Hibiscus rosa sinensis, a member of the Malvaceae family, is widely cultivated in the tropics as an ornamental plant. It is often planted as a fence or hedge plant, and has several forms of flowers with varying colours. It is also used in traditional medicine to induce abortion, ease menstrual cramps, assist in childbirth and relieve headache, fever and inflammation. In this study, we evaluated the antibacterial activity of H. rosa sinesis extract using a disc diffusion method. Crude petroleum ether extract, ethyl acetate extract and methanol extract from the leaves, stems and flowers of the plant were prepared using a cold extraction technique. These extracts were tested at concentrations ranging from 4 mg/disc to 0.017 mg/disc against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumonia. The petroleum ether extract from the leaves, stems and flowers and methanol extract from the leaves showed inhibition zones with diameters > 12 mm against MRSA. Overall, the petroleum ether extract from flowers at concentrations of 4 mg/disc and 2 mg/disc displayed the strongest inhibition zones of 18.6 ± 2.85 mm and 18.5 ± 0.29 mm, respectively, as compared to vancomycin (30 μg/ml), which did not differ significantly from the 18.0 ± 0.10 mm size of the vancomycin (30 μg/ml) inhibition zone (p < 0.05). In conclusion, H. rosa sinensis extract is a potential antibacterial agent for treating MRSA infection.

    We aimed to establish a method for quantitative analysis of mixed haematopoietic chimerism based on microchip electrophoresis of selected molecular markers following PCR amplification for accurate monitoring of graft status post-transplantation. A 12-year-old girl with relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia who underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation had qualitative chimerism analysis using short tandem repeat markers at three time points following the procedure. Her archived DNA samples were then used to test the ability to correlate her clinical course with changes in the quantity of donor chimerism at the different time points. Quantitative chimerism analysis was performed on the Agilent 2100 bioanalyser and donor-recipient ratios were calculated from generated electropherograms. Complete donor chimerism (98%) was demonstrated three weeks post- transplantation. Decreasing amount of donor chimerism to 24% was shown after three months and this concurred with clinical relapse. Following a second transplant, full donor chimerism was reestablished where donor chimerism rose to 100%. High resolution microchip electrophoresis could be useful in predicting the occurrence of increasing recipient chimerism which may herald impending relapse in patients while the disease burden is still low. This investigational approach may provide useful information for clinicians to select appropriate intervention strategies to ensure successful transplantation.

    This study was conducted to study the blood pressure pattern and the prevalence of hypertension and its associated factors in a rural community in two coastal villages in rural Kedah, Mahysia. Out of the total population 504 were above 20 years of age and were eligible to participate. There were 227 males and 252 females. The mean systolic blood pressure was found to rise with age, peaking in the 6l·70 years age group, For women the mean blood pressure rose earlier from the age group of 4-l· 50 years. Mean blood pressures rose with increasing body mass index. lt also varied with occupation and education. The retired and unemployed had a higher blood pressure than those employed and there was an inverse relationship with increasing education. The prevalence of hypertension was 33.6%. More females were hypertensive (36.5%) as compared to males (3 0.4%) and this finding was the same for both systolic and diastolic hypertension. Majority (71.4%) of the hypertensives were undiagnosed. 72.5% of hypertensives who were on treatment were not under control. Hypertension was more prevalent among retirees and illiterates. Prevalence of hypertension increased correspondingly with age. Obesity was associated with hypertension. There was no association with family history of hypertension. Multiple logistic regression showed a positive association only for obesity. ln conclusion, given the high prevalence of hypertension at
    present, it appears that the prevalence will increase as each age cohort grows older. Obesity, especially among housewives is a significant assorted factor.

    Currently, the use of natural gums and mucilage is of increasing importance in pharmaceutical formulations as valuable drug excipient. Natural plant-based materials are economic, free of side effects, biocompatible and biodegradable. Therefore, Ketoprofen matrix tablets were formulated by employing Hibiscus rosa-sinensis leaves mucilage as natural polymer and HPMC (K100M) as a synthetic polymer to sustain the drug release from matrix system. Direct compression method was used to develop sustained released matrix tablets. The formulated matrix tablets were evaluated in terms of physical appearance, weight variation, thickness, diameter, hardness, friability and in vitro drug release. The difference between the natural and synthetic polymers was investigated concurrently. Matrix tablets developed from each formulation passed all standard physical evaluation tests. The dissolution studies of formulated tablets revealed sustained drug release up to 24 h compared to the reference drug Apo Keto® SR tablets. The dissolution data later were fitted into kinetic models such as zero order equation, first order equation, Higuchi equation, Hixson Crowell equation and Korsmeyer-Peppas equation to study the release of drugs from each formulation. The best formulations were selected based on the similarity factor (f2) value of 50% and more. Through the research, it is found that by increasing the polymers concentration, the rate of drug release decreased for both natural and synthetic polymers. The best formulation was found to be F3 which contained 40% Hibiscus rosa-sinensis mucilage polymer and showed comparable dissolution profile to the reference drug with f2 value of 78.03%. The release kinetics of this formulation has shown to follow non-Fickian type which involved both diffusion and erosion mechanism. Additionally, the statistical results indicated that there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) between the F3 and reference drug in terms of MDT and T50% with p-values of 1.00 and 0.995 respectively.

    Eight caaes of this condition are described, the patients being four Ceylonese, three Indians, and one Chinese, all males except one. Symptoms consisted of breathlessness and cough, sputum being sometimes purulent and occasionally blood-stained. Six of the patients complained of loss of weight, and in one, a Ceylonese schoolboy, this was the only presenting symptom. The authors found the most troublesome complaint to be a paroxysmal cough which was always worst at night. On clinical examination rhonchi were heard scattered throughout both lung fields in five cases, the lungs being clear in the other three. X-ray examination showed characteristic mottling of both lungs in four cases and of one lung in one case; another showed increased vascular markings, while in two the lungs were clear. Sputum was examined for tubercle bacilli and mites but none were found. The technique used for searching for mites is not described. A marked eosinophilia was found in all cases, the highest count recorded being 33, 264 eosinophils per cmm.Treatment consisted of arsenic, given in the form of neoarsphenamine, six injections of 0.3 gm. in six cases, and stovarsol 4 grains t.d.s. for seven and ten days respectively in the other two. Four of the patients were cured, three were improved, while one was showing a favourable response although treatment had not been completed.The author emphasizes the importance of performing repeated blood counts in order to avoid missing this condition. Out of the eight cases which he describes, one had been wrongly diagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis and three as bronchial asthma. One of the latter had an initial eosinophil count of 4, 092 which rose to 17, 700 three weeks later. H. T. H. Wilson
